Аннотация: An integrated regenerative life support system (RLSS) for a lunar base consisting of physical/chemical systems for water and air revitalization, a vitamin green house and a storage system is reviewed. In selecting system design principles, reclamation methods and hardware, experience gained in developing, testing and flight operation of RLSS in Russia, is used. Initially lunar missions will use updated life support systems for ISSA modified with consideration for the lunar base performance. The feasibility of regenerative life support system application is shown. The basic principles of bioengineering RLSS design with a full-size green house incorporated are discussed.

Аннотация: An alternative strategy of space exploration accounting quality and quantity of obtained information, its cost, safety of crew and Earth, and permanent propaganda of space flights is proposed. This strategy is based on the combination of electrical ionic engines with well shielded long-term Closed Ecological Life Support System (CELSS), and with Robot- Manipulators (RM) operating in “transferred reality” regime. This construction named "Space Rover" (SR) would be highly reusable multipurpose tool for space exploration and mastering. SR will allow to perform “flexible” flights when there are no needs to meet strictly duration and trajectories of flight stages, when crew can stay near interesting space body more time if necessary, etc. The regime of “transferred reality” would be provided with RM having stereoscopic TV of high resolution, audio and tactile channels. Robot control would be performed without time delay by means systems similar to “virtual reality” ones. Moreover, all that robot would perceive would be recorded for further investigation and for propaganda of space exploration. Some optimal parameters of SR and optimal structure of hybrid CELSS for mission to Mars are calculated.* Specific design of SR and variants of trajectories reducing the dose of space radiation are considered.

Аннотация: In the present paper a description of the flow field in the base region of booster stages with clustered rocket engines is given. A flow model is derived from the bulk of available laboratory test an free flight measurements. Jet impingent theory is used for the determination of the convective heat transfer caused by the reverse flow. A comparison of the results of the present method with experimental data is followed by a discussion of its applicability and possible extension.

Аннотация: To create a life support system based on biological and physical-chemical processes is the optimum solution providing fall-valued condidtions for existence and efficient work of people at a lunar base. Long-standing experinece in experimental research or closed ecosystems and their components allows us to suggest a realistic functional structure of the lunar base and to estimate qualitatively its parameters. The original restrictions are as follows: 1) the basic source of energy to support the biological processes has to be the solar radiation; 2) the initial amount of basic biological elelments forming the turnover of substances (C, O, H, P, K, N) has to be delivered from Earth; 3). Moon materials are not to be used in the biological turnover inside the base; 4) the base is to supply the crew fully with atmosphere and water, and with 90% ( A scenario) or 40% (B scenario) of food. Experimental data about the plant productivity under the „Moon“ rhythm of light and darkness allow us to suggest that the A scenario requires per one human: plant area - 40 m2 irradiated during the lunar day by 250-300 W/m2 PAR producing 1250 g of dry biomass a terrestrial day; a heterotrophic component of „biological incineration" of inedible plant biomass (800 g/day) including the aquaculture of fish to produce animal products and contaminating the environment less than birds and mammals, and the culture of edible mushrooms; a component of physical-chemical correction for the LSS environment including the subsystems of: deep oxidation of organic impurities in the atmosphere and of water, organic wastes of human activity and that biological components (420 g/day) C02 concentration in „Moon“ nights, damping O2 in „Moon“ days, etc. The stock of presotred or delivered from Earth substances (food additions, seeds, etc.) to be involved in biological turnover is to be about 50 kg/year per man. Increase of the mass of prestored substances per man up to 220 kg/year would reduce twice the plant area and consumed amount of radiant energy to exclude the components of „biological incineration" and physical-chemical destruction of organic wastes.

Аннотация: Ecological expansion of man in space supposes the creation of considerably closed system of matter turnover within the spacecraft. The results of the experiment in the system - man - higher plants where atmosphere water and considerable part of food were regenerated are considered. The positive role of the supplement the biological processes of synthesis with physical and chemical processes of non-decomposing substances destruction is shown. The conclusion is made on the necessity of utilization of solar energy for realization photosynthesizing life-support systems in cosmos.

Аннотация: To support human life during space missions and orbital flight traditional air regeneration systems need more than 10 kg matter supply per one man per day [1k It Is possible to decrease this value only by means increasing of mass turnover closure degree. It could be achieved using both physical-chemical and biological life-support systems (FGLSS and BLSS respectively). At present time space life-support system (LS8) designers pay their attention to PCLSS since there is an opinion about low efficiency of BLSS. But direct utilization of solar light for photosynthesis significantly changes the situation. On the other hand the technology of BLSS based on hydrogen bacteria is similar to PCLSS and their weight and energetic features are quite comparable [1,23].

