Multilayer magnetic films -- Exchange interaction -- Exchange bias -- Ellipsometry -- SQUID magnetometry
Аннотация: The interlayer interactions in multilayer systems with a non-magnetic semimetallic interlayer are great of interest. The magnetic and structural properties of the DyxCo1-x/Bi/Py systems (17 ˂ x ˂ 26 at.%) have been studied. The temperature dependences of magnetization in the range 4.2–300 K were measured for the first time. The influence of the bismuth interlayer thickness on the exchange interaction between the DyCo and Py layers was found as well as the critical value of its thickness. The obtained atypical value of the period of exchange bias oscillations was explained by the formation of bismuth compounds with dysprosium–pnictogenides at bismuth thicknesses below the critical value. The interface was investigated by spectral ellipsometry in the range 2–5 eV. The information on the structure of the surface obtained by atomic force microscopy was used to create a multilayer model for fitting experimental ellipsometric data. Analysis of the optical properties showed that pnictogenide Dy3Bi2 is formed at the interface, which affects the general magnetic state of the samples studied.

Nanowires -- Magnetic measurements -- Micromagnetic modeling
Аннотация: Arrays of iron nanowires (NWs) obtained by template-assisted electrodeposition constitute a promising composite material characterized by a combination of high magnetization in the filler and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The properties of these composites arise from the interplay between the behavior of individual NWs and their magnetostatic interactions. In this study, we investigated NW arrays with identical wire diameters but varying spatial arrangements. Major hysteresis loops were studied under various field directions relative to the NW axis. Key parameters such as the slope of the magnetization curve, saturation magnetization, and coercive force were quantified. Additionally, FORC (First Order Reversal Curve) measurements were conducted with the field oriented longitudinally with respect to the NW, offering insights into the inhomogeneity of the demagnetizing field influenced by the NW array's configuration. In the sample with the highest NW density, we observed isotropic behavior of the effective demagnetizing field, and we proposed an explanation for this phenomenon using the effective media approach. Micromagnetic simulations revealed that the magnetic behavior of individual NWs with a 100 nm diameter can be described as an interchange between volumes characterized by vortex and uniform magnetization patterns. Calculations of the demagnetizing field using the effective medium model demonstrated excellent agreement with experimental data across arrays featuring different NW densities. Remarkably, the quantitative consistency of coercive field values obtained from micromagnetic simulations and experimental measurements in the range of angles from 0° to 45° for the studied samples underscores the structural homogeneity of the obtained NWs.

BSCCO -- Polycrystalline high-temperature superconductor -- Magnetic hysteresis -- Critical state model -- Magnetic flux compression
Аннотация: Bi‒Sr‒Ca‒Cu‒O polycrystalline high-temperature superconductors with the 2–2-2–3 structure have been comprehensively studied, their properties have been described, and features of the small magnetic hysteresis in the investigated materials have been established. The small magnetic hysteresis is shown to be caused by the penetration of a magnetic flux into a superconductor and its capture in the region of boundaries between HTS crystallites and by Meissner currents flowing through these boundaries. It has been found that, at a certain magnetic prehistory, the small hysteresis collapses, i.e. its footprints disappear. This has been attributed to the interaction between two superconducting subsystems in the investigated polycrystalline HTS, specifically, the effect of the magnetic moments of HTS crystallites on the effective field in the regions of intercrystalline boundaries. The shape of the small magnetic hysteresis loop has been described within the critical state model.

Аннотация: We explored the role of biomineralization in industrial waste sludge formation, using the laboratory cultivation of Desulfovibrio sp. OL sulfate reducing species isolated from the Komsomolsky waste sludge (Russia). The most frequently reported sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) biomineralization products are various iron sulfides. Here we present first studies of the products of Desulfosporosinus metallidurans, acidophilic SRB from acid mine drainage. We analyzed the biomineralized sample using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, X-ray absorption and Mossbauer spectroscopies, and magnetization measurements via First-Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagram analysis. Our findings show that the biomineralization occurring under pure culture conditions leads to the formation of greigite (Fe3S4) nanorods, along with larger microbially mediated crystals of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O) and siderite (FeCO3). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the crystal sizes of vivianite and siderite were comparatively larger than those of the nanorod-shaped greigite. Transmission electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy detected ultrafine ferrihydrite (Fe2O3·nH2O) superparamagnetic nanoparticles with an average size of 2.5 nm. FORC analysis showed significant magnetic interactions among these nanoparticles, suggesting their potential for magnetic separation applications. The current study demonstrates that ferrihydrite nanoparticles have a strong magnetic affinity for other crystal phases produced by Desulfosporosinus metallidurans. Therefore, we believe that the investigated bacterial species can be exploited in advanced magnetic separation techniques. This offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for purifying sediments in industrial waste sludge.

