Аннотация: X-ray diffraction, heat capacity and magnetic measurements are performed on single crystals of Mn2-xMgxBO4 (x = 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7) with the warwickite structure. The monoclinic symmetry is found for all samples with the space group P21/n. The M1 site is occupied by trivalent Mn ions while the M2 site is occupied by a mixture of divalent Mg and Mn ions. Regular cation and charge distributions are observed, which is unusual for heterometallic warwickites. The local octahedral distortions of M1O6 show the monotonic dependence on the Mg content and are in accordance with the Jahn-Teller distortion. All samples are found to undergo long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with rather low transition temperatures of TN = 16, 14 and 13 K for x = 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7, respectively. The ordering of local octahedral distortions, caused by the strong electron-phonon interaction of the trivalent Mn ions, is proposed to stabilise the cationic ordering and, as a result, the long-range magnetic ordering in the material.

Аннотация: Crystals of ludwigite Ni2.14Mn0.86BO5 were synthesized by flux growth technique. We show in the paper that it contains Mn3+ and Mn4+. A possible mechanism of the manganese valence states stabilization has been proposed. The structural and magnetic characterization of the synthesized samples has been carried out in detail. The cations composition and Mn valence states of the crystal were determined using X-ray diffraction and EXAFS technique. The comparative analysis was carried out between the studied crystal and Ni2MnBO5 synthesized previously. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out. The magnetic transition in the studied composition occurs at the 100 K that is higher than in Ni2MnBO5 although the studied composition is more disordered. The calculations of the exchange integrals in the frameworks of indirect coupling model revealed strong antiferromagnetic interactions. The several magnetic subsystems existence hypothesis was supposed. The possible magnetic structure was suggested from the energies estimation for different ordering variants.

Аннотация: The effects related to the conversion of magnetic structures of a Cu2MnBO5 ferrimagnet to a Cu2GaBO5 antiferromagnet under the Mn3+ → Ga3+ substitution were studied. The properties of four single crystal samples with the gallium concentration x  = 0.04, 0.11, 0.17, 0.25 were examined. The chemical composition and valence state of the samples were determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy element-sensitive technique. Distribution of the 3d metal ions over crystallographic positions was studied using the first principle calculations by Wien2k program. The evolution of the magnetic properties was investigated by the measurements of the temperature and field dependences of magnetization, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility. In agreement with the previous study of the structure evolution of Cu2Mn1-xGaxBO5 solid solutions, the critical concentration upon a change in the magnetic ordering type was found in the range x  = 0.17–0.25. The non-monotonic behavior of magnetization in terms of the gallium content was found in the concentration range of 0.04–0.17. A complex pattern of magnetic phase transitions belonging to the concentration phase boundary was obtained in the compounds with gallium being within the range x  = 0.17–0.25. One could observe the splitting of the peaks of the real part of ac-susceptibility of the high-temperature phase transition in the Cu2MnBO5-like phase (x = 0.04, 0.11) and that of the low-temperature one at the concentration boundary (x = 0.17, 0.25) with different frequency and orientational dependence. The type and origin of the multiple phase transitions observed in the studied samples were analyzed.

Аннотация: A series of single crystals of Ni3-xCoxB2O6 compounds with the kotoite structure and with different concentrations of transition metal ions (x = 0; 0,19; 0,6; 0,93; 2) were obtained. The lattice parameters and atomic coordinates were determined using X-ray diffraction. The theoretical calculations using the WIEN2k package predict that nickel ions tend to occupy the 4f crystallographic position, while cobalt ions tend to occupy the 2a crystallographic positions. The study of the diffuse scattering spectra and comparison of the Racah parameters for the compounds Ni3B2O6 and Co2NiB2O6 provides experimental evidence that the nickel ions occupy crystallographic position 4f.

Аннотация: Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.75) single crystals were synthesized using the flux method. The crystal nucleation procedure and flux parameters are reported. Conditions for growing the Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.75) single crystals are described. The prepared crystals were studied by Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range of T = 10-300 K. The spectral region corresponding to temperatures of T = 10-55 K, which involves the temperatures of the magnetic phase transition TN = 32 K for x = 0 and TN = 31 K for x = 0.75, was thoroughly analyzed. Anomalies related to the magnetic ordering established in both compounds were found. The main changes occur in the low-wavenumber region (up to 100 cm-1), where the mode corresponding to magnon scattering arises. This mode is shown to have the internal structure indicative of the occurrence of unstable vibrations (40-80 cm-1). The results obtained are analyzed by calculating the empirical lattice dynamics in Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 with x = 0 and x = 1. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

A theoretical group analysis is performed and different models of the magnetic structure of Ni5Sn(BO5)2 are discussed.

Аннотация: Single crystals of ludwigite Cu2MnBO5 were synthesized by flux growth technique. The detailed structural and magnetic characterizations of the synthesized samples have been carried out. Аннотация: The magnetic structures of Fe3BO5 and Co3BO5 ludwigites have been studied experimentally by magnetic measurements and theoretically by the combination of the group theoretical analysis and semi empiric calculations of the superexchange interactions. The different collinear spin configurations in the triads 3-1-3 and 4-2-4 including ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and dimer have been considered. For Fe3BO5 the antiferromagnetic state with zero magnetic moment per unit cell, showing the lowest energy, results to be the most probable magnetic ground state. The unusual magnetic structure comprising two virtually independent orthogonal subsystems is formed to avoid heavy frustrations of superexchange interactions between the 3-1-3 and 4-2-4 spin ladders. In Co3BO5 the magnetic frustrations present for the Co3+ high-spin state are quenched for a Co3+ low spin state resulting in the ferrimagnetic long-range order. The obtained results are discussed in comparison with experimental magnetic data.

Аннотация: Single crystals of Fe-substituted Cu2Mn1-xFexBO5 ludwigites have been synthesized using flux technique (x=0.2, 0.4, 0.5 - in the initial flux system). Structural properties of the synthesized compounds were studied by the single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Obtained results were analyzed in the relationship with parent compound Cu2MnBO5. It was revealed that the type of monoclinic distortions of Fe-substituted ludwigites is different from the structure of Cu2MnBO5. The real cation composition and local structure of Cu2Mn1-xFexBO5 ludwigites were studied using XANES and EXAFS techniques, respectively. Analysis of field and thermal dependencies of magnetization showed a strong dependence of the magnetic properties of these ludwigites on x with changing the type of magnetic ordering.
