Some generalizations based on stratification and vertical mixing in meromictic Lake Shira, Russia, in the period 2002-2009 / D. Y. Rogozin [et al.] // Aquatic Ecology. - 2010. - Vol. 44, Is. 3. - P485-496, DOI 10.1007/s10452-010-9328-6 . - ISSN 1386-2588

Аннотация: In a brackish, temperate, 24-m-deep Lake Shira, the profiles of salinity, temperature, oxygen and sulfide concentrations were measured on a seasonal basis from 2002 to 2009. The lake was shown to be meromictic with autumnal overturn restricted to mixolimnion. The depth of mixolimnion and position of oxic-anoxic interface varied annually. The spring mixing processes contribute to the formation of mixolimnion in autumn. The exceptionally windy spring of 2007 caused the deepening of mixolimnion in the winter of 2008. The winter position of oxic-anoxic interface was affected by the position of lower boundary of mixolimnion in all winters. The salinity in the winter mixolimnion increased compared with the autumn because of freezing out of salts from the upper water layers meters during ice formation and their dissolution in water below. The profiles of salinity and temperature were simulated by the mathematical 1-D model of temperature and salinity conditions taking into account ice formation. The simulated profiles generally coincided with the measured ones. The coincidence implies that simplified one-dimensional model can be applied to roughly describe salinity and density profiles and mixing behavior of Lake Shira. В© 2010 The Author(s).

Аннотация: The integrated study addressing biodegradation of microbial linear polyesters of hydroxyalkanoic acids (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs) in tropical conditions by microbial communities of Vietnamese soils was performed in locations close to Hanoi and Nha Trang, which differed in their weather conditions and microbial communities. It shows that PHA degradation in tropical soils is influenced by polymer chemical composition, specimen shape, and microbial characteristics. The homopolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid is degraded at higher rates than the copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric and 3-hydroxyvaleric acids. The average rates of mass loss were 0.04-0.33% per day for films and 0.02-0.18% for compact pellets. PHA degradation was accompanied by a decrease in the polymer molecular mass and, usually, an increase in the degree of crystallinity, suggesting preferential degradation of the amorphous phase. Under the study conditions, representatives of the bacterial genera Burkholderia, Bacillus, Cupriavidus, Mycobacterium, and Nocardiopsis and such micromycetes as Acremonium, Gongronella, Paecilomyces, and Penicillium, Trichoderma have been identified as major PHA degraders. Аннотация: During the summers of 1999-2001 the dynamics of polyhydroxyalkanoate degradation in a small recreational eutrophic reservoir was studied experimentally. It has been shown that biodegradation of polyhydroxyalkanoates in the environment is determined by the structure and physicochemical properties of the polymer and by local weather conditions, which influence the state of the aquatic ecosystem. Species (clones) of bacteria able to utilize polyhydroxyalkanoates in the reservoir were identified using molecular phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes. В© 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: The degradation dynamics of polyhydroxyalkanoates of different composition has been studied in an eutrophic storage reservoir for two seasons. It has been shown that the biodegradation of polymers under natural conditions depends not only on their structure and physicochemical properties but also, to a great extent, on a complex of weather-climatic conditions affecting the state of the reservoir ecosystem. The molecular genetic analysis of 16S rRNA has revealed bacterial species (clones) probably involved in the degradation of polyhydroxyalkanoates in a model storage reservoir. Аннотация: Shira Lake is a good representative object for detail weather-climate modeling due to its local hydroclimatic information and annually laminated bottom sediments. Carbonate biochemical mineralization in Shira Lake shows not only seasonal but also centennial pulses over each 450-500 years. An age-depth model has been built by layer counting combined with 137Cs and 14C isotopic dates. Thermodynamic estimation of the rock-water multisystem in conformity with local conditions and source matter provides grounds for interpretation of measured geochemical parameters in sediments including environmental indicators such as temperature, salinity, and pH. Scanning X-ray fluorescence for sub-millimeter microstratigraphic study of varves connects geochemical oscillations of microelement content (Rb, Ti, Ca, Sr, Br, XRD) with seasonality, as well as revealing centennial pulses of environmental change. Quantitative environmental reconstruction using multiple regression for precipitation calibrated by hydrometeorological time series year by year was carried out for the lake over the last 2500 years. Аннотация: Biodegradation of microbial linear polymers of hydroxyalkanoic acids (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs) by soil microbial communities of different structures has been studied during two field seasons in different weather conditions. This process was shown to be influenced by the polymer chemical composition, temperature, humidity, and the microbial soil component. The PHA degradation was accompanied by a decrease in the polymer molecular weight and an increase in the degree of crystallinity, indicating the preferential destruction of the amorphous phase compared to the crystalline one. The quantity of the true PHA destructors developing at the surface of the polymer samples was lower than the quantity of accompanying bacteria. The dominant PHA degrading microorganisms under the test conditions were identified as bacteria of the genera Variovorax, Stenotrophomonas, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Xanthomonas and as micromycetes from Penicillium, Paecilomyces, Acremonium, Verticillium, and Zygosporium.

