Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum of a multilayer photonic crystal with a central liquid-crystal defect layer placed between crossed polarizers has been studied. Transmittance was varied due to the magnetically induced reorientation of the nematic director from homeotropic to planar alignment. Two notable effects were observed for this scheme: the spectral shift of defect modes corresponding to the extraordinary light wave and its superposition with the ordinary one. As a result, the optical cell allows controlling the intensity of interfering defect modes by applied magnetic field. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal -- orientational structure -- electric field-induced transformation -- topological defect -- metastable state
Аннотация: Orientational structures of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal under homeotropic anchoring and their transformations under the action of an electric field are studied. The switching of cholesteric droplets between different topological states are experimentally and theoretically demonstrated. Structures with λ+1/2-disclination are found and considered. These structures are formed during the transformation of a twisted toroidal configuration induced by a decrease in the electric field when a relative chiral parameter N0>6.3. The transformation of the initial structure with a bipolar distribution of the helix axis into a twisted toroidal configuration and then into a structure with λ+1/2-disclination is investigated in detail. The behavior of these structures under the influence of an external electric field, as well as the appearance of structures with λ−1/2-disclination, are studied. Obtained results are promising for the development of optical materials with programmable properties.

Аннотация: Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral nematics with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.

Cholesteric droplet -- Orientational structure -- Topological defect -- Electric field -- Structure relaxation
Аннотация: Cholesteric droplets under homeotropic boundary conditions demonstrate a rich variety of possible orientational structures. We have implemented electrically controlled switching of such droplets between two classes of stable states: i) structures with cylindrical cholesteric layers and ii) layer-like structures with one or more λ+1/2-disclinations. Structure relaxation after switching off the voltage proceeded via the fast (less than 1 s), the slow (more than 1 s), and the stabilization stages (~10 hours). We investigated intermediate long-lived metastable states occurring in the relaxation process and explained the formation of various structures in cholesteric droplets. The fast and the slow stages of relaxation were found to be sensitive to the voltage reduction regime. We have determined the combinations of droplet size and voltage reduction regimes leading to the two types of structures after relaxation.

Аннотация: Inverse mode of a novel electrooptical effect caused by the ionic modification of boundary conditions has been studied for liquid crystal droplets. We have considered the droplets of nematic 5CB doped with cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol. In the initial state the surface anchoring was normal on the whole interface due to the high concentration of homeotropic surfactant. Applied voltage results in the purification of a section of the interface from the surface-active cations thereby restoring here a tangential anchoring and stimulating the significant transformation of droplet structure. At that three different types of director field distribution can be realized within the same droplet. The proper textures of the droplet both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer are considered.

The transformation of the orientational structure induced by the electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring in the nematic layer with homeotropic-conical boundary conditions has been considered. It has been found that the change in the azimuthal angle of director at the substrate with conical anchoring can be realized by modification of boundary conditions at the second substrate.

Аннотация: The dependency of orientational structures in cholesteric droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring on the helicity parameter has been studied by experiment and simulations. We have observed a sequence of structures, in which the director configurations and topological defects were identified by comparison of polarized microscopy pictures with simulated textures. A toron-like and low-symmetry intermediate layer-like structures have been revealed and studied in detail. The ranges of stability of the observed structures have been summarized in a general diagram and explained by the helicity parameter dependence of the free energy terms.
