Аннотация: Films were prepared from 2% solutions of biodegradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and investigated. The polymer was synthesized by the Cupriavidus necator B-10646 bacterium cultivated using various carbon sources (glucose and glycerol of different degrees of purity, containing 0.3 to 17.93% impurities). Glycerol as the substrate influenced molecular-weight properties and crystallinity of the polymer without affecting its temperature characteristics. The P(3HB) specimens synthesized from glycerol had reduced Mw (300–400 kDa) and degree of crystallinity (50–55%) compared to the specimens synthesized from glucose (860 kDa and 76%, respectively). The low-crystallinity P(3HB) specimens, regardless of the degree of purity of glycerol, produced a beneficial effect on the properties of polymer films, which had a better developed folded surface and increased hydrophilicity. The values of the highest roughness (Ra) of the films synthesized from glycerol were 1.8 to 4.0 times lower and the water angles 1.4–1.6 times smaller compared to the films synthesized from glucose (71.75 nm and 87.4°, respectively). Those films performed better as cell scaffolds: the number of viable NIH fibroblasts was 1.7–1.9 times higher than on polystyrene (control) or films of P(3HB) synthesized from glucose.

Аннотация: In this paper, the heat affected zone (HAZ) of laser welded joints of the X70 steel were studied by the transmission electron microscopy method. The effect of the initial microstructure (coarse-grained hot-rolled and fine-grained after cross-helical rolling) on the HAZ formation and the mechanical characteristics of the welded joints were shown. It was found that the microstructure in the inter-critical HAZ of the steel after cross-helical rolling was more dispersed, homogeneous, and uniform compared to that of the coarse-grained hot-rolled one due to the initial fine-grained ferrite-bainitic-pearlite microstructure and the absence of pronounced ferrite-pearlite banding in the base metal. The character of the microhardness value distribution in the HAZ of the steel after cross-helical rolling was smooth with the gradual decrease from 370 down to 185 HV as shifted towards the base metal. In the HAZ of the coarse-grained hot-rolled steel, the heterogeneous microhardness value (up to 640–670 НV) distribution was revealed. The reason was the upper degenerate bainite microstructure with high residual stresses, characterized by laths up to 2.0–2.5 μm long and a high martensitic-austenitic constituent fraction (10–16%) of a slender shape along the boundaries of bainite laths. The conclusion was drawn that one of the ways to reduce the brittleness of the laser welded joints could be using the initially fine-grained steels possessing the homogeneous (mainly bainitic) microstructure.

Аннотация: A kinetic model of fullerene formation in the carbon-helium plasma of an arc discharge was proposed. In the model, in addition to the coagulation of carbon clusters, the cluster isomerization and their cooling with a buffer gas were taken into account. The simulation results of the fullerene formation are in qualitatively agreement with the experimental data, i.e., the fraction of higher fullerenes increases at high pressures in the fullerene mixture.

Аннотация: We have investigated the spin and oxidation states of Co in Co3BO5 using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and dc magnetic susceptibility measurements. At low temperatures, XMCD experiments have been performed at the Co K-edge in Co3BO5 and Co2FeBO5 single crystals in the fully ferrimagnetically ordered phase. The Co (K-edge) XMCD signal is found to be related to the Co2+ magnetic sublattices in both compounds, providing strong experimental support for the low-spin (LS) Co3+ scenario. The paramagnetic susceptibility is highly anisotropic. An estimation of the effective magnetic moment in the temperature range 100–250 K correlates well with two Co2+ ions in the high-spin (HS) state and some orbital contribution, while Co3+ remains in the LS state. The crystal structure of the Co3BO5 single crystal has been solved in detail at the T range 296–703 K. The unit cell parameters and volume show anomalies at 500 and 700 K. The octahedral environment of the Co4 site strongly changes with heating. The generalized gradient approximation with Hubbard U correction calculations have revealed that, at low-temperatures, the system is insulating with a band gap of 1.4 eV, and the Co2+ ions are in the HS state, while Co3+ are in the LS state. At high temperatures (T 700 K), the charge ordering disappears, and the system becomes metallic with all Co ions in 3d7 electronic configuration and HS state.

