Аннотация: Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral nematics with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.

Аннотация: Inverse mode of a novel electrooptical effect caused by the ionic modification of boundary conditions has been studied for liquid crystal droplets. We have considered the droplets of nematic 5CB doped with cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol. In the initial state the surface anchoring was normal on the whole interface due to the high concentration of homeotropic surfactant. Applied voltage results in the purification of a section of the interface from the surface-active cations thereby restoring here a tangential anchoring and stimulating the significant transformation of droplet structure. At that three different types of director field distribution can be realized within the same droplet. The proper textures of the droplet both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer are considered.

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum of a multilayer photonic crystal with a central liquid-crystal defect layer placed between crossed polarizers has been studied. Transmittance was varied due to the magnetically induced reorientation of the nematic director from homeotropic to planar alignment. Two notable effects were observed for this scheme: the spectral shift of defect modes corresponding to the extraordinary light wave and its superposition with the ordinary one. As a result, the optical cell allows controlling the intensity of interfering defect modes by applied magnetic field. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We report on the spectral properties of an optically switchable tristable chiral-tilted homeotropic nematic liquid crystal (LC) incorporated as a tunable defect layer in one-dimensional photonic crystal. By varying the polarization angle of the incident light and modulating the light intensity ratio between UV and green light, various transmission characteristics of the composite were obtained. The hybrid structure realizes photo-tunability in transmission of defect-mode peaks within the photonic bandgap in addition to optical switchability among three distinct sets of defect modes via photoinduced tristable state transitions. Because the fabrication process is easier and less critical in terms of cell parameters or sample preparation conditions and the LC layer itself possesses an extra stable state compared with the previously reported bistable counterpart operating on the basis of biased-voltage dual-frequency switching, it has much superior potential for photonic applications such as a low-power-consumption multichannel filter and an optically controllable intensity modulator. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: Cholesteric droplets dispersed in a polymer with homeotropic surface anchoring are studied. A director configuration with the bipolar distribution of the axis of the helix is formed in droplets. The untwisting of the helical structure (i.e., an increase in the pitch of the helix) is experimentally observed at a decrease in the size of droplets. This dependence is analyzed for liquid crystal droplets with various concentrations of the chiral addition. A proposed empirical relation describes well the correlation of the helix pitch and the size of droplets in the studied samples.

Аннотация: The reorientation of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a large helical pitch induced by the electric field–driven modification of surface anchoring is investigated. In the initial state, the liquid crystal cell has a homeotropic alignment of the director. Аннотация: Optical textures and appropriate orientational structures have been studied within droplets of chiral nematic dispersed in polymer assigning the homeotropic anchoring. The helix axis of the chiral structure inside droplets forms the bipolar configuration. The optical droplet textures were analysed in the unpolarised light, analyser switching-off scheme and in crossed polarisers. The twisted loop defect reveals itself convincingly in all schemes. Its appearance at the optical patterns of the chiral nematic droplets has been examined depending on their size and the aspect direction. The existence of the defect has been verified by the structural and optical calculations. The effect of an electric field on both the defect line shape and the orientational structure of chiral nematic has been studied.
