Аннотация: The high-pressure magnetic states of iron borate (FeBO3)-Fe-57 single-crystal and powder samples have been investigated in diamond anvil cells by nuclear forward scattering (NFS) of synchrotron radiation at different temperatures. In the low-pressure (0 < P < 46 GPa) antiferromagnetic phase, an increase of the Neel temperature from 350 to 595 K induced by pressure was found. At pressures 46-49 GPa, a transition from the antiferromagnetic to a new magnetic state with a weak magnetic moment (magnetic collapse) was discovered. It is attributed to the electronic transition in Fe3+ ions from the high-spin 3d(5) (S = 5/2, (6)A(1g)) to the low-spin (S = 1/2, T-2(2g)) state (spin crossover) due to the insulator-semiconductor-type transition with extensive suppression of strong d-d electron correlations. At low temperatures, NFS spectra of the high-pressure phase indicate magnetic correlations in the low-spin system with a magnetic ordering temperature of about 50 K. A tentative magnetic P-T phase diagram of FeBO3 is proposed. An important feature of this diagram is the presence of two triple points where magnetic and paramagnetic phases of the high-spin and low-spin states coexist. © 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: We describe a new method for obtaining liquid crystal (LC) layers with planar orientation in plane-parallel cells, which is based on the technology of LC-polymer interface formation in solution under the action of an applied magnetic field. The azimuthal anchoring energy of LC at the polymer surface has been determined by measuring the angle of orientation of the nematic LC director on the substrate surface as a function of the magnetic field. The LC orientation provided by the proposed method is stable, and the anisotropy of LC anchoring is comparable with that achieved using well-known methods of alignment polymer film preparation by rubbing.

Аннотация: Complex cobalt oxides known as cobaltites are reviewed, including LnCoO(3)-based perovskite-structured rare-earth cobaltites (where Ln is lanthanum or a lanthanide), quasi-two-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional cobaltites of the types LnCo(2)O(5+delta), La2CoO4, and Ca3Co2O8, and NaxCoO2 center dot yH(2)O superconducting compounds. Key experimental and theoretical results are presented, with emphasis on the interplay between charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom. Two problems of specific relevance to cobaltites - the spin state instability of Co3+ ions in LnCoO(3), and the nature of superconductivity in NaxCoO2 center dot yH(2)O - are also given significant attention.

Аннотация: Neutron diffraction, susceptibility and magnetization measurements (for R = Er only) were performed on iron borates RFe3(BO3)(4) (R = Pr, Er) to investigate details of the crystallographic structure, the low temperature magnetic structures and transitions and to study the role of the rare earth anisotropy. PrFe3(BO3)(4), which crystallizes in the spacegroup R32, becomes antiferromagnetic at T-N = 32 K, with t = [0 0 3/2], while ErFe3(BO3)(4), which keeps the P3(1)21 symmetry over the whole studied temperature range 1.5 K T 520 K, becomes antiferromagnetic below T-N

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum of a multilayer photonic crystal with a central liquid-crystal defect layer placed between crossed polarizers has been studied. Transmittance was varied due to the magnetically induced reorientation of the nematic director from homeotropic to planar alignment. Two notable effects were observed for this scheme: the spectral shift of defect modes corresponding to the extraordinary light wave and its superposition with the ordinary one. As a result, the optical cell allows controlling the intensity of interfering defect modes by applied magnetic field. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We present a theoretical study of the electronic structure of bilayer HTSC cuprates and its evolution under doping and in a high magnetic field. Analysis is based on the t-t'-taEuro(3)-J* model in the generalized Hartree-Fock approximation. Possibility of tunneling between CuO2 layers is taken into account in the form of a nonzero integral of hopping between the orbitals of adjacent planes and is included in the scheme of the cluster form of perturbation theory. The main effect of the coupling between two CuO2 layers in a unit cell is the bilayer splitting manifested in the presence of antibonding and bonding bands formed by a combination of identical bands of the layers themselves. A change in the doping level induces reconstruction of the band structure and the Fermi surface, which gives rise to a number of quantum phase transitions. A high external magnetic field leads to a fundamentally different form of electronic structure. Quantum phase transitions in the field are observed not only under doping, but also upon a variation of the field magnitude. Because of tunneling between the layers, quantum transitions are also split; as a result, a more complex sequence of the Lifshitz transitions than in single-layer structures is observed.

