Аннотация: Optical absorption spectra of YbAl3(BO3)4, TmAl3(BO3)4 and TbFe3(BO3)4 trigonal crystals have been studied in temperature range 2–300 K. Temperature behavior of absorption lines parameters has shown, that during some f-f transitions the local environment of rare earth ions undergo distortions, which are absent in the ground state.Оптические спектры поглощения YbAl3(BO3)4, TmAl3(BO3)4 и TbFe3(BO3)4 треугольные кристаллы были изученны в диапазоне температуры 2–300 K. Температурное поведение параметров линий поглощения показало, что во время некоторых f–f переходов, окружение редких земных ионов подвергается искажениям, которые отсутствуют в обычном состоянии.

Аннотация: The Judd–Ofelt theory has been applied to analyze absorption spectra of Ho3+ ion in HoAl3(BO3)4 measured in spectral range 300–700 nm at room temperature. The Judd–Ofelt spectroscopic parameters have been determined as: Ω2 = 18.87 x 10 -20 cm2, Ω4 = 17.04 x 10 -20 cm2, Ω6 = 9.21 x 10 -20 cm2. These parameters have been used to calculate radiative lifetimes and branching ratios of the luminescence manifolds. Three luminescent bands were found in the spectral range 450–700 nm ascribed to transitions from the 5F5, (5F4, 5S2) and 3K8 states to the ground state 5I8. Experimental intensities of these luminescence transitions were compared with those calculated by using Judd–Ofelt theory and the system of kinetic equations for populations of starting luminescing states. Probabilities of radiativeless transitions were evaluated from this comparison.

Аннотация: With the help of group theory analysis of absorption spectra of the transition H-3(6) - F-3(3) of Tm3+ ion in TmAl3(BO3)(4) crystal, measured at several temperatures from 1.8 till 293 K, it has been shown, that the local symmetry of the Tm3+ environment is C-3 and it decreases to C-1 at a low temperature. Effective selection rules and polarizations of lines at high enough temperatures (when the line-width is larger than the splitting in C-3 symmetry) have been obtained. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Аннотация: Single crystals of yttrium aluminum borate YAl3 (BO3)(4) doped with manganese ions are studied using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is shown that manganese ions introduced at low concentrations into the sample predominantly occupy yttrium ion sites in the crystal structure. The shape of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum unambiguously indicates that the valence of manganese ions in this case is equal to 2+. The parameters of the spin Hamiltonian of Mn2+, ions in the YAl3(BO3)(4) matrix are determined at room temperature. The magnitude and sign of the fine structure parameter D allow the conclusion that the YAl3(BO3)(4) single crystals doped with manganese ions have a strong crystal field at the yttrium ion sites and L easy-axis anisotropy.

Аннотация: The polarized spectra of absorption and magnetic circular dichroism in a TmAl3(BO3)(4) single crystal are studied in the re-ion of H-3(6) - F-3(4), H-3(6) - F-3(3),and H-3(3) - F-3(2) electronic transitions in e Tm3+ ion. The structure of the spectra is interpreted qualitatively. It is shown that the magnetic circular dichroism of the H-3(6) - F-3(4) transition is determined by the contribution from the splitting of the ground state, whereas the magnetic circular dichroism of the H-3(6) - F-3(3) transition is governed by the contribution from the splitting of an excited state in a trigonal crystal field.

Аннотация: Multiferroic materials showing the coexistence of at least two ferroic orders ((anti)ferroelectric, (anti)ferromagnetic and (anti)ferroelasticity) are expected to find potential applications in many devices. Amongst these properties the coexistence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism is highly desired. Besides their coexistence, of utmost importance is a strong coupling between the two ferroic orders. In multiferroic materials, the coupling interaction between the different order parameters can produce additional functionalities. The application of multiferroics will make possible to significantly enlarge the functional possibilities of spintronics. Crystals of the RFe3(BO3)4 family (R is rare earth ion) with huntite mineral structure were reported to possess multiferroic features, demonstrating both structural and magnetic phase transitions [1 –4], where transition points may be varied by rare earth composition. In this work we used Raman spectroscopy to study Ho1–xNdxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) single crystals. Raman measurements on HoFe3(BO3) crystal were carried out at pressures up to 7 GPa and at temperatures up to 680 K by using a diamond anvil cell in order to determine the pressure–temperature phase diagram. From the changes in the Raman spectrum at the phase transition, the stability regions of phases I, II were investigated (Figure 1). After reaching 675 K and 2.5 GPa Raman spectra lines disappear and formation of a new crystalline form was discovered. This form persists ambient condition after removing high pressure and temperature.

Аннотация: Raman spectra changes in multiferroic Ho1–xNdxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and Sm1–yLayFe3(BO3)4 (y = 0, 0.75) single crystals at low temperatures have been analyzed. The anomalies corresponding to the phase transition of the second order have been detected at the temperatures of magnetic phase transitions, being consistent with previously reported results of the magnetization study. A number of anomalies in the temperature dependences of the spectral lines associated with the occurrence of magnetic order. A mode corresponding to two-magnon scattering was revealed. Comparison of the features of low-temperature low-frequency spectra of solid solutions Ho-Nd and Sm-La has been carried out.
