Аннотация: We discuss the trapping features of cholesteric liquid crystal as a self-organized photonic crystal and suggest it for absorption improvement. The imperfection of the absorbing surface is manifested by the reflection originating from the indispensable impedance mismatch. The reflection can be suppressed by an additional surface coating to reflect the light back to the absorber once again. In the simple consideration this reflection loop is possible only twice. For a right-handed CLC coating, the boundary reflection switches the light polarization from left to right circular in the first loop and it switches in the second loop back to the left circular polarization before the emerging light finally escapes from the absorbing process. The enhancement of light absorption is possible in the frequency range as large as the photonic bang gap of the cholesteric layer, which can be adjusted as desired.

Аннотация: Исследуются спектральные свойства холестерического жидкого кристалла с дефектным слоем нанокомпозита, который состоит из металлических наношаров, диспергированных в прозрачной матрице, и характеризуется эффективной резонансной диэлектрической проницаемостью. Рассчитаны спектры пропускания, отражения и поглощения волн обеих циркулярных поляризаций таких структур, изучено спектральное проявление расщепления дефектной моды при совпадении ее частоты с резонансной частотой нанокомпозита. Установлена существенная зависимость расщепления от концентрации наношаров в дефекте. Показано, что, в зависимости от положения резонансной частоты относительно границ запрещенной зоны холестерика, в спектре пропускания возникает дополнительная полоса прозрачности, соответствующая волнам дифрагирующей круговой поляризации, либо дополнительная запрещенная зона для волн обеих круговых поляризаций, которые существенно модифицируются при вариации как угла падения света, так и шага спирали холестерика.

Аннотация: This paper reports on studying the spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a defective layer of a nanocomposite consisting of metallic nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and characterized by an effective resonance dielectric permittivity. The transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra of waves of both circular polarizations have been calculated, and the spectral splitting of the defective mode when its frequency coincides with the resonance frequency of the nanocomposite has been studied. An essential dependence of the splitting on the nanoball concentration in the defect has been established. It has been shown that, depending on the position of the resonance frequency with respect to the boundaries of the cho blesteric band gap, an additional passband appears in the transmission spectrum, which corresponds to waves of the diffracting circular polarization, or an additional band gap for waves of both circular polarizations, which are substantially modified with variations of both the incidence angle of light and the cholesteric helix pitch.

Аннотация: Experimental values of the mean polarizability of molecules, (gamma) over bar, and components of the Lorentz tensor, L-j, in the nematic and smectic A phases are obtained for a homologous series of n-alkyl-p-(4-ethoxybenzylideneamino)-alpha-methylcinnamates. Dependences of the (gamma) over bar and L-j values on the mesophase temperature, the orientational order parameter S of molecules, and the number n in the homologous series are revealed. The quadratic dependence of (gamma) over bar (S) in the nematic and smectic phases is established that is invariant with respect to the nematic-smectic A transition. Polarizability densities of the molecular core and the alkyl chain are found from the monotone decreasing dependence (gamma) over bar (n)/v (where v is volume per one molecule) in the smectic phase. The presence (or absence) of the odd-even alternation of L-j(n) in the nematic (smectic) phase is shown. A monotone decrease in the Lorentz tensor anisotropy L with an increase in n is revealed in the smectic phase, and limiting values L-j(n - infinity) are determined.

It is shown that the system can have an isolated waveguide surface mode with characteristics efficiently controllable by external fields acting on the cholesteric. Аннотация: We have studied spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a combined defect consisting of a nanocomposite layer and a twist. The nanocomposite layer is made of metallic nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and featuring effective resonant permittivity. A solution has been found for the transmission spectrum of circularly polarized waves in the structure. We have analyzed spectral splitting of the defect mode in the band gap of the cholesteric when its frequency coincides with the nanocomposite resonant frequency. Defect modes have characteristics strongly dependent on the magnitude and the sign of the phase difference of the cholesteric helix on both sides of the defect layer. It has been found that the band gap width and the position and localization degree of defect modes can be effectively controlled by external fields applied to the cholesteric.

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum has been calculated for a 'cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal' structure. It is shown that the system can have an isolated waveguide surface mode with characteristics efficiently controllable by external fields acting on the cholesteric. This mode is similar to optical Tamm state. We observed anisotropy of transmission of the structure under consideration in the propagation of light of a certain polarization in forward and backward directions. This property is inherent in optically chiral media, such as the cholesteric liquid crystal.

Аннотация: Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) materials used in electro-optical (EO) devices are characterized by high operating voltage and slow response speed, which hinders their further development in display applications. Dual-frequency CLCs (DFCLCs) can solve the problem of slow bistable transition, but the operating voltage is still high, especially in color-reflective DFCLC cells. Here we report a simple approach to lowering the switching voltage as well as to shortening the response time. This technique adopts hybrid surface treatment to modulate the structural arrangement of CLC molecules. Both planar-and vertical-alignment layers are employed and coated on one and the other substrates separately to improve the electro-optical properties of DFCLCs. We show that the threshold voltage for switching can be decreased to as low as 5 V and the shortest response time is measured to be 0.8 ms, which renders CLC EO devices including displays more practical for commercial purpose.

Аннотация: We investigate the localized surface modes in a structure consisting of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer, a phase plate, and a metal layer. These modes are analogous to the optical Tamm states. The nonreciprocal transmission of polarized light propagating in the forward and backward directions is established. It is demonstrated that the transmission spectrum can be controlled by external fields acting on the cholesteric liquid crystal and by varying the plane of polarization of the incident light.

Аннотация: A memory effect has been discovered in composite films based on a polymer containing dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal, which is related to the modification of the surface anchoring by an ionic surfactant under the action of an applied electric field. Parameters of electric signals are selected that ensure the switching of the composite film between some stable states with different levels of optical transmittance.