Magnetic properties -- Compensation temperature -- Mossbauer spectroscopy
Аннотация: The magnetic properties and Mossbauer spectra of the Y1.8Bi1.2Fe3.5Ga1.5O12 compound were investigated. A linear temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization, hysteresis, and stability of the coercive field in the magnetically ordered state were found. Using the Mossbauer measurements, the distribution of iron ions over octahedral and tetrahedral sites and the concentration of paramagnetic iron ions were determined. Two critical temperatures – the sublattice magnetization compensation temperature and the ferrimagnet–paramagnet transition temperature – were established. The disappear of the phonon mode in the vicinity of the magnetic transition was observed. The experimental data have been interpreted in terms of the spin–lattice interaction model.

ferromagnetic -- vanadium oxide -- interface anisotropy
Аннотация: In this paper, we explore the suggestions of the results of experimental studies on low-dimensional layered systems in FeNi/V2O3/FeNi film structures. The multifunctional material V2O3 is used as an interlayer between the magnetically active FeNi layers. The films were obtained by ultrahigh vacuum magnetron sputtering on a glass substrate with a base size of 10−10 Torr. It has been found that for V2O3 films, the decrease in the metal–semiconductor transition temperature increases significantly. Magnetic characteristics were studied on the MPMS-XL SQUID magnetometer. The exchange effect occurs both in the region where the oxide has a magnetic order and in the paramagnetic region. The latter is due to the effect of the magnetic panel in the oxide package. The phenomenon of oscillation of the exchange field occurs depending on the phenomenon of intermediate observation observed experimentally.

sintering -- dispersed microspheres -- fly ash -- glass-ceramics -- soft magnetic materials -- characterization -- Mossbauer spectroscopy -- magnetic measurements
Аннотация: The recycling of hazardous industrial waste into high-tech materials with desired properties is of considerable interest since it provides optimal alternatives for its final disposal. Coal fly ash, the major waste generated by coal-fired power plants, contains significant quantities of dispersed microspheres with a diameter smaller than 10 μm, which are anthropogenic atmospheric pollutants PM10. Due to their composition and fine-grained powder morphology, they can be converted into sintered products. In this study, dispersed microspheres from class C fly ash were directly sintered without any additive to form high-strength glass-ceramics with magnetic properties. The optimum processing conditions were achieved at a temperature of 1200 °C, at which samples with a compressive strength of 100.6 MPa were obtained. Sintering reduces the quantity of the glass phase and promotes the formation of larnite, Fe-spinel, ye’elimite, and ternesite. Mössbauer measurements show that the relative concentration of the magnetic phase compared to the paramagnetic one rises almost in order. The sintered sample demonstrates a narrower distribution of the hyperfine magnetic field and a significantly lower value of the coercive field of 25 Oe, which allows proposing such materials as soft magnetic materials. The presented results demonstrate promising industrial applications of hazardous PM10 to minimize solid waste pollution.

Neutron diffraction -- Crystal structure -- Multiferroics -- Magnetic structure -- Manganites
Аннотация: Structural and magnetic properties of single crystals of DyMnO3 were investigated by neutron diffraction in order to study the peculiarities of 3d-4f interactions in this compound. Precise magnetic order and its detailed temperature evolution were determined using single crystal neutron diffraction. Elliptical cycloid on manganese subsystem below TCh = 19 K was confirmed, with temperature decrease the elipticity of the Mn magnetic structure reduces significantly, creating almost circular cycloid. Temperature evolution of the magnetic structure demonstrate specific hysteretic behavior. The results show a complex interplay between transition metal and rare earth magnetic sublattices leading to so-called “Mn- controlled” and “Dy- controlled” magnetic states. The strong and complicate 3d-4f interaction leads to the unusual very slow magnetic structure relaxation.