Аннотация: The possibility to increase the productivity of plants (wheat, radish) by increasing the PhAR intensity up to 600-650 W/m“2, i.e. corresponding to the solar light at the Earth's orbit. Description of experiments on growing plants (wheat, barley, beets, etc.) under the conditions of moon photoperiod is given and productivity and biochemical analysis of these plants are estimated. Data on the productivity of plants in the experimental closed system: man - higher plants are given. Compatibility of different kinds of plants with each other, with man and technical facilities of the system are disclosed in catalytic oxydizing of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere. Conclusion of the usefulness of the further development of photosynthesis-based life support systems for longterm inhabitation of man in space is made.

Аннотация: Closed ecological systems are of two-fold interest – as models of the Earth’s biosphere explorable in experiments and as a facility for long-term autonomous human life support beyond the Earth. Theoretical analysis and experimental implementation of highly closed manned systems has been the subject of studies at the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) for many years. BIOS systems of increasing complexity with complete regeneration of atmosphere, water and partially food have been realized. In BIOS-3 experiments the system inhabited by 2-3 researchers for 4-6 months maintained its metabolic equilibrium without any negative physiological effect on the crew, which proves its sustainable condition. Specific for BIOS-3 is internal control by the people inhabiting the system. So, BIOS-3 is the first experimental implementation of V.I. Vernadsky’s idea about the noosphere – habitable Biosphere controlled by human intelligence. Contrary to predictions of many environmentalists the closedness of the ecosystem is a factor that does not reduce, but increases its sustainability and makes its use for reliable life support outside the Earth realistic. The system is sustainable owing to permanent feedback between the monitoring of few key parameters of the system and automatic corrective actions on them. Main object of control is photo- biosynthesis regenerating parameters of human habitat disturbed by his vital activities. This principle has been realized in BIOS system and proved its reliability in long-term experiments. A new challenge is specified –optimal increase of trophic closedness of the system by reproduction within it essential proteins (peptides and amino acids), lipids, vitamins and other essential compounds. Alternative lines of attack on this problem by state-of-the-art biotechnological methods, GMO including, are under analysis. Reduced BIOS version – without complete closure – can be a breakthrough instrument to improve the quality of life of people living under extreme conditions on the Earth – in polar latitudes (Arctic, Antarctic), in deserts, in high mountains.

Аннотация: In the paper an attempt to combine in one three important criteria of LSS comparison: minimum mass, maximum safety, and maximum quality of life was made. Well known types of BLSS: with higher plant, higher plants and mushrooms, microalgae, and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria were considered. These BLSS were compared in terms of “integrated” mass for the case of vegetarian diet and “normal” one (with animal proteins and fats). It was shown that BLSS with higher plants and incineration of wastes becomes the best when exploitation period is more than 1 year. The dependence of higher plants LSS structure on operation time was found. BLSSs comparison in terms of integral reliability (this criterion includes mass and quality of life criteria) for lunar base scenario showed that BLSS with higher plants are advantageous in reliability and comfort. This comparison was made for achieved level of technology of closing and for perspective one.'

Аннотация: The experiment lasting half a year was with a crew of 3men. The recovery of 0. and water was accomplished through photosynthetic process. A part of wheat and vegetables was also produced in the system. All the processes were controlled by the crewmen. The result obtained established beyond question that a small closed ecosystem is quite feasible. The possibility of biological systems to support the Life through closed substance turnover is their great advantage which should be realized at the coming stage of manned space activity. Solution obtained with developed ecosystems will find applications in the Earth as an important problem today concerning the protection of the Earth's large ecosystem from contamination by waste products.

Аннотация: The vertical structure of the ecosystem in the euphotic zone of the western Equatorial Pacific has been studied. The studies were based on a continuous sounding of the bioluminescence field, with simultaneous, vertically aimed sampling made with the aid of a 5l water bottle and plankton nets. The bioluminescence field has a two-maxima structure with a more pronounced and permanent lower maximum found in the oligotrophic regions as deep as 60 to 100 m. In the narrow (10 m) layer of maximum bioluminescence, the concentration of zooplankton, as well as the concentration, activity and production of bacteria and phytoplankton, are several times higher than those in immediately adjacent waters at greater or lesser depth. At the same time, the concentration of nutrient salts in that layer diminishes sharply and approaches zero in the overlying water. Analysis of the data obtained shows that the production processes above the lower maximum layer are dependent not only on the turbulent influx of nutrient salts from the underlying layers, but also on the horizontal supply from the zone of upwelling. A pelagic community, in its different time aspects from the moment of water ascending until its sinking in the convergence zone, is suggested as a common system for modelling.