meromictic lake -- weather -- thermal stratification -- seston -- nutrients -- stoichiometric ratios
Аннотация: Depths of thermocline and the redox zone, concentrations of dissolved and suspended carbon, and nitrogen and phosphorus in seston were measured in the pelagial of the saline meromictic Lake Shira (southern Siberia) in different years (2007-2011); the relationship of the values for those parameters with air-temperature variations was assessed. Positive correlations between both air temperatures in the previous year and the depth of the redox zone in winter and air temperature in April and the thermocline depth in summer were revealed. In the mixolimnion, the ratio of total nitrogen to total phosphorus almost always exceeded the Redfield ratio (16: 1); seston deficiency both in nitrogen and phosphorus was monitored in different seasons and at various depths. The amount of seston in the mixolimnion in summer almost doubled the amount of seston in winter and was directly related with the depth of the thermocline. In the monimolimnion, seston was rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. The amount of seston in the monimolimnion varied in different years and depended both on the air temperature in the previous year and the size of the zone.

    Dynamics of purple sulfur bacteria in a meromictic saline Lake Shunet (Khakassia, Siberia) in 2007–2013 / D. Y. Rogozin, V. V. Zykov, M. O. Tarnovskii // Microbiology. - 2016. - Vol. 85, Is. 1. - P93-101, DOI 10.1134/S0026261716010100 . - ISSN 0026-2617

long-term dynamics -- meromictic lake -- purple sulfur bacteria -- stratification
Аннотация: According to the results of seasonal monitoring, in 2007–2013 purple sulfur bacteria morphologically similar to Thiocapsa sp. Shira_1 (AJ633676 in EMBL/GenBank) predominated in the anoxygenic phototrophic community of the water column of the meromictic Lake Shira (Khakassia, Siberia). No pronounced seasonal periodicity in the total cell number in the water column was revealed during the period of observation. In some years cell number during the period when the lake was covered with ice was reliably higher than in summer. The absence of seasonal periodicity was probably due to the low amplitude of seasonal variations in temperature and illumination in the redox zone, resulting from its relatively deep location (12–16 m). The year-to-year dynamics was characterized by a reliable decrease of the total cell number in 2009–2010 and maxima in 2007 and 2011–2012. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that water temperature in the redox zone was the best predictor of the PSB abundance in Lake Shira. Water temperature, in turn, depended on the depth of mixing of the water column. Intense mixing in 2009–2011 was probably responsible for decreased PSB abundance in the lake. On the other hand, the absence of deep winter mixing, resulting in stable conditions in the chemocline, favored the preservation of relatively high PSB biomass. Prediction of circulation depth, which depends mainly on the weather conditions and dynamics of the water level, is required for prediction of PSB abundance in Lake Shira. These results may be useful for paleolimnological reconstructions of the history of the lake based on the remnants of purple sulfur bacteria in bottom sediments. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Boreal forests -- Climate -- Phenological models -- Satellite data
Аннотация: Here we show the new approach to analysis of seasonal phenological dynamics of wooded plants. Our model was premised on representation of phenological processes of trees in boreal domain by a process of energy production during the vegetation season and partial release of accumulated energy for survival during resting. We introduced the energy balance equation combining weather and phenological indicators and linking them throughout a year. The model was parameterized using data of phenological studies of birch, aspen, and Siberian larch in Stolby Nature Sanctuary (55°38? - 55°58? N, 92°38? - 93°05? E) during 1951-2012 which allow high accuracy simulation of phenological stages. Coefficients of the equation may be considered as indicators of sensitivity of wooded plants to climate. We show that remotely sensed data on phenological dates may be used in calculations using the model of energy balance. Daily MODIS/Terra images of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) of the studied deciduous forests were used. © 2017, Izdatel'stvo Nauka. All rights reserved.

