Аннотация: Formation and properties of the iron oxides γ -Fe2O3 and ϵ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles arising in glasses of basic compositions Ge2O-K2O-Al2O3-B2O3 and K2O-Al2O3-B2O3 doped with different concentrations of Fe2O3 and Gd2O3 and subjected to the additional thermal treatment are studied. The X-ray diffraction, TEM microscopy, magnetooptical effects, and electron spin resonance study allow elucidating the matrix and Gd role in determining the nanoparticle properties.
Изучены свойства наночастиц γ-Fe2O3 и ϵ-Fe2O3, формирующихся в стеклах основного состава Ge2O-K2O-Al2O3-B2O3 и K2O-Al2O3-B2O3, допированных Fe2O3 и Gd2O3 и подвергнутых дополни- тельной термической обработке. Результаты исследования рентгеновской дифракции, электрон- ной микроскопии, магнитооптических эффектов и электронного спинового резонанса позволили объяснить роль матрицы и гадолиния в определении свойств наночастиц.

Аннотация: A remarkable characteristic of borate glasses is the ability of forming magnetic nanoparticles at low doping with transition element oxides. We have studied structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles formed in borate glasses, in particular, concentration and temperature dependences of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectra. A series of glasses of molar composition 22.5K2O-22.5Al2O3–55B2O3 doped with 1.5 mass % of Fe2O3 and different contents of Gd2O3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mass % was prepared using a conventional melt quenching technique and subjected to an additional thermal treatment. The whole set of results allows to identify the predominant magnetic phase in these glasses as ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, with a considerable part of iron ions substituted by gadolinium. Analysis and computer simulations of the EMR spectra allow separating the contribution of electron paramagnetic resonance of diluted iron ions and together with the temperature dependences of magnetization demonstrate a superparamagnetic character of the nanoparticle magnetism.

Аннотация: A coordinated investigation of the magnetic and electrical properties of polycrystalline cobalt oxide compounds CdCoO3, Gd0.9Ba0.1CoO3, and Gd0.9Sr0.1CoO3 is carried out. Undoped GdCoO3 reveals a low conductivity; a magnetic moment of 7.4 mu(B) per molecule, which is less than the theoretical value for the Gd3+ ion; and an asymptotic Curie temperature of -6 K. Doping GdCoO3 with barium and strontium to substitution of 10 at. % Gd brings about an increase in the conductivity and magnetic transitions at T = 300 K for Gd0.9Ba0.1CoO3 and T = 170 K for Gd0.9Sr0.1CoO3. The magnetization anomalies imply the formation of magnetic clusters. The behavior of the electrical conductivity at high temperatures suggests a variable activation energy. At low temperatures, Mott hopping conduction sets in.

Аннотация: A multicomponent glass system 20La2O3–22Al2O3–23B23–35(SiO2+ GeO2) in which part of La2O3is substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations has been studied by EPR. The EPR spectra show the presence of clustering at higher Gd contents. At low temperatures, the cluster-related resonance signal is altered in shape, indicating the appearance of a magnetic anisotropy field.

Аннотация: Structural, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of borate glasses co-doped with Fe and the lager radius ions are presented. Maghemite, ?-Fe2O3, nanoparticles arise in the glasses as a result of their thermal treatment in different regimes. Magnetization FC and ZFC temperature dependences demonstrate the superparamagnetic behavior of the particles with the blocking temperature below the room temperature. The EMR spectra measurements revealed a significant anisotropy with a large contribution of the nanoparticles' surface anisotropy. The FR maximum centered near 700 nm is a characteristic feature of the investigated glasses. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Аннотация: The influence of quasilocal vibrations on the far-infrared spectra of glasses is investigated under the supposition that the quasilocal vibrations are directly inactive in the attenuation. It is shown that taking into account phonon-quasilocal-vibration coupling and both medium- and short-range structure of the inhomogeneities of a photon-phonon coupling parameter can give rise to an attenuation curve similar to one observed for a-SiO2 and related materials.

Аннотация: Evolution of the phase state of paramagnetic additions at various stages of synthesis and subsequent thermal treatment of glasses of the system Al(2)O(3)-K(2)O-B(2)O(3) simultaneously doped with Fe(2)O(3) and MnO is studied by means of a combination of experimental techniques: Faraday rotation (FR), electron magnetic resonance (EMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Both FR and EMR show that magnetically ordered clusters occur already at the first stage of the glass preparation. In particular, for the ratio of the Fe and Mn oxides in the charge close to 3:2, fine magnetic nanoparticles are formed with characteristics similar to those of manganese ferrite. By computer simulating the EMR spectra at variable temperatures, a superparamagnetic nature of these nanoparticles is confirmed and their mean diameter is estimated as approximately 3.2 nm. In the thermally treated glasses larger magnetic nanoparticles are formed, giving rise to FR spectra, characteristic of magnetically ordered systems, and the EMR spectra different from those in as-prepared glasses but also showing superparamagnetic narrowing. The Mossbauer spectroscopy corroborates the manganese ferrite structure of the nanoparticles and indicates their coexistence in the ferrimagnetic and superparamagnetic states. The TEM shows the presence of polydisperse nanoparticles on the background of the glass matrix, and electron diffraction of a selected region containing larger particles indicates a crystal structure close to that of MnFe(2)O(4). Energy-dispersive atomic x-ray spectra confirm that the major part of Fe and Mn introduced to the glass composition is gathered in the particles, with the concentration ratio close to 2:1, characteristic of bulk MnFe(2)O(4). Magnetic hysteresis loops of samples subjected to an additional thermal treatment demonstrate a strong increase in the coercive force, remnant magnetization, and high-field magnetic susceptibility with temperature decrease. The consistent results obtained using various techniques demonstrate that the formation of nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of MnFe(2)O(4) confers to these glasses magnetic and magneto-optical properties typical of substances possessing magnetic order.

