Аннотация: Formation and properties of the iron oxides γ -Fe2O3 and ϵ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles arising in glasses of basic compositions Ge2O-K2O-Al2O3-B2O3 and K2O-Al2O3-B2O3 doped with different concentrations of Fe2O3 and Gd2O3 and subjected to the additional thermal treatment are studied. The X-ray diffraction, TEM microscopy, magnetooptical effects, and electron spin resonance study allow elucidating the matrix and Gd role in determining the nanoparticle properties.

The structural and magnetic properties of (Fe/Si) N nanostructures obtained by successive deposition on the SiO2/Si(100) surface at a temperature of the substrate of 300 K have been studied. The thicknesses of all Fe and Si layers have been determined by transmission electron microscopy measurements. The magnetic properties have been studied by the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) method near the Fe L 3, 2 absorption edges. The orbital (m l ) and spin (m S ) contributions to the total magnetic moment of iron have been separated. The thicknesses of magnetic and nonmagnetic iron silicide on the Si/Fe and Fe/Si interfaces have been determined with the surface sensitivity of the XMCD method and the model of the interface between the nonmagnetic and weakened magnetic phases.

Аннотация: Magnetic control of the crystal chirality was announced by Saito et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, (2008)] on the ground of experiments in CuB2O4. This claim has raised a sharp dispute in the literature because it seemed to contradict the fundamental symmetry principles. We settle this dispute on the basis of a high-resolution optical spectroscopy study of excitonic transitions in CuB2O4. We find that a large sublattice-sensitive antiferromagnetic linear dichroism (LD) emerges at the Néel temperature TN=21 K and show how it could simulate a “magnetic-field control of the crystal chirality.” We prove that the discovered LD is related microscopically to the magnetic Davydov splitting. This LD is highly sensitive to subtle changes in the spin subsystems, which allowed us to observe a splitting of the phase transition into an incommensurate magnetic phase into two transitions (T∗1=8.5 and T∗2=7.9 K) and to suggest elliptical spiral structures below T∗1, instead of a simple circular helix proposed earlier.
О магнитном контроле кристаллической хиральности сообщил Сайто и др. [Phys. Rev. Lett.

The recent results of the studies of magnetic materials using synchrotron irradiation are reviewed. The influence of magnetic effects on X-ray scattering is studied for linearly and circularly polarized photons, and effects of magnetic circular dichroism on the spectra of X-ray absorption and photoelectron emission are discussed. It is shown that X-ray magnetooptics techniques provide fine details of crystal and magnetic structures and also make it possible to separate the spin and orbital contributions to the total moment; to obtain element- and position-sensitive information on the magnetic properties of the material; to visualize domains and domain walls; and to probe magnetization reversal dynamics. A comparison of magnetic neutron and X-ray methods is given.

silicene -- germanene -- 2D ferromagnetism -- X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) -- monolayer
Аннотация: Two-dimension (2D) magnets have recently developed into a class of stoichiometric materials with prospective applications in ultra-compact spintronics and quantum computing. Their functionality is particularly rich when different magnetic orders are competing in the same material. Metalloxenes REX2 (RE = Eu, Gd; X = Si, Ge), silicene or germanene — heavy counterparts of graphene — coupled with a layer of rare-earth metals, evolve from three-dimension (3D) antiferromagnets in multilayer structures to 2D ferromagnets in a few monolayers. This evolution, however, does not lead to fully saturated 2D ferromagnetism, pointing at a possibility of coexisting/competing magnetic states. Here, REX2 magnetism is explored with element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The measurements are carried out for GdSi2, EuSi2, GdGe2, and EuGe2 of different thicknesses down to 1 monolayer employing K absorption edges of Si and Ge as well as M and L edges of the rare-earths. They access the magnetic state in REX2 and determine the seat of magnetism, orbital, and spin contributions to the magnetic moment. High-field measurements probe remnants of the bulk antiferromagnetism in 2D REX2. The results provide a new platform for studies of complex magnetic structures in 2D materials.

Thin films -- Manganites -- Crystal structure -- Electrical transport -- Electronic properties -- Magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: The features of electronic structure of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3, and Pr0.6Sr0.4MnO3 polycrystalline films of different thickness have been investigated using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the range of 1.1–4.2 eV. The temperature behavior of the samples electrical resistance were also has been studied. It was found that films with high Sr content (0.3 and 0.4) act as high-temperature semiconductors, while the maximum in the temperature dependences of resistivity these films indicates the transition of the samples to the metallic state at some temperature TM-S, which is different for different sample thickness. The films with the lower Sr content (0.2) act as insulators in the used temperature range. The MCD spectra have been decomposed to the Gaussian-shaped lines, and the temperature dependence of intensity of each line has been analyzed in comparison with temperature dependence of the films magnetization and with their electric conductivity type. Different temperature behavior of the intensity of four specified Gaussian-lines was revealed for semiconductor films. In the case of insulating Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3 samples, the intensity of three specified Gaussian lines changes with the temperature in the same way as the magnetization changed. It was established that the lanthanide (La, Pr) type does not affect the MCD spectra shape for the films with the same electrical conductivity type. Besides, the correlation between the MCD data of the films and their conductivity type was revealed. Due to the detailed analysis of the specified Gaussian lines with taking into account the well-known in the literature absorption bands, lying outside the studied spectral region, the MCD bands for the studied manganite films have been identified with electronic transitions of a different nature.