food web -- meromictic lake -- numerical model -- sensitivity analysis -- stratification -- weather forcing
Аннотация: We used a Lake Shira numerical model to estimate the response of the ecosystem of a saline meromictic lake to variations in weather parameters during the growing season. The sensitivity analysis of the model suggests that compared to other external (nutrient inflows) and internal (spring biomasses of food-web components) factors, weather parameters are among the most influential for both mixolimnetic (phyto- and zooplankton) and monimolimnetic (purple sulfur bacteria, sulfur reducing bacteria and hydrogen sulfide) food-web components. Calculations with different weather scenarios shows how changes in the water temperature and mixing depth affect mixolimnetic and monimolimnetic food-web components and the depth of the oxic-anoxic interface in a meromictic lake. When weather forcing stimulates an increase in the biomass of food-web components in the mixolimnion, it produces cascading effects that lead to three results: 1) a higher content of detritus in the water column; 2) a higher content of hydrogen sulfide in the monimolimnion; 3) raising of the oxic-anoxic interface closer to the water-air surface. This cascading effect is complicated by the negative correlation between two light dependent primary producers located at different depths—phytoplankton in the mixolimnion and purple sulfur bacteria at the oxic-anoxic interface. Thus, weather conditions that stimulate higher phytoplankton biomass are associated with a higher detritus content and lower biomass of purple sulfur bacteria, a higher content of hydrogen sulfide and a shallower oxic-anoxic interface. The same weather conditions (higher wind, lower cloud cover, and lower air temperature) promote a scenario of less stable thermal stratification. Thus, our calculations suggest that weather parameters during the summer season strongly control the mixing depth, water temperature and the mixolimnetic food web. An effect of biogeochemical and physical interactions on the depth of the oxicanoxic interface is also detectable. However, intra- and interannual climate and weather effects will be more important for the control of meromixis stability. © 2018, Chinese Society for Oceanology and Limnology, Science Press and Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Аннотация: The variability of the state of forest vegetation was studied basing on the analysis of NDVI time series (2003–2016) of coniferous and deciduous stands and climate in Krasnoyarsk Territory (Stolby Nature Reserve). The initial data were 8-day Modis satellite information (MOD09Q1 product) and meteorological information from terrestrial weather stations. It was revealed that the trends of the averaged NDVI of forest vegetation for the period May – September and the maximum NDVI were negative. An analysis of the relationship between the dynamics of NDVI forest vegetation and the hydrothermal factor on the territory of the reserve in the 14-year cycle revealed an insignificant correlation between these variables. The negative NDVI trends of coniferous and deciduous stands indicate degradation processes. Deterioration of the state of forest vegetation in the study area detected by satellite data is explained by a combination of factors: climate change, anthropogenic impact of Krasnoyarsk and presence of old-aged forest. © 2018 Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Аннотация: Abstract: Frozen upper layers of the bottom sediment of Lake Shira are selected using special sampling equipment. Frozen samples and solid samples prepared from the upper layers of a sediment core are examined by means of X-ray fluorescence at the Local and Scanning X-Ray Fluorescence Elemental Analysis Station of the Siberian Synchrotron and Terahertz Radiation Center’s Shared Resource Center. Analytical data on the initial frozen and processed solid samples demonstrate the good repeatability of the results. Quantitative estimates of the sedimentation regimes are obtained, and geochemical indicators of the change in redox conditions are determined from the analysis data. Lithological and geochemical records are synchronized with regional seasonal and annual variations in weather and climate, and with the hydrological regime of the lake for the last 50 years. © 2019, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: Vegetation indices derived from remote sensing measurements are commonly used to describe and monitor vegetation. However, the same plant community can have a different NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) depending on weather conditions, and this complicates classification of plant communities. The present study develops methods of classifying the types of plant communities based on long-term NDVI data (MODIS/Aqua). The number of variables is reduced by introducing two integrated parameters of the NDVI seasonal series, facilitating classification of the meadow, steppe, and forest plant communities in Siberia using linear discriminant analysis. The quality of classification conducted by using the markers characterizing NDVI dynamics during 2003-2017 varies between 94% (forest and steppe) and 68% (meadow and forest). In addition to determining phenological markers, canonical correlations have been calculated between the time series of the proposed markers and the time series of monthly average air temperatures. Based on this, each pixel with a definite plant composition can be characterized by only four values of canonical correlation coefficients over the entire period analyzed. By using canonical correlations between NDVI and weather parameters and employing linear discriminant analysis, one can obtain a highly accurate classification of the study plant communities. © 2019 by the authors.

