Аннотация: The process of biotic turnover in a closed ecological system (CES) with an external energy flow was analyzed by mathematical modeling of the biotic cycle formation. The formation of hierarchical structure in model CESs is governed by energy criteria. Energy flow through the ecosystem increases when a predator is introduced into a "producer-reducer" system at steady state. Analysis of the model shows that under certain conditions the presence of the primary predator with its high mineralization ability accelerates the biotic turnover measured by primary production. We, therefore, conclude that for every system it is possible to find a suitable predator able to provide the system with a higher biotic turnover rate and energy consumption. (C) 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: A mathematical model describing the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium at a higher CO2 level in the atmosphere was constructed. The positive effect of CO2-enrichment on the system plant - rhizospheric micro organisms was shown. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth at normal and high level of carbon dioxide was demonstrated. It was shown that the biomass of plant in the system is smaller than the biomass of plant growing without microorganisms. It was experimentally demonstrated that a simple ecosystem wheat - Pseudomonas putida - artificial soil develops and functions differently than its individual constituents in the case of a wheat-artificial soil system. With unlimited nutrition and a higher CO2 level (0.06%), plants with roots inoculated with micro organisms have a smaller biomass than plants that were not inoculated with micro organisms.

Аннотация: Novel approaches to description of ecosystem changes under the impact of contaminants, dependent on their local concentration and the impact duration, are considered. It is shown that, using quite simple assumptions about biotic effects of a contaminant, this process can be treated as an ecological analogue to phase transition of the second order. For the analysis and verification of the model proposed, the data on forest ecosystems in the vicinity of powerful point sources of contamination (copper-smelting plants) had been used.

Аннотация: Diverse, multidirectional changes in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry are detected in the coastal zone of a plain reservoir in the vicinity of a semiaquatic bird colony during vegetation season with extra high water level. Under these conditions, specific patterns of phyto- and zooplankton structure and quantitative characteristics, that, as was found out earlier, result from the vital activity of birds belonging to the family Ardeidae (namely, raising the share of mixotrophic phytoflagellates and copepods in plankton species composition) are leveled out. The main role in this process belongs to decomposition of immersed vegetation in the coastal zone, development of littoral macrophytes, and trophic relationships between algae and invertebrates. However, increase in atmospheric precipitation leads to increase in copepods abundance, which seems to be related to fast and intensive inflow of nitrogen-rich products of birds' vital activity. Due to this, during the whole period of observations, the following tendencies are revealed in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry in the vicinity of the bird colony: 1) concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their ratios turn out to be auspicious for predominance of diatoms and mixotrophic phytoflagellates, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DSA); 2) the abundance of phytoplankton, rich in polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (PEFA), favors propagation of those planktonic crustaceans which contain significantly more DSA and are more valuable food items for fish; 3) predominance of zooplankters, rich in PEFA, leads to higher concentration of PEFA in fry fish tissues, which, in certain periods, turns out to be advantageous for successful development and growth of dominant species of fish fry, such as roach, bream, white bream, and perch, by comparison with the test site.

Аннотация: The taxonomic structure, typology, species richness, and total abundance of bentic and littoral macroinvertebrate communities from small lakes of the Arctic and Subarctic zones are considered on the basis of original data from three northern Palearctic regions (the foot of the Putorana Plateau, Kolguev Island, and Western Svalbard Island). A comparative analysis of the communities of these regions has been carried out. The features of High Arctic insular, Low Arctic, subarctic, and boreal lake communities are discussed using a large volume of literature data. The complex pattern of changes in the total benthos biomass of small lakes has been revealed: it decreases in the subarctic taiga, increases in the hypoarctic tundra, and decreases again in the High Arctic.