Аннотация: We present novel polyethylene (PE) composites for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding application. They are based on cobalt modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) produced via in situ polymerization of ethylene, with the Ti-Ziegler–Natta catalyst preliminarily immobilized on Co/MWCNT hybrids. The electromagnetic properties of the composites were tuned by varying the filler loading and Co:MWCNT ratio. The microstructure of the composites and electromagnetic absorption process were carefully characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance and vector network analysis. The electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of the nanocomposite were investigated in the 10 MHz−18 GHz frequency range revealing that the EMI absorption properties can be tuned by varying the Co:MWCNT weight ratio in the filler. Interestingly, the Co/MWCNT-PE composite with a total filler and Co loading of only 12 and 1.7 wt%, respectively, showed extremely high reflection loss (RL) of −55 dB. More importantly, an effective bandwidth of 12.8–17.8 GHz (RL below −10 dB) was achieved for a matching thickness of only 1.5 mm. The specific RL value (RL/filler loading) of the composite was superior in comparison with the previously reported nanostructured carbon materials. The highly effective absorbing properties of Co/MWCNT-PE composites are explained primarily by the unprecedented uniform filler distribution in the polyethylene as well as by the synergistic effect of MWCNTs and Co nanoparticles. This approach thus offered an effective strategy to design cost-effective, lightweight and flexible EMI shielding materials with tunable dielectric and magnetic performance.

Аннотация: A composite based on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) added with 1 wt % of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a high permittivity (ε = 4.5) and a low dielectric loss (tanδ = 10–2) in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz has been synthesized, and its main mechanical characteristics have been studied. The material has a low (22 MPa) breaking strength, a high (700%) tensile elongation, and an abrasion resistance higher than that of pure UHMWPE by 37%. It is shown using the X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry data that the changes in the mechanical properties of the composite are related to the changes in the polymer matrix structure under the action of the high-intensity ultrasonic radiation used for embedding MWCNTs into the polymer.

Аннотация: The influence of ultrasonic treatment on the strength and dielectric properties of composites based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is studied. It is revealed that the ultrasonic treatment of composite melt at 130 °C results in the uniform distribution of nanotubes in the UHMWPE matrix, an increase in the degree of composite crystallinity by 10%, an increase in abrasion resistance by 37%, an increase in elongation at rupture by a factor of 2. The change in the physical and mechanical properties of the composite is caused by the change in the polymer matrix structure, taking place as a result of ultrasonic action, and does not depend on the presence of nanotubes in the polymer matrix.

Аннотация: The effect of the residual catalyst for the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the electrophysical properties of MWCNT-polyethylene composites produced by melt mechanical mixing was studied. The residual catalyst content was varied by changing the MWCNTs synthesis time. The nanotubes used in the work were characterized using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, atomic emission analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and magnetic permeability measurements. The structure of the synthesized composites was studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The dependences of the specific magnetization on the applied magnetic field, bulk electrical conductivity on the volumetric content of the filler in the composite, and the frequency dependences of the reflection, transmission, and absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the range 0.01-18 GHz were obtained. It was established that the obtained composites are characterized by a uniform distribution of nanotubes in the polymer matrix, and the dependence of the bulk electrical conductivity on the content of MWCNTs in the composite has a percolation character. Variation in the synthesis time of nanotubes allows producing MWCNTs with a high content of ferromagnetic particles, which are an alloy close in stoichiometry to the composition of the active component of the catalyst. It was shown that the use of composites modified with MWCNTs with a high content of residual catalyst is more effective for absorbing electromagnetic radiation due to an increase in their magnetic losses.

Аннотация: Nowadays polymer matrix-based composite material with various carbon fillers are widely used to protect radioequipment from different interference, to improve characteristics of radar absorbing coatings. Current synthesis processes are sophisticated and rather costly. The challenge is to develop new methods of producing composite materials by efficient knowledge intensive technologies to reduce the cost of products. The paper studies possibility of producing composite material on the basis of elastic polyurethane foam with carbon fillers using polyurethane impregnation in nonequilibrium black carbon suspension. Suspension composition: running water and carbon-bearing powders of nanometer range: fullerene black carbon, Taunite (multi-layer carbon nano tube material), technical carbon T900, wood soot. Nonequilibrium suspension was produced by treatment in hydrodynamic generator of rotor type (cavitation mode). Angular rotation speed of the rotor ω = 10000 rpm.