Mathematical models for determining the boundaries of forest areas unstable to the appearance of insects using satellite data (MODIS) / A. A. Kovalev, Yu. D. Ivanova, A. A. Sukhovolskiy [et al.] // IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering : Institute of Physics Publishing, 2020. - Vol. 734: 2nd International Scientific Conference on Advanced Technologies in Aerospace, Mechanical and Automation Engineering, MIST: Aerospace 2019 (18 November 2019 through 21 November 2019, ) Conference code: 157461, Is. 1. - Ст. 012091, DOI 10.1088/1757-899X/734/1/012091
Аннотация: The proposed approach allows us to evaluate the response of forest stands to local weather changes and resistance to insect attack without using data from weather stations, sometimes located far from experimental forest areas. All raw data were obtained during the season using remote sensing data (MODIS / AQUA). The ability to pre-determine decrease and loss of forest stands resistance to possible insect attacks can be extremely important for solving the tasks of forest-entomological monitoring and calculating the risk of forest insect's outbreaks. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Bottom sediments -- sedimentation traps -- salt lakes -- micro-XRF -- synchrotron radiation -- regression analysis
Аннотация: The relevance of the work is caused by the need to study seasonal variations in the volume and composition of sedimentation flows in modern lakes and their relationship with weather and climatic factors, which can serve as a basis for reconstructing climatic changes in the past. The main aim: to assess seasonal changes in the mass, velocity and chemical composition of sedimentary material entering Lake Shira on the basis of generalization and analysis of the results of multiyear annual monitoring of the material of sedimentation traps incubated in the lake. Object of the study was the drainless, slightly saline meromictic lake Shira, located in the steppe intermontane depression on the territory of the Republic of Khakassia. Methods: long-term seasonal monitoring of sedimentary material forming bottom sediments using sedimentation traps incubated in the lake; study of the obtained material for a wide range of parameters (biological, hydrochemical, lithological-geochemical, granulometric, etc.) by various conventional methods, including the method of X-ray fluorescence microanalysis on synchrotron radiation beams (XRF-SI), adapted for the study of bottom samples; computer statistical analysis of the data obtained (multiple regression method, cross-correlation analysis, etc.) in order to identify the relationship between regional temperatures and the chemical composition of the deposited material with the construction of a regression model. Results. Based on the study of the amount and elemental composition of the sedimentary material of the seasonal bottom traps of Lake Shira, collected for 2012-2017, a dynamic model of the seasonal influx of sedimentary flows in lakes of this landscape-geochemical type was formulated. It has been established that the most intensive sedimentation of the material occurs in the summer-autumn period, less - in the winter-spring period. At the same time, in spring, the accumulation of allochthonous (terrigenous) aleurite material, supplied with flood waters, predominates; in the summer-autumn period, simultaneously with the deposition of clastogenic pelitic material, biogenic and chemogenic materials are accumulated in sediments in large quantities. In winter, clastogenic and biogenic processes of sedimentation practically stop, only chemogenic sedimentation of carbonates is observed. It was established that the sedimentation of allochthonous material entering the reservoir occurs during two-three months, which indicates a certain inertness of sedimentation. The presence of a stable relationship between the mass and chemical composition of terrigenous material entering the lake with the regional temperature of the near-surface air, which is one of the main regulators of the water balance of the reservoir, is shown.
