Аннотация: We present first study of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Ho3+ ion in C4v local symmetry, which it has in fluorite Na0.4Ho0.6F2.2. Optical absorption and MCD spectra were studied in this single crystal in the region of 5I8> 5F3, 5F2, 3K8 and 5G5 transitions in the temperature range 3.6–––90 K. It was revealed, that number of transitions observed in the MCD and absorption spectra coincides with the number of transitions only from the doublet E state to singlet excited states. The E-E type transitions are not active in MCD, but they are not observed in the absorption spectra either. Paramagnetic magneto-optical activities (MOA) of the absorption bands and their temperature dependences were measured and interpreted with the help of the theory based on the nature of f-f transitions allowance. The MCD spectra were also analyzed in approximation of the J,±MJ wave functions of the free atom. It was shown in particular, that the lowest initial state of the transitions observed at T ˃ 10 K had MJ = 7, but this is not the lowest state of the holmium ion in the crystal. A little lower there is a quasi-doublet with MJ = 8 and, accordingly, with a higher magneto-optical activity of transitions from it. However, the intensity of transitions from this state is low.

Аннотация: Polarized absorption spectra of crystal Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 in the region of the 5I8→5F5 absorption band of Ho ions were investigated depending on temperature in the range of 5–20 K. Absorption spectra are decomposed into components of the Lorentz form. The spin-reorientation phase transition was detected at 6.9 K. The observed line position shifts during the reorientation transition were different for different lines, which indicated different local magnetic anisotropy of the Ho ion in its excited states. Significant changes in absorption line intensities as a function of temperature were observed during the reorientation transition and above. These were explained as a consequence of the change in even components of the local crystal field in excited states. These components mix the closely spaced 4f states. Distortion of local symmetry in the ground state was detected at one of the electron transitions.

Аннотация: We measured spectra of magnetic linear dichroism (MLD) of 5I8 → 5F2, 5F3 transitions in the basal plane of the HoFe3(BO3)4 single crystal in the light propagated along the trigonal c-axis at temperature 2 K as a function of magnetic field 0 – 65 kOe directed along a and b axes. The substantial anisotropy of the MLD in the basal plane was revealed. The anisotropy of the MLD is strongly different for different electron transitions, that is, the MLD is mainly connected with the excited electron states. Transformations of the MLD spectra permitted us to retrace variations of the Ho ion magnetic moment orientation in different excited electron states as a function of the magnetic field. It was shown that in the excited states the local Ho magnetic moments do not reveal reorientation transitions synchronously with that of the Fe-sublattice. A small splitting of the ground doublet of the Ho3+ ion was observed during certain electron transitions. This means that during these electron transitions the local crystal field can change not only in the excited but in the ground state as well.

Аннотация: We measured optical absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of Na0.4Ho0.6F2.2 single crystal in the region of 5I8→ 5F3, 5F2 and 3K8 transitions in Ho3+ ion at 90 K and room temperature. The MCD spectra were also analyzed in approximation of the |J, ±MJ› wave functions of the free atom and using concept of the crystal quantum number. Using this concept and experimental paramagnetic MOA, we found that MJeff = 2.1 for the initial state of the 5I8→ 5F3 transition.

Аннотация: The polarized optical absorption spectra in the region of a series of the f–f transitions of Nd3+ ions in the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4, Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4, and NdFe3(BO3)4 crystals at 90 K have been compared. The spectral features related to the difference in the local environment of Nd3+ ions in these crystals have been established. In the region of the transition 4I9/2 → 4G5/2 + 2G7/2 of Nd3+ ions in the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 crystal, the appearance of some absorption lines at the structural transition R32 → P3121 around ~200 K due to the local symmetry variation has been found. The intensity of these lines smoothly increases with a decrease in temperature from the transition point. The temperature dependence of the lattice parameters of the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 crystal has been measured. It has been found that, at the transition temperature, the lattice parameter a changes stepwise, which is indicative of the occurrence of a first-order phase transition. The lattice parameter c changes smoothly.