Iron oxides -- ε-Fe2O3 -- Borate glasses -- Nanoparticles -- Magnetic circular dichroism -- Electron magnetic resonance
Аннотация: A remarkable characteristic of borate glasses is the ability of forming magnetic nanoparticles at low doping with transition element oxides. We have studied structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles formed in borate glasses, in particular, concentration and temperature dependences of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectra. A series of glasses of molar composition 22.5K2O-22.5Al2O3–55B2O3 doped with 1.5 mass % of Fe2O3 and different contents of Gd2O3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mass % was prepared using a conventional melt quenching technique and subjected to an additional thermal treatment. The whole set of results allows to identify the predominant magnetic phase in these glasses as ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, with a considerable part of iron ions substituted by gadolinium. Analysis and computer simulations of the EMR spectra allow separating the contribution of electron paramagnetic resonance of diluted iron ions and together with the temperature dependences of magnetization demonstrate a superparamagnetic character of the nanoparticle magnetism.

Copper selenide -- Magnetic nanoparticles -- Visible magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: Cu1-xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles with x = 0, 0.2, and 0.4 were synthesized via thermal decomposition of metal nitrate or chloride salts and selenium powder using different precursor compositions and processing details. Single crystalline nano-belts or nano-rods coexist in the synthesized powder samples with hexagon-shaped plates in dependence on the precursor composition. The belts gathered into conglomerates forming "hierarchical" particles. Visible magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of Cu1-xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles embedded into a transparent matrix was investigated for the first time. The similarity of the MCD spectra of all samples showed the similarity of the nanoparticles electronic structure independent of their morphology. Basing on the MCD spectral maxima characteristics, electron transitions from the ground to the excited states were identified with the help of the conventional band theory and the multi-electron approach. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

The spectral dependences point to a mixed valence state of Mn and Pr in the films. It is found that, as compared to XANES, XMCD is more sensitive to the valence state of Pr4+. The field dependences of XMCD point to ferromagnetic behavior of Mn ions and the Van Vleck paramagnetism of Pr ions, which makes a significant contribution to the total magnetization of the films. It is shown that as the Sr concentration increases, the XMCD intensity at the K edge of Mn increases, which indicates a growth of the total magnetic moment of the film due to an increase in the 4p–3d hybridization.

Аннотация: We present a study of a Ho0.5Nd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 single crystal aiming at understanding the roles of each magnetic sublattices in magnetic transitions at low temperatures. The crystal structure is determined to have the R32 symmetry in whole studied temperature range but the crystal appears to be racemic. Element selective magnetic properties studied with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the L2,3-edges of Ho and Nd, and at the Fe K-edge at T = 3 K under magnetic fields of ±17 T are compared with the results of macroscopic magnetization measurements in pure and substituted crystals. All three magnetic sublattices are shown to be strongly coupled and to undergo a spin-reorientation transition when magnetic field is applied along the trigonal c-axis. On the contrary, when magnetic field is applied in the ab-plane only the holmium atoms exhibit a sizeable magnetization jump. This result allows us to conclude that the spin-flop transitions observed in macroscopic magnetization curves and associated anomalies of electric polarization are due to the Ho3+ magnetic moment reorientation.

Аннотация: Hematite, α-Fe2O3, one of the most widely studied magnetic compounds known to mankind since ancient times, has amazing properties and continues to puzzle researchers to this day. In this work, we found exceptionally strong changes in the morphology and magnetic properties of hematite nanoparticles upon doping with rather low concentrations of chromium. Nanoparticles α-Fe2−xCrxO3 with x varied from zero to 0.15 were prepared by solvothermal method using FeCl3·6H2O, CrCl3·6H2O, and 1,2-diaminopropane, (CH2)3(NH2)2, as precursors and temperature 180 °C for 6 h. The X-ray diffraction data showed the presence of only one crystal phase α-Fe2O3 for all x meanings with growing average crystalline size as the x increases. For the parent α-Fe2O3 powdered samples, the transmission electron microscopy revealed very long narrow nanorods with rounded ends that transform into spindles of increasing volume and cross section diameter as the Cr concentration increases. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study of the nanoparticles behavior in dependences on temperature and magnetic field revealed many unusual peculiarities. Among them there are strong increase of NPs magnetization with x increase (usually opposite picture is observed), the Morin transition temperature TM dependence on magnetic field, VSM sees the Morin transition in samples with small x only while MCD – in all samples, magnetization field dependences also are different when measured with VSM and MCD, and so on. Qualitative considerations were proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