Аннотация: Core–shell FexOy@C nanoparticles (NPs) modified with Ag were studied with x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive elemental mapping, Mössbauer spectroscopy, static magnetic measurements, and optical magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). FexOy@C NPs synthesized by the pyrolysis process of the mixture of Fe(NO3)3 centerdot 9H2O with oleylamine and oleic acid were added to a heated mixture of oleylamine and AgNO3 in different concentrations. The final product was a mixture of iron oxide crystalline NPs in an amorphous carbon shell and Ag crystalline NPs. The iron oxide NPs were presented by two magnetic phases with extremely close crystal structures: Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3. Ag is shown to form crystalline NPs located very close to the iron oxide NPs. An assumption is made about the formation of hybrid FexOy@C-Ag NPs. Correlations were obtained between the Ag concentration in the fabricated samples, their magnetic properties and the MCD spectrum shape. Introducing Ag led to a approximately linear decrease of the NPs saturation magnetization depending upon the Ag concentration, it also resulted into the MCD spectrum shift to the lower light wave energies. MCD was also studied for the Fe3O4@C NPs synthesized earlier with the same one-step process using different heat treatment temperatures, and MCD spectra were compared for two series of NPs. A possible contribution of the surface plasmon excitation in Ag NPs to the MCD spectrum of the FexOy@C-Ag NPs is discussed.

Аннотация: The single-walled carbon nanotube-based thin films with a thickness from 11 ± 3 to 157 ± 18 nm have been formed using vacuum filtration. The thermal conductivity of the thin films as a function of thickness and temperature up to 450 K has been studied by the 3ω technique. It has been found that, in the region of 49 nm, the supplied heat from a gold strip started propagating with the high efficiency to the thin film plane. The thermal conductivity of the thin films with a thickness of 49 ± 8 nm was measured using the 3ω technique for bulk samples. It has been found that the thermal conductivity of the single-walled carbon nanotube-based thin films strongly depends on their thickness and temperature. The thermal conductivity sharply (by a factor of ~60) increases with an increase in thickness from 11 ± 3 to 65 ± 4 nm. In addition, it has been observed that the thermal conductivity of the thin film with a thickness of 157 ± 18 nm rapidly decreases from 211 ± 11 to 27.5 ± 1.4 W m–1 K–1 at 300 and 450 K, respectively.

Аннотация: Ferrite-bainite microstructures and impact toughness of the X65 low-carbon microalloyed steel were investigated after helical rolling at 1000, 920, 850, and 810 °C followed by continuous cooling in air. After helical rolling at 1000 °C, granular bainite with large areas of the massive-shape martensite-austenite constituent (d = 1.5 μm) and a high fraction of twinned martensite (d › 2.0 μm) were observed in the steel. This caused a decrease in impact energy at low test temperatures (for example, 70 J at –70°С). Lowering the helical rolling temperature contributed to a reduction of dimensions of both ferrite-bainite and martensite-austenite constituent areas, as well as the replacement of the latter by a slender type one and an improvement in fracture toughness at the low temperatures. The highest impact energy level (210 J at –70 °C) was achieved after helical rolling at 850 °C due to the formation of a homogeneous microstructure, which included dispersed ferrite grains, granular bainite and small fractions of the slender type martensite-austenite constituent (d = 0.1–0.7 μm). In this case, areas of twinned martensite were absent.