Neutron diffraction -- Crystal structure -- Multiferroics -- Magnetic structure -- Manganites
Аннотация: Effect of substitution Dy by Ho on the magneto-electric behavior of the compound Dy0.8Ho0.2MnO3 was investigated by the different methods of polarized and classical neutron diffraction and macroscopic methods. It is shown that substitution by Ho of 20% on the position of Dy do not change overall crystal symmetry of compound. It remains of Pbnm type down to the very low temperatures. Magnetic ordering, its temperature and field evolution was determined by the use of single crystal neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. Chiral type of magnetic structure on Mn subsystem is confirmed below Tc ≈ 16 K. Using polarized neutron diffraction the 3-component character of rare earth magnetic ordering in Dy0.8Ho0.2MnO3 in contrast to DyMnO3 could be revealed. It was shown that doping by 20% Ho suppresses the spontaneous rare-earth ordering with its own propagation vector and provides the situation when two magnetic subsystems, manganese and rare earth ones have a coherent incommensurate spatial propagation. The influence of the external electric field on the magnetic chirality could be directly evidenced, proving strong magneto-electric coupling in multiferroic phase. The study of the electric polarization under similar temperatures and fields on the same samples provides the direct correlation between the results of the microscopic and macroscopic investigations.

Granular HTS -- Effective field in the intergrain medium -- Magnetoresistance hysteresis -- Magnetization hysteresis -- Trapped flux -- Meissner current -- Abrikosov vortex
Аннотация: Granular high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) are characterized by the hysteretic field dependences of magnetoresistance R(H) and critical current IC(H). These hysteretic effects are described within the concept of an effective field in the intergrain medium. The effective field is a superposition of external magnetic field H and the field induced by the magnetic moments of superconducting grains into intergrain spacings (grain boundaries). The magnetization of superconducting grains is determined by two contributions: Meissner (shielding) currents (MC) and trapped magnetic fluxes (Abrikosov vortices (AV)). To develop the concept of an effective field in the intergrain medium, the magnetotransport properties (R and IC) have been compared for two cases: (AV) the magnetization of superconducting grains is only determined by the trapped magnetic flux (zero external field) and (MC) HTS grains are in the Meissner state (the external field is weaker than the first critical field of grains). In a set of experiments, the main features of the hysteretic R(H) and M(H) dependences have been illustrated and the external conditions for implementing the AV and MC states have been established. It has been found that the effects of the Abrikosov vortices and intragrain Meissner currents on an effective field in the intergrain medium at the same magnetization values are noticeably different. This is a nontrivial fact that requires a thorough study of the impact of the anisotropy of the superconducting properties of grains on the configuration of the Meissner currents in them, as well as on the orientation of vortices both inside grains and near their surface. We suggest the explanation of observed stronger effect of the Meissner currents on the intergrain medium as compared with the effect of the Abrikosov vortices.

Biomineralization -- Superparamagnetic nanoparticles -- Interparticle interactions -- Iron sulfide -- Ferrihydrite
Аннотация: A composite based on nanorod-shaped greigite (Fe3S4) crystallites with adsorbed ferrihydrite (Fe2O3 ‧ nH2O) nanoparticles has been synthesized. The synthesis has been performed by biomineralization of the bacterial wall of a sulfate-reducing Desulfovibrio sp. A2 bacteria. The phase composition of the synthesized composite has been investigated by X-ray powder and electron diffraction, as well as Fourier-transform infrared, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The magnetic measurement data have shown that the sample under study contains two magnetic phases: multidomain nanorod-shaped greigite and ultrasmall ferrihydrite nanoparticles. The constant atomic fraction of the greigite crystalline phase in the range of 4–300 K (~20%) revealed by Mössbauer spectroscopy is indicative of a blocked magnetic moment of nanorod-shaped Fe3S4. It is shown that nanorod-shaped Fe3S4 crystallites are strongly magnetically bound with adsorbed Fe2O3 ‧ nH2O (Eint ~ 1200kB) nanoparticles. This significantly slows down the superparamagnetic relaxation of the magnetic moments of ferrihydrite nanoparticles. Therefore, the blocking temperature noticeably increases and attains, according to the Mössbauer spectroscopy data, a value of TB = 140 K (the magnetic measurements yield TB = 72 K). The processes of superparamagnetic blocking of the magnetic moments of ferrihydrite nanoparticles manifest themselves in the evolution of the magnetic properties of the investigated sample (a significant increase in the coercivity and remanent magnetization). In support of the Mössbauer spectroscopy data, a sufficiently high superparamagnetic blocking temperature has been established, which discloses the effect of magnetizing of ferrihydrite nanoparticles by coarser greigite formations, analogously to the effect of interparticle magnetic interactions.

