Аннотация: The director configuration in a bipolar drop of a nematic with rigidly fixed poles is calculated as a function of the electric field directed perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the drop. It is shown that the reorientation of the drop is a dual process: a threshold process in the region where the initial director orientation is orthogonal to the electric field, and a nonthreshold process elsewhere in the drop. A relation for determining the critical field is obtained. Experimental investigations of the characteristics of scattered light for a film of polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals confirm the computational results. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. Аннотация: The nematic droplets with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the droplets formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical nematic droplets by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the droplets under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.

Аннотация: The transmission spectra of polarized light waves in a photonic crystal/liquid crystal (PC/LC) cell placed between crossed polarizers and controlled by an electric or magnetic field have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Electro- and magneto-optical switching based on the interference of polarized defect modes has been demonstrated. The transmission spectra of the PC/LC cell have been calculated as a function of the voltage applied to the LC layer and the magnetic field strength. The results of the calculations agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: The electro-optical characteristics of a composite film based on a polymer containing dispersed nematic liquid crystal (NLC) doped with an ionic surfactant have been studied. The threshold character of the reorientation of NLC droplets as well as the dependence of the modulation amplitude of light transmission on the electric field strength has been revealed for the effect of ionic modification of surface anchoring. The dynamical parameters of the optical response have been determined.

Аннотация: A numerical method has been developed for calculating the director configuration in ellipsoidal droplets of a nematic liquid crystal with strong tangential anchoring in a uniform magnetic field of an arbitrary orientation. A relation has been obtained for determining the Friedericksz threshold corresponding to the beginning of the reorientation of the central region of a droplet when the field is orthogonal to the biopolar axis. The effect of the breaking of the orthogonal condition on the threshold character of the orientation process is considered. The reorientation of the ensemble of bipolar droplets of the 5CB nematic liquid crystal dispersed in polyvinyl butyral has been studied by the magneto-optical method. Comparative analysis of calculation data and measured values of the threshold field has been performed.

Аннотация: The dynamics of the optical response of a polymer-dispersed nematic liquid crystal under the action of electric field pulses was experimentally studied for film samples differing in the size of nematic droplets. The optical signal relaxation curve exhibits an oscillating character, with the number of oscillations determined by the transverse size of the nematic droplets. The interference character of the signal oscillations is confirmed by an analysis of the oscillating response within the framework of the anomalous diffraction approximation and by a comparison with the dependence of the transmitted light intensity on the applied voltage measured in a static regime. Аннотация: The method of modulation of transmittance of a multilayer photonic crystal with a nematic liquid-crystal defect upon the orientational transition from the homeotropic to the planar state is investigated. The orientation of the director of the nematic is controlled by a magnetic field in the B-effect mode. The method of recurrent relations is used for numerical simulation of transmission spectra of the photonic crystal structure under investigation.