Аннотация: MAX-фазы представляют собой семейство тройных слоистых соединений с формальной стехиометрией Mn+1AXn (n = 1, 2, 3…), где М – переходный d-металл; А – p-элемент (например, Si, Ge, Al, S, Sn и др.); Х – углерод или азот [1]. Слоистые тройные карбиды и нитриды d- и p-элементов (MAX-фазы) проявляют уникальное сочетание свойств, характерных как для металлов, так и для керамики, что делает их применение перспективным в космической отрасли в качестве различных покрытий. Получение требуемых свойств MAX-фаз зависит от технологических условий синтеза материала. Для этого необходимо тщательное теоретическое моделирование взаимодействия элементов на границе раздела. Одновременный рост конкурирующих фаз наряду с MAX-фазой может происходить из-за выгодности образования конкурирующих фаз, а также из-за более низко-энергетического интерфейса с подложкой по сравнению с MAX-фазой. В данной работе мы изучаем термодинамическую выгодность конкурирующих фаз и MAX-фазы Cr2GaC в зависимости от химического состава потока атомов. Для изучения этих соединений было необходимо рассмотреть систему Cr-Ga-C. Согласно модели эффективной теплоты образования каждую реакцию образования некоторой фазы можно охарактеризовать энтальпией [2]. Для выяснения наиболее вы-годных к формированию фаз было необходимо произвести расчёт энтальпии для всех возможных реакций. Таким образом, задача состояла в переборе всех возможных реакций между чистыми элементами, доступными в различных соотношениях, в частности, в соотношении, соответствующем заданной стехиометрии MAX-фазы, т. е. Cr:Ga:C=2:1:1. Кроме того, считается, что плотность совпадающих узлов [3; 4] для границ раздела между MAX-фазой, термодинамически выгодными конкурирующими фазами и поверхностью MgO(111) показывает роль интерфейса при определении структурного качества тонкой плёнки MAX-фазы, выращенной на MgO(111).MAX-phases are a family of ternary layered compounds with the formal stoichiometry Mn+1AXn (n = 1, 2, 3...), where M is a transition d-metal; A is a p-element (for example, Si, Ge, Al, S, Sn, etc.); X is carbon or nitrogen [1]. Layered triple carbides and nitrides of d-and p-elements (MAX-phases) exhibit a unique combination of properties characteristic of both metals and ceramics, which makes their application as various coatings in space industry very promising. Obtaining the desired properties of the MAX-phases depends on the technological conditions of material synthesis. This requires thorough theoretical modelling of the elements’ interaction at the interface. Concurrent growth of competing phases along with the MAX-phase may occur due to the favorability of the formation of competing phases and also be promoted by lower energy interfaces with the substrate in comparison with a MAX-phase. In this work, we study thermodynamic favorability of competing phases and Cr2GaC MAX-phase depending on the chemical composition of the atomic flow. To study these compounds, it was necessary to consider the Cr-Ga-C system. According to the effective heat of formation model, each reaction of the formation of a certain phase can be characterized by enthalpy [2]. To find out the most favorable phases, it was necessary to calculate the enthalpy of all possible reactions. Thus, the task was to sort through all possible reactions between pure elements available in various ratios, in particular, in the ratio corresponding to the given MAX-phase stoichiometry, i.e. Cr:Ga:C=2:1: 1. Moreover, it is considered that the density of near-coincidence sites [3,4] for interfaces between MAX-phase, thermodynamically favourable competing phases and MgO(111) surface shows a role of the interface in the determination of the structural quality of the MAX-phase thin film grown on MgO(111).

Аннотация: The present paper reports a new method of producing N-doped carbon nanofibers via metal dusting of a ternary NiMoW alloy in the atmosphere containing C2HCl3 and CH3CN vapors at 600 °C. The initial alloy was prepared by a co-precipitation technique. The carbon deposition was monitored gravimetrically. The early stages of the metal dusting process were studied in detail using scanning and transmission electron microscopies. It was established that the rapid disintegration of the microdispersed NiMoW alloy with the formation of nanosized particles catalyzing the growth of carbon filaments occurs within the first 5 min of the reaction. The presence of C2HCl3 vapors in the reaction medium was shown to be the urgent condition to provide efficient metal dusting. The effect of the CH3CN concentration in the trichloroethylene-containing reaction mixture on the carbon deposition is investigated. As observed, the CH3CN content noticeable affects the carbon yield (after 2 h of reaction). The dome-shaped dependence of carbon yield reaches its maximal value of ~ 200 g/g(cat) at a CH3CN concentration of 33 vol%. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the obtained carbon filaments are functionalized with Cl (0.1–1.2 wt%), O (3–6 wt%), and N (0.5–1.3 wt%). The prepared carbon filaments possess a segmented secondary structure, which is typical for carbon nanomaterials derived via catalytic decomposition of chlorine-substituted hydrocarbons. Low-temperature nitrogen adsorption measurement revealed that the specific surface area of the N-containing samples varies in a range from 370 to 550 m2/g.

Аннотация: In this work, through the technology of producing endohedral metallofullerene in macroscopic quantities, the process of pressure polymerization of Sc2C2@C82 and their mechanical properties have been investigated in detail using a set of experimental and theoretical methods. The crucial role of endohedral atoms is demonstrated by comparison with pristine fullerenes. It is shown that the embedding of Sc2C2 complex inside a fullerene significantly facilitates the polymerization process which finally leads to the highly rigid material at high pressures.