Аннотация: Neutron diffraction measurements were performed on the iron borate DyFe3(BO3)4 to investigate details of the crystallographic structure, the low temperature magnetic structure and its magnetic properties. DyFe3(BO3)4 adopts at room temperature the P3121 symmetry and becomes antiferromagnetic below TN = 39 K. Both, the rare earth and the iron sublattice, follow the same magnetic propagation vector τ = [0, 0, ½] which leads to a doubling of the crystallographic unit cell in the c-direction. The easy axis anisotropy of the rare earth determines the moment orientation to be mainly along c. No spin reorientation is found between TN and 1.5 K, however, a small anomaly in the thermal dependence of the unit cell a-parameter is found at about 27 K which could be connected to repopulation of low lying Kramers doublets of Dy3+. The magnetic moment value of the Fe-moment is at 1.5 K with μFe = 4.5 μB only slightly smaller than expected for an S = 5/2 ion while the Dy moment is strongly reduced and amounts only to μDy = 6.4 μB.

Аннотация: В работе охарактеризовано «семейство» клеточных носителей из резорбируемого полиэфира Биопластотан, представляющего собой сополимер 3- и 4-гидроксипро-изводных масляной кислоты. С применением различных технологий сконструированы пленочные и 3D носители, а также наноматриксы, образованные ультратонкими волокнами, полученные методом электростатического формования. Все типы носителей обеспечивают адгезию муль-типотентных мезенхимных стромальных клеток костного мозга и пригодны для культивирования и дифференцировки мультипотентных мезенхимных стромальных клеток в клетки остеобластического ряда. Последнее подтверждено детектированием в культуре клеток внеклеточных преципитатов кальция, активности щелочной фосфатазы и продукции остеопонтина.

Аннотация: IIn this study, electrospinning was used to prepare ultrafine fibers from PHAs with different chemical compositions: P(3HB) and copolymers: P(3HB-co-4HB), P(3HB-co-3HV), and P(3HB-co-3HHx). The main process parameters that influence ultrafine fiber diameter and properties (polymer concentration, solution feeding rate, working distance, and applied voltage) have been investigated and their effects evaluated. The study revealed electrospinning parameters for the production of high-quality ultrafine fibers and determined which parameters should be varied to tailor the properties of the products. This study is the first to compare biological and physical-mechanical parameters of PHAs with different chemical compositions as dependent upon the fractions of monomers constituting the polymers and ultrafine fiber orientation. Mechanical strength of aligned ultrafine fibers prepared from different PHAs is higher than that of randomly oriented ones; no significant effect of ultrafine fiber orientation on surface properties has been found. None of the fibrous scaffolds produced by electrospinning from PHAs had any adverse effects on attachment, growth, and viability of NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cells, and all of them were found to be suitable for tissue engineering applications.