Peak effect -- Bulk superconductors -- Critical current -- Pinning -- X-ray diffraction -- YBCO -- Doping -- Paramagnetic magnetization
Аннотация: We present the results of a study of the superconducting and paramagnetic properties of polycrystalline Y1–xGdxBa2Cu3O7–δ samples. The critical current density and critical temperature of YBCO were weakly decreased by the Gd doping. A peak effect, which is a nonmonotonic dependence of the critical current density on magnetic field, was detected for all samples. The peak position shifted to higher magnetic fields with increasing Gd content. This behavior is opposite to the shift of the peak effect observed for other YBCO compounds doped by magnetic ions. This unusual behavior is apparently related to the realized granular structure instead of the type of doping ion. A correlation between the peak position and the granule size was found in the investigated samples and other polycrystalline YBCO compounds.

nanomagnetics -- rods with gradients of composition -- electroless deposition -- coercivity -- magnetic anisotropy
Аннотация: A comparative study of the magnetic properties of arrays of Co–Ni rods with different composition gradients (smooth or step-like) along the rod axes was carried out. Ordered arrays of Co–Ni nanorods with diameters up to 400 nm and 8 µm length were prepared by electroless plating into a porous nuclear-track-etched polycarbonate membrane. The gradient in Co and Ni composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The variation of Co–Ni contents along the long axis of the rods correlates with the gradient of the magnetization within the rod. Magnetization reversal was studied by analyzing the angular dependence of coercivity and using micromagnetic simulations. For both types of gradient rods, reversal occurs by curling. The local magnetic anisotropy field of rods with a step-type gradient is significantly higher than that for rods with a smooth gradient.

Аннотация: Neutron diffraction studies of HoFeO3 single crystals were performed under external magnetic fields. The interplay between the external magnetic fields, Dzyaloshinsky-Moria antisymmetric exchange, isotropic exchange interactions between Fe and Ho sublattices and within the Fe sublattice provides a rich magnetic phase diagram. As the result of the balance of exchange interactions inside the crystal and external magnetic fields, we found 8 different magnetic phases, induced or suppressed dependent on the external field.

granular HTSC -- magnetoresistance hysteresis -- magnetization hysteresis -- trapped flux -- screening currents
Аннотация: The concept of an effective field in an intergranular medium is used to describe the hysteresis magnetoresistance of granular HTSCs. This effective field is a superposition of the external magnetic field and the field induced by the magnetic moments of the superconducting granules. The magnetic moment of the granules is contributed by the shielding currents and the trapped magnetic flux. We studied and analyzed the effect of the trapped flux on the magnetoresistance. It has been experimentally shown that the dependence of the residual resistance RRem (after applying of the external field) on the trapped flux clearly correlates with the behavior of the remanent magnetization. In addition, special attention was paid to a detailed comparison of the magnetoresistance of the granular YBa2Cu3O7-δ for two cases: (a) the magnetization of HTSC-granules is caused only by the trapped magnetic flux (in a zero external field) and (b) HTSC-granules are in the Meissner state (the external field is smaller than the first critical field of the granules). It has been found that Abrikosov vortices and intragranular Meissner currents differently affect the effective field in the intergranular medium (for the same values (of magnetization for cases (a) and (b) ). A possible reason for this difference is discussed.