Аннотация: Nanoporous membranes with electrically conductive surface represent an important class of stimuli–responsive materials. The variation of surface potential provides a powerful tool for adjusting ionic selectivity, conductivity, and rejection. This work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental study of switchable ionic selectivity. The one–dimensional Space charge (SC) and two–dimensional Uniform potential (UP) models are first generalized to constant surface potential case taking into account the Stern layer with inner (iHp) and outer (oHp) Helmholtz planes. The ionic selectivity is investigated experimentally by measuring the membrane potential at zero current for C–Nafen membranes prepared from alumina nanofibers with conductive carbon coating. The evolution of charging current is used to determine the dependence of surface charge density and differential capacitance on the applied potential. These data are fitted by the UP and SC models to find the Stern layer capacitance. It is shown that the variation of surface potential results in a continuous change of ionic selectivity from anion to cation. The membrane potential data are fitted by the UP and SC models using the chemical charge density and concentration boundary layer thickness as fitting parameters. It allows to determine the potential, at which the membrane becomes non–selective. The SC and UP models provide close results for membrane potential and surface charge density and demonstrate a good agreement with the experimental data. The UP model overestimates the solution velocity and ion concentrations at the membrane surface, while it underestimates the ion fluxes and iHp/oHp potentials. This work essentially extends our understanding of ion transport in stimuli–responsive membranes operated by the electric field. The results can be applied in the area of nanofiltration, (reverse) electrodialysis, electrochemical sensors, and nanofluidic devices.

Аннотация: In theoretical simulations of a UV + x-ray pump-probe (UVX-PP) setup, we show that frequency detuning of the pump UV pulse acts as a camera shutter by regulating the duration of the UVX-PP process. This two-photon absorption with long overlapping UV and x-ray pulses, allowing for high spectral resolution, thereby provides information about ultrafast dynamics of the nuclear wave packet without the requirement of ultrashort pulses and controlled delay times. In a case study of carbon monoxide, the calculated UVX-PP spectra of the O1s−12π1 and C1s−12π1 core-excited states show different vibrational profiles. The interference of intermediate vibrational states reveals details of nuclear dynamics in the UVX-PP process related to a variable duration time controlled by the UV detuning. Both O1s−12π1 and C1s−12π1 pump-probe channels display a splitting of the spectral profile, which however is associated with different physical mechanisms. At the O1s−12π1 resonance, the observed dispersive and non-dispersive spectral bands intersect and result in destructive interference.

Аннотация: Nanostructured 1 and 3% catalysts containing ruthenium nanoparticles supported on the initial and oxidized at different temperatures graphite-like carbon material Sibunit-4 prepared. A features of this support are mesoporous texture, hydrothermal stability and the presence of surface oxygen-containing functional groups responsible for the distribution of Ru nanoparticles and the catalyst acidic properties. The catalysts characterized using methods TEM, XPS, N2 adsorption, pHpzc and tested in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone. It was found that the reaction rate and GVL selectivity are influenced by solvent choice, fractional composition, and acidic properties of the support. The obtained catalysts provide high activity in the reaction of direct hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone (GVL yield 98 mol.%, At 160°С, 1.2 MPa H2) and high productivity (15.9 gGVL/gCat.). Obtained catalyst can be reused several times without noticeable loss of activity.Синтезированы наноструктурированные 1 и 3 % катализаторы, содержащие наночастицы рутения, закрепленные на исходном и окисленном при разных температурах графитоподобном углеродном материале Cибунит‑4. Особенность данного носителя состоит в его мезопористой текстуре, гидротермальной устойчивости и наличии на поверхности кислородсодержащих функциональных групп, ответственных за распределение наночастиц Ru и кислотные свойства катализатора. Катализаторы исследованы физико-химическими методами (ПЭМ, РФЭС, адсорбция N2, pHтнз) и испытаны в реакции гидрирования левулиновой кислоты до γ-валеролактона. Установлено, что на скорость реакции и селективность процесса по отношению к ГВЛ оказывают влияние такие факторы, как выбранный растворитель, фракционный состав и кислотные свойства носителя. Полученные катализаторы показали высокую активность в реакции прямого гидрирования левулиновой кислоты до γ-валеролактона (выход ГВЛ 98 мол.% при 160 ºС, 1.2 МПа H2) и высокую производительность (15.9 г ГВЛ/г кат.). Данный катализатор может быть использован многократно без заметной потери активности.