Аннотация: A cold finger cell intended for the wax deposition measurements was fabricated and integrated into an NMR imaging probe for the noninvasive study of wax precipitation processes in situ. The cell was first tested with a model system; then, a series of experiments with different thermal gradients applied to the cell were performed for a waxy crude oil. NMR imaging of the operating cell revealed the formation of a deposit with the morphology and dynamics strongly correlating with the temperature regime. At higher temperatures of cold finger, the incipient wax gel ages uniformly, giving rise to the hard and thin inner layer of deposit accompanied by a branched loosely consolidated outer layer. Conversely, the lower temperatures facilitate formation of a thick deposit which no longer ages uniformly and slow down the diffusion-controlled growth of the branched deposit structure. The results obtained are consistent with the majority of the data previously reported. Thus, gelation of the wax at temperatures below the cloud point and subsequent thermal-driven diffusion processes are considered to be the dominant mechanisms of the deposit formation. The counter diffusion and Ostwald ripening aging concepts were found to be relevant in the case of the cold finger study and account for the phenomena observed in this work. The information obtained via NMR imaging is highly complementary to the results obtained by other techniques that can aid in understanding the essential processes behind the wax precipitation phenomena. The approach developed can be effectively extended to study any thermal-driven phase separation process. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: The precipitation of iron and associated heavy metals in industrial waste water and in model solution using ferritization and aerobic bacterial culture was investigated. Magnetic sediments extractable by magnetic separation (specific saturation magnetization of 16–36.8 G cm3/g) were produced by precipitation of iron by ferritization method at рН (8–10) and 60–80°С for 15–30 min. Nanoparticles of ferrihydrite or ferric hydroxide doped with associated metals (Co, Ni) were produced under precipitation of ferric iron in model solution with bacteria at the temperature 26–34°С. The radii of synthesized particles are 1–5 nm and nanoparticles of ferrihydrite are superparamagnetic in both un-doped and doped (Co, Ni, Zn) sets. Dispersed structure of biogenic nanoparticle sols, their magnetic and other properties were studied by atomic force microscopy, X-ray small-angle scattering, X-ray diffraction, electron magnetic resonance, Mössbauer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Аннотация: Selective action of laser radiation on membranes of malignant cells has been studied in different regimes using conjugates of gold nanoparticles with oligonucleotides by the example of DNA aptamers. Under the conditions of a contact between a bioconjugate and a cell surface and the development of substantial and rapidly relaxing temperature gradients near a nanoparticle, the membranes of malignant cells alone are efficiently damaged due to the local hyperthermia of a cellular membrane. It has been shown that employment of pulsed instead of continuous wave laser radiation provides the localization of the damaging action, which does not involve healthy cells. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: A method to modulate the defect modes intensity in a multilayer photonic crystal with a nematic liquid crystal layer arranged midmost has been proposed. The various electro-hydrodynamic domain structures (Williams domains, oblique rolls and grid pattern) were formed in the nematic layer under the action of ac electric field. The domains cause a polarization-sensitive light scattering which leads to an anisotropic reduction of the defect modes intensity. Thus by varying the applied voltage, we can tune gradually the transmittance spectrum of photonic crystal. In addition, the spectrum strongly depends on the light polarization direction above threshold voltage. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Here we describe a method of forming large arrays (up to 109 pieces) of free magnetic Ni-nanodisks 50 nm thick coated on both sides with layers of 5 nm thick Au. The antitumor effect of the magnetic nickel gold-coated nanodisks and DNA aptamer conjugates was evaluated in vivo and in vitro. Under the influence of rotating magnetic field, the studied nanodisks can cause the death of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells.

Аннотация: A new single phase based on the substitution of a Sr cation by a Ca cation in the apatite-type Sr5(PO4)2(SiO4) has been fabricated with the nominal chemical composition of Sr4Ca(PO4)2(SiO4), which appears as a definite compound rather than a solid solution between (Sr,Ca)3(PO4)2 and (Sr,Ca)2SiO4. The crystal structure of Sr4Ca(PO4)2(SiO4) has been firstly analysed by the difference electron map, and further resolved by the Rietveld refinement, and the final composition has been determined as Sr4Ca(PO4)(2+x)(SiO4)(1-x)(OH)x (x = 0.64) with a hexagonal cell (P63/m). The Ce3+/Eu2+ codoped Sr4Ca(PO4)2SiO4 phosphors have been designed and prepared by the solid state method, and the photoluminescence tuning from blue to green upon 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) radiation can be realized, which is ascribed to the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ ions. The luminescence properties and the energy transfer mechanism in Ce3+/Eu2+ codoped Sr4Ca(PO4)2SiO4 phosphors have been discussed, which might act as potential candidates for blue-green components in UV-pumped white light emitting diodes (WLEDs). © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
