Аннотация: Optical modes of a multilayered photonic structure with the twisted nematic liquid crystal as a defect layer have been investigated. The electroconvective flow in the nematic makes a spatially periodic structure in the form of abnormal rolls. Non-adiabatic propagation of polarized light in the defect layer causes unique features of the optical modes corresponding to the ordinary o-waves. The decay of these modes has been demonstrated with increasing voltage due to the effect of cross-polarization diffraction loss. The modes short-wave shift resulting from the contribution of the non-adiabatic geometric phase to the total phase delay of the wave during a round-trip propagation through the photonic structure has been found both experimentally and numerically.

Аннотация: Синтезированы четвертичные аммонийные соли и органилтрифенилфосфоний галогениды, ионы которых могут оказывать ориентирующее воздействие на жидкие кристаллы. Исследована растворимость полученных соединений в нематическом жидком кристалле – 4-пентил-4'-цианобифениле (5ЦБ). Показано, что две аммонийные соли не только растворяются в нематике, но и диссоциируют на ионы. При этом анионы, перемещаясь в электрическом поле, способны модифицировать граничные условия, что открывает возможность использования данных соединений для ионно-сурфактантного метода управления жидкокристаллическими материалами.Quaternary ammonium salts and organotriphenylphosphonium halides have been synthesized. Their ions can have an orienting effect on liquid crystals. The solubility of the obtained compounds in the nematic liquid crystal - 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) has been studied. It was shown that two ammonium salts both dissolve in the nematic and also dissociate into ions. At that, the anions moving in electric field can modify the boundary conditions. This fact allows using these compounds for the ion-surfactant method of controlling liquid crystal materials.

Аннотация: The coefficient of directed transmittance of a stretched polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film with a defect-free single-domain liquid crystal droplet structure formed by a stretched surfactant-doped film and the polarization degree of forward-transmitted light in the visible and near-infrared spectrum ranges are studied. Results are presented for the 5CB, E7, and E44 nematic liquid crystals. Dependences of the transmission coefficient and polarizing ability of the film on the photodetector field of view are studied. Relationships allowing one to determine film parameters at which the transmission coefficient and polarizing ability of the films simultaneously reach values close to limit ones (0.5 and ±1.0, respectively) are obtained in the Foldy–Twersky and anomalous diffraction approximations.

Аннотация: The surface anchoring of a nematic doped with the ionic surfactant has been investigated and compared with the one in the undoped sample. The director tilt angle at the substrates coated with the orienting polymer film has been determined by the null method in a rotating magnetic field. The Frederiks transition in a magnetic field has been chosen as a convenient technique to measure the polar anchoring energy Wθ. The temperature dependences of anchoring energy have been obtained for the various nematic cells. The Wθ values for nematic doped with the ionic surfactant are less than for the undoped one. The factors affecting the measurement accuracy have been discussed. The accuracy is higher for the thinner nematic layers and weaker anchoring energy.

Аннотация: The dependency of orientational structures in cholesteric droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring on the helicity parameter has been studied by experiment and simulations. We have observed a sequence of structures, in which the director configurations and topological defects were identified by comparison of polarized microscopy pictures with simulated textures. A toron-like and low-symmetry intermediate layer-like structures have been revealed and studied in detail. The ranges of stability of the observed structures have been summarized in a general diagram and explained by the helicity parameter dependence of the free energy terms.

Аннотация: Orientational structures formed in nematic and cholesteric layers with tangential-conical boundary conditions have been investigated. LC cells with one substrate specifying the conical surface anchoring and another substrate specifying the tangential one have been considered. The director configurations and topological defects have been identified analyzing the texture patterns obtained by polarizing microscope in comparison with the structures and optical textures calculated by free energy minimization procedure of director field and finite-difference time-domain method, respectively. The domains, periodic structures and two-dimensional defects proper to the LC cells with tangential-conical anchoring have been studied depending on the layer thickness and cholesteric pitch.

Аннотация: Dynamical systems and defects in liquid crystals (LCs) are described using topological methods. Meanwhile, the director field distribution in LC droplets is affected by many bulk and surface factors that are difficult to take into account in the topological analysis. Therefore, the structural instability of a LC droplet formed in a magnetic field has been investigated by us in the framework of the catastrophe theory. The effect of temperature on the control parameters of the cusp catastrophe, which leads to the transition from a bipolar structure with extended poles to the homogeneous or radial configuration, has been estimated. It has been established from the potential curves that the transition is induced by the variation in the LC director orientation between the potential minima related to the LC polymer anchoring energy and magnetic field. The interplay of the cusp catastrophe control parameters and anchoring parameters has been elucidated.
