Аннотация: We report on the optical limiting (OL) in stable aqueous suspensions of detonation nanodiamond (ND) clusters with average size of 50, 110, and 320 nm. The nanosecond Z-scan measurements at wavelength of 532 nm revealed that the larger the cluster size, the better the OL performance and the higher the ray stability of the ND suspension. Our analysis showed that the nonlinear scattering and the nonlinear absorption are the dominant mechanisms of OL in aqueous ND suspensions. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We report on the polarization dependence of the optical limiting and nonlinear light scattering in nanodiamond clusters suspended in distilled water. The nanosecond Z-scan measurements at a wavelength of 532 nm reveal that the nonlinear transmittance of the suspension is independent of polarization, while the energy of the light pulses scattered at 90 deg shows a cosine-like dependence on the polarization azimuth of the incident beam. Moreover, the ratio of the energies of the vertically and horizontally polarized scattered pulses is a nonmonotonous function of the input fluence. The obtained results can be explained in terms of the change of scattering center size under the laser action and are in agreement with the predictions of the Rayleigh-Mie scattering theory. Higher luminous fungi -- Neonothopanus nambi -- ionizing irradiation -- reactive oxygen species -- lipid peroxidation
Аннотация: The luminescent system of higher luminous fungi is not fully understood and the enzyme/substrate pair of the light emission reaction has not been isolated. It was suggested that luminescence of fungi involves oxidase-type enzymes, and reactive oxygen species are important for fungal light production. Generation of reactive oxygen species can be stimulated by ionizing irradiation, which has not been studied for luminous fungi. We report the effect of X-irradiation on the luminescence of fungus Neonothopanus nambi. Experiments were performed withmyceliumon a home-built setup based on an X-ray tube and monochromator/photomultiplier tube. Application of X-rays does not change the emission spectrum, but after approximately 20 min of continuous irradiation, light production from unsupported mycelium starts growing and increases up to approximately five times. After peaking, its level decreases irrespective of the presence of X-irradiation. After staying at a certain level, light production collapses to zero, which is not related to the drying of the mycelium or thermal impact of radiation. The observed shape of kinetics is characteristic of a multistage and/or chain reaction. The time profile of light production must reflect the current levels of radicals present in the system and/or the activity of enzyme complexes involved in light production. Аннотация: Growth and potential photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton passed through intestine of crucian carp (Carassius auratus) from a small Siberian reservoir were compared with those of phytoplankton taken the directly from the reservoir. The dominant phytoplankton species in the reservoir, Microcystis aeruginosa, showed a significant increase of growth after the passage. Subdominant Planktothrix agardhii also showed an increase in growth rate, while subdominants Anabaena flos-aquae and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae were not stimulated by the gut passage.

Аннотация: Hepatocyte proliferation in the liver regenerating after partial hepatectomy ceases when the organ is restored, and the mechanism of this phenomenon is still unclear. In the experiments on fusing hepatocytes from the reoenerated mouse liver (15 days after partial hepatectomy) with NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblasts, we revealed no DNA synthesis in the nuclei of stimulated fibroblasts in heterokaryons (in the presence of hepatocyte nuclei), whereas DNA synthesis in nonfused cells was undisturbed. In this work, our purpose was to find out whether the suppression of DNA synthesis in heterokaryons could be due to the appearance in hepatocytes of some endogenous factors having an inhibitory effect on proliferation. To this end, hepatocytes from the mouse liver regenerated after partial hepatectomy were treated with cycloheximide for 1-4 h and were then fused with stimulated fibroblasts. Such a short-term treatment of hepatocytes with cycloheximide proved to result in the loss of their ability to inhibit DNA synthesis in the nuclei of stimulated or quiescent fibroblasts in heterokaryons, but hepatocytes proper actively proliferated in the medium with a low serum content (0.2%). When the mice with the liver reoenerated after partial hepatectomy were treated with a single sublethal dose of cycloheximide (3 mg/kg), their hepatocytes taken two days after this treatment had no inhibitory effect. Puromycin, another inhibitor of protein synthesis, had the same effect on hepatocytes. These results may be interpreted as evidence that the final stage of liver regeneration after damage is controlled by the factors having a C C negative effect on cell proliferation.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
Allium cepa -- onion seedlings -- gamma-radiation -- low dose -- dose dependency
Аннотация: Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term effects of gamma-radiation, including low-dose radiation, on growth parameters of onion (Allium cepa) seedling roots 6-10 days after irradiation. Materials and methods Onion seedlings were exposed to a Cs-137 gamma source at doses ranging from 0.1 to 10 grays (Gy). Responses of root and shoot length growth were studied 6 and 10 days after irradiation. Results Our results showed inhibition of the root and shoot length growth 6 days after exposure at all doses, including the low dose - 0.1 Gy. At a later point in time (day 10), root and shoot inhibition was only observed after irradiation at high doses (above 5 Gy), and that suggested the occurrence of cell repair after irradiation at low doses. The results indicated that the length of seedling roots was more sensitive to gamma-irradiation than the shoot length. Conclusion The results of the study suggested that short-term gamma-irradiation of onion seedlings (absorbed doses of 0.1-10 Gy) caused inhibition of plant growth 6 and 10 days after irradiation. The dose dependence of the onion root length was linear. The present study showed for the first time that short-term low-dose gamma-irradiation could induce long-term negative effects on plant growth.