Аннотация: A new type of nanocomposite materials based on maghemite, γ-Fe2O3, nanoparticles dispersed in borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron together with the larger radius element combinations: Y and Bi, or Sm and Pb, or Y and Pb is studied. Nanoparticles arise as a result of heat treatment of the glasses which gives them properties characteristic of magnetically ordered substances. Transmission electron microscopy and XRD show that only one magnetic phase, namely γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, occurs in glasses subjected to the thermal treatment at 540 °C during 24 h independently on the doping element nature. At the same time doping element and their concentrations ratio in every combination affect the particles average size and glass magnetic properties, such as magnetization temperature dependences, Faraday rotation value and electron magnetic resonance spectrum characteristics.

Аннотация: The thermal properties of nanocomposites obtained by incorporating a ferroelectric (NH4)2SO4 (AS) into porous glasses (PG) was studied for the first time. X-ray diffraction studies showed a strong increase in the ratio of the size of nanocrystallites grown in glass matrices to pore size, dcryst/ dpore = 0.47→1.50→5.00, with a decrease in dpore = 320→46→7 nm. Calorimetric and dilatometric measurements showed a change from a first-order phase transition in AS single crystal to a second-order transformation in AS nanocrystallites. A restricted geometry also led to a significant decrease in the anomalous entropy in AS+PG samples compared to AS (J/mol∙K): 17.7 (AS)→12.4 (AS+PG320)→10.4 (AS+PG46)→8.1 (AS+PG7). A discussion of the nontrivial behavior of the phase transition temperature in embedded AS was carried out using the degree of PG filling, the ratio dcryst/dpore, texture, and the volumetric and linear baric coefficients for the bulk AS.

Аннотация: Evolution of the magnetic nanoparticles characteristics in glasses of the system 22.5 Al2O3 - 22.5 K2O - 55 B2O3 co-doped with Fe2O3 and MnO simultaneous is studied at different stages of the post-synthesis heat treatment with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), and magneto-optical Faraday rotation (FR). Heat treatment of the glasses results in substantial changes of their structure and properties: ferrite nanoparticles of different size, composition, and structure arise in glass matrices. For several series of glasses with the same composition and molar concentration of the paramagnetic additions, the heat treatment regimes (temperature and duration) have been shown to be the main factors controlling the particle size and the order in the crystallite arrangements. Ensembles of particles in theirs turn determine magnetic and magneto-optical properties of glass as a whole. A correlation between the characteristics of nanoparticles and the heat treatment regimes is discussed qualitatively.

Аннотация: A new type of magnetic nanoparticles was revealed in borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and gadolinium. Structure and magnetic properties of the particles differ essentially from that of the α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, or Fe3O4 nanoparticles which were detected earlier in similar glass matrices. Transmission electron microscopy including STEM-HAADF and EDX, synchrotron radiation-based XRD, static magnetic measurements, magnetic circular dichroism, and electron magnetic resonance studies allow referring the nanoparticles to the iron oxide phase-ε-Fe2O3. Analysis of the data set has shown that it is Gd atoms that govern the process of nanoparticles' nucleation and its incorporation into the particles in different proportions can be used to adjust their magnetic and magneto-optical characteristics. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: The absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of f-f transitions (6)H(15/2) -> (6)F(3/2), (6)F(5/2), (6)(F(7/2) + H(5/2)) and (6)(F(9/2) + H(7/2)) in Dy(3+) ion were studied in the glasses: Dy(2)O(3)-P(2)O(5)-SiO(2)-GeO(2) and Dy(2)O(3)-La(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3)-B(2)O(3)-SiO(2)-GeO(2) with different concentrations of Dy(3+) ions in temperature range 100-300 K. :Basing on this data, absolute values and temperature dependences of the paramagnetic magneto-optical activity (MOA) of the transitions were determined. The origin of the MOA of f-f transitions was analyzed with the help of two models. In the first model, MOA is considered as a consequence of admixture of states with opposite parity by odd components of crystal field. The second approach is based on the Judd-Ofelt theory. The same f-f transitions reveal different values and temperature dependences in different glasses, what testifies to a different symmetry of the nearest environment of Dy(3+) ions in these glasses.

Аннотация: The absorption spectra of Pr3+ and Dy3+ ions in three glass matrices (SiO2-P2O5-GeO2, Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2, and LiB3O5) are thoroughly studied in the near-IR spectral range (4600-14 300 cm(-1)). The temperature dependences of the intensity, the width, and the location of the absorption bands observed are investigated for the first time. It is shown that the f-f transitions in the studied glasses ate allowed by static odd distortions in the environment of the rare-earth ions and these distortions decrease with an increase in temperature. A comparative analysis of the absorption band parameters and their temperature behavior in different materials makes it possible to determine the differences in magnitudes, symmetries, and dispersions of the distortions in the nearest environment of rare-earth ions in different glasses.
