Аннотация: Для проверки предположения, что по мере переработки тканей мертвой особи микроорганизмами-гетеротрофами интенсивность окрашивания трупов планктонных ракообразных анилиновым голубым уменьшается, провели 3 длительных эксперимента по определению скорости разложения трупов и изменению окраски по мере их разложения с убитыми нагреванием копеподитами циклопов (Cyclops vicinus, Mesocyclops leuckarti, эксперименты 1, 2), циклопами и дафниями разного размера и стадий (C. vicinus, Daphnia группы longispina, эксперимент 3). Кроме того, была проведена методическая работа по окрашиванию живых рачков, только что травмированных механически, для имитации возможных механических повреждений зоопланктеров при отборе проб и выявления характера их окрашивания. Эксперименты показали, что чем сильнее заселен труп микрогетеротрофами, тем менее интенсивно он окрашивается. В зависимости от температуры окружающей своды и морфологических особенностей кладоцер и копепод (открытые створки и относительно тонкая кутикула у дафний, более прочный и замкнутый панцирь у циклопов) "возраст" трупа рачка, когда он перестает окрашиваться из-за сильной переработки своих тканей микрогетеротрофами, определяется как 1-4 суток от момента гибели. Напротив, полностью и интенсивно окрашивается мертвая особь, уменьшая в интервале 1 час - 1-3 суток до отбора и окрашивания пробы. Механически травмированные живые особи окрашиваются не полностью: либо только по месту травмы, либо больше, но обычно не более 1/2 или 2/3 всего тела. Для повышения точности учета мертвых особей в пробах из водоема с использованием метода окраски анилиновым голубым даны соответствующие методические рекомендации. Аннотация: We studied non-consumptive (non-predatory) mortality of Daphnia and Cyclops vicinus during four sampling seasons. Mortality estimations were based on live/dead sorting using special staining and measurements of sedimentation rates for dead individuals, depended on wind speed. Original equations were used for calculations. The estimated specific non-consumptive mortality never had biologically senseless negative values, which were often obtained on the basis of the other ways of mortality estimations, and was in a good agreement with other components of population dynamics. As found, the non-consumptive mortality was the important, often the determinant component of the zooplankton population dynamics.

Аннотация: 1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the omega3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5omega3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3omega3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6omega3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.

Аннотация: The comparison of the dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and total amino acid composition was made for two water bodies: in one the phytoplankton were dominated by prokaryotes (i.e., there was a bloom of cyanobacteria) and by eukaryotic microalgae in the other. The dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and of total amino acid composition of water were investigated during the vegetation season. It was found that the only factor that significantly changed the percentages of amino acids in water was the bloom of cyanobacteria in the "blooming" water body. During the bloom of cyanobacteria, the absolute and relative content of the Leu-Glu group increased, while the contents of other acids generally dropped. Before and after the bloom, no significant variations in the total amino acid composition were recorded. In the reservoir where eukaryotic microalgae dominated, no significant variations in amino acid composition were recorded during the season.

Аннотация: The possibility of symbiotic, mutualistic (++) interrelations between epibiontic microalgae (Characidiopsis ellipsoidea, Colacium vesiculosum) and cyclopoids (Cyclops vicinus, Mesocyclops leukarti) in the Bugach recreational reservoir with a bloom of cyanobacteria is demonstrated. Overgrown cyclopoids, compared to those free from microalgae, have advantages in oxygen supply, which may be insufficient in the period of intensive algal bloom. Calculations have shown that oxygen requirements of cyclopoids may be fully satisfied due to C. vesiculosum photosynthetic activity in the dysphotic zone if the density of overgrowth exceeds 1000 algal cells per individual. There is no significant correlation between the natural mortality of crustaceans and the indices of their overgrowth by microalgae.

Аннотация: Two-section enclosures were designed for the investigation of the effect of various physicochemical and biological factors on vertical distribution of zooplankton in situ. The framework of the enclosure was a cylindrical polyethylene column without any partitions inside, in which the isolation of animals in different sections after in situ exposure was achieved by pinching the flexible central part of the column. Enclosures were tested at the brackish stratified meromictic Lake Shira (Russia, Khakasia). The absence of fish and carnivorous zooplankton in the lake suggests that the vertical distribution of zooplankton is mainly determined by physicochemical gradients in the water column. Experiments and field observations demonstrated that all age and size groups of Arctodiaptomus salinus and Brachionus plicatilis strongly avoided surface layers during the daylight. The escape of zooplankton from the anoxic hypolimnion was less active. Statistically significant avoidance was observed only for copepodites C4-C5 and females of A. salinus. The relatively simple construction of the columns and easy handling during the experiment were the factors that favoured the use of this device to perform in situ basic tests of the effect of different factors on the vertical distribution of zooplankton.

Аннотация: The volatility and thermal stability of chemicals that are contained in the metabolic products of Moina macrocopa females that stimulate the production of diapausing eggs in these females have been studied in experiments with separately cultivated individuals. It has been shown that the gametogenesis-stimulating chemicals in this species are nonvolatile compounds: the effect of the medium that contains the metabolic products of the organism was not decreased after many hours of blowing with argon. Prolonged heating up to 80 degrees C also did not deactivate the ability of these products to change the reproductive mode. The effect of the medium that contains these products decreased after boiling, but if the possibilities of their oxidation or binding with salts of metals were excluded, they retained the ability to change the reproductive mode of the animals even after boiling.

Аннотация: The efficiency of the transfer of carbon, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), nitrogen, and phosphorus from phytoplankton to zooplankton determines the functioning of the entire ecosystem. However, this parameter depends on environmental conditions. Fish as a very important factor regulating planktonic communities very likely affect the efficiency of the transfer of basic elements and substances from phytoplankton to zooplankton. In experimental mesocosms filled with water from a eutrophic lake and containing phyto- and zooplankton, we investigated how fish affect both primary and secondary production and the efficiency of transfer of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, PUFA, and fatty acids (FAs) from phytoplankton to zooplankton. Two treatments (control and fish treatment) were repeated in three replicates. The transfer efficiency of substances from phytoplankton to zooplankton was measured as the ratio of secondary production to primary production expressed per L and per unit of biomass. The efficiency expressed per L characterizes the productivity of the water body, while the efficiency expressed per unit of biomass indicates the effectiveness of aquatic species to transfer biologically valuable substances from one trophic level to another. We found that phytoplankton-zooplankton-fish interface is determined not only by predator-prey relationships, but are also affected by the quality of both phytoplankton and zooplankton in terms of contents of phosphorus, nitrogen, PUFA, and FAs in their biomass. We showed that, in the presence of fish, the transfer efficiency of carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and FAs per unit of biomass from phytoplankton to zooplankton was increased twofold, 12.4-fold, 2.5-fold, 12.4-fold, 7.4-fold, and tenfold, respectively, relative to the control. This facilitates sustainable functioning of the ecosystem under fish pressure. Such a mechanism prevents zooplankton over-exploitation by fish and enlarges the food chain.
