Аннотация: Single crystals of ludwigite Cu2MnBO5 were synthesized by flux growth technique. The detailed structural and magnetic characterizations of the synthesized samples have been carried out. The cations composition of the studied crystal was determined using X-ray diffraction and EXAFS technique, the resulting composition differ from the content of the initial Mn2O3–CuO components of the flux. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and the calculations of the exchange integrals in frameworks of indirect coupling model revealed that monoclinic distortions strongly affect exchange interactions and appearance of magnetic ordering phase at the temperature T=93 K. The hypothesis of the existence of several magnetic subsystems was supposed. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: We present the results of studies of thermal expansion, heat capacity, permittivity, polarization and the influence of different thermal conditions on the intensive electrocaloric effect (ECE), ΔTAD, in a commercial multilayer capacitor based on doped BaTiO3. Investigations in a wide temperature range revealed one anomaly in the behavior of the physical properties at about 290K characteristic for the relaxors. Direct measurements showed a high reversibility of ECE under equilibrium thermal conditions. Good agreement was found between the values of ΔTAD determined by direct and indirect measurements at the electric field up to 15.4 kV/cm. Quasi-isothermal conditions lead, firstly, to decrease of large ΔTAD ≈0.94K obtained in adiabatic conditions under E = 308 kV/cm to 0.87 K, and, secondly, the appearance of a difference between the values of ΔTON and ΔTOFF determined when the electric field is applied and removed. Using this phenomenon and changing the frequency of the periodic electric field, E = 15.4 kV/cm, the effect of cooling was obtained equal to [(ΔTON + ΔT OFF)/2]max = -0,032 K. The results obtained are useful for further development of the electrocaloric refrigeration technique without thermal switches.

Аннотация: Orthorhombic Me3B2O6 (Me = Co, Ni) single crystals of the kotoite family are grown from the fluxes based on a mixture of bismuth trimolybdate and sodium oxide upon spontaneous nucleation. The field and temperature dependences of magnetization of the single crystals with the magnetic field oriented along the principal crystallographic directions are obtained. Unlike Ni3B2O6, Co3B2O6 exhibits strong anisotropy of the magnetic properties. At the temperature T = 10 K, the magnetization curves of Co3B2O6 reveal an anomaly attributed to the spin-reorientation transition. Strong anisotropy of the magnetic properties of Co3B2O6 is also confirmed by the calculation of the exchange interactions within a simple indirect coupling model.

Аннотация: Raman spectra of Ho1-xNdxFe(BO3)4 (x=1, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25) have been studied in temperature range 10-400K. Two compositions (x=1, x=0.75) demonstrate structural phase transition with soft mode restoration. The addition of Nd atoms increases interatomic spacing and decreases the temperature of structural phase transition. The solid solutions (x=0.75, 0.5, 0.25) demonstrate the emergence of the peaks corresponding to magnetoelastic interaction below Neel temperature. The order parameter of the magnetic phase transition has been determined. The equal concentrations of holmium and neodymium atoms prevent magnon soft modes condensation caused by exchange interactions in Fe-O-Fe chains are observed. Calculations confirm the data obtained in the experiment.

Аннотация: A comparative analysis of the copper and iron ions bonds exchange energies was conducted for various variants of orderings and distributions of iron ions among crystallographic positions in ludwigite Cu2FeBO5. Analysis showed that the exchange bonds of iron ions play a key role in the formation of magnetic order. The magnetic ordering strongly depends on the distribution of iron ions among the positions. In the case when the Fe3+ is in the same position as in Fe3BO5, the most favorable magnetic structure is similar to the magnetic structure of ludwigite Fe3BO5. In other cases, the type of magnetic ordering is different.