Аннотация: The exchange bias (EB) effect, which is the shift of the hysteresis loop of a ferromagnet in direct contact with an antiferromagnet, is highly advantageous for the development of spintronics applications. Carbon (C) has been considered as a potential material in next generation electronics production as well as spintronics devices beyond silicon. Here we show experimental evidence for an EB in C/Co composites. The significant EB needs thermal annealing to occur. X-ray absorption spectra and transmission electron microscopy data of these samples reveal that Co carbides in as grown samples decompose and form graphitic C/Co interfaces after annealing. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism we have detected the C spins that are responsible for the EB. These results inspire a theoretical model to investigate the magnetic interactions in graphitic C/Co interfaces and interpret the observed results. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: Iron oxide magnetite (Fe3O4) should be a reasonable analog for conception and understanding of the magnetic properties of iron sulfide greigite (Fe3S4)—one of the most required magnetic materials having numerous applications but being far from the complete understanding now. We present here a comparative study of the Mössbauer effect (ME) and the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy of Fe3O4 and Fe3S4 nanoparticles. The ME spectrum parameters of Fe3S4 are shown to distinguish strongly from that of Fe3O4, and the MCD spectrum shapes are shown to be absolutely different for two compounds. To clarify the origin of the Fe3S4 MCD spectrum we have performed ab initio band structure calculations and identified the MCD spectrum features with the transitions between calculated energy states.

ZnO films -- Co-doped ZnO films -- Films hydrogenation -- Magnetic circular -- dichroism -- Room temperature ferromagnetism
Аннотация: ZnO and Co-doped ZnO films were synthesized by the radio frequency magnetron sputtering in mixed atmosphere of Ar + 20% O2 and Ar + 20–50% H2. The morphology, chemical composition, crystal structure, optical transmission, electrical resistance, and magnetic circular dichroism of the films were investigated. It was established that the films thickness decreased several times when Ar was partly replaced by hydrogen in the sputtering chamber. At the same time, for the Co-doped ZnO films, the increase in the relative Co content with the increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. These phenomena are explained by the formation of gaseous ZnH2 because of the hydrogen reaction with the growing films under the conditions of the high substrate temperature (450 °C) and, respectively, the decrease in the Zn component in the films. The hydrogenated Co-doped ZnO films exhibit an increase in electric conductivity and ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. The magnetic nature of the films is explained by a combination of the intrinsic ferromagnetism (due to the formation of the Co-H-Co complex) with the inclusion of metallic Co clusters.

Аннотация: The giant natural optical activity of vibronic replicas of the f–f5/8 → 5F2 transition in HoAl3(BO3)4 is observed. It exceeds the optical activity related to purely electronic transitions by two orders of magnitude and corresponds to the almost complete circular polarization of the transitions. This effect is explained by the local distortions of the crystal in the excited electronic state, which lead to the mixing of electron and vibrational wavefunctions and, as a consequence, to the delocalization of the vibronic wavefunction and the enhancement of spatial dispersion, which is responsible for the optical activity.

Аннотация: Magnetochiral dichroism (MΧD) originates in the coupling of local electric fields and magnetic moments in systems where a simultaneous break of space parity and time-reversal symmetries occurs. This magnetoelectric coupling, displayed by chiral magnetic materials, can be exploited to manipulate the magnetic moment of molecular materials at the single molecule level. We demonstrate herein the first experimental observation of X-ray magnetochiral dichroism in enantiopure chiral trigonal single crystals of a chiral mononuclear paramagnetic lanthanide coordination complex, namely, holmium oxydiacetate, at the Ho L3-edge. The observed magnetochiral effect is opposite for the two enantiomers and is rationalised on the basis of a multipolar expansion of the matter–radiation interaction. These results demonstrate that 4f–5d hybridization in chiral lanthanoid coordination complexes is at the origin of magnetochiral dichroism, an effect that could be exploited for addressing of their magnetic moment at the single molecule level.

Magnetic nanoparticles -- ε-Fe2O3 -- Magnetic circular dichroism -- Electron magnetic resonance
Аннотация: A new type of magnetic nanoparticles was revealed in borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and gadolinium. Structure and magnetic properties of the particles differ essentially from that of the α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, or Fe3O4 nanoparticles which were detected earlier in similar glass matrices. Transmission electron microscopy including STEM-HAADF and EDX, synchrotron radiation-based XRD, static magnetic measurements, magnetic circular dichroism, and electron magnetic resonance studies allow referring the nanoparticles to the iron oxide phase-ε-Fe2O3. Analysis of the data set has shown that it is Gd atoms that govern the process of nanoparticles' nucleation and its incorporation into the particles in different proportions can be used to adjust their magnetic and magneto-optical characteristics. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
