Температурное поведение показателей преломления nj(t) и величин
= (n|| + 2n⊥)/3, n(t) = ε1/2, ε = (ε|| + 2ε⊥)/3, εj = nj2 для световых волн с поляризацией вдоль (j = ||) и нормально директору (j = ⊥) в дискотических нематиках ND исследовано в рамках микроскопического подхода с учетом анизотропии тензора локального поля fj(t) =1 + Lj(t)[εj(t) – 1] и тензора Лорентца Lj(t). Показано, что известные отрицательные производные
' = d
/dt, и точка te минимума на зависимости n||(t) в нематиках ND отвечают малым и средним значениям двупреломления Δn = n|| – n⊥. Для ЖК с высокими величинами Δn и компонентами L⊥, меньшими порогового значения Δn(to), предсказаны два новых эффекта: положительные значения
',n', и наличие точки максимума to на зависимости n⊥(t). Установлена связь to с величиной Δn(to) и зависимостью Δn(λ) от длины световой волны λ. Выяснены особенности перехода от объектов с точкой te к объектам с точкой to по мере роста Δn. Указаны молекулы, для которых можно ожидать наличия предсказанных эффектов. Отмечена роль этих эффектов в улучшении визуальных характеристик дисплеев с нематиком ND в граничной компенсирующей пленке.
Temperature behavior of refractive indices nj(t) and values of

ND was studied within the microscopic approach with accounting for the anisotropy of the local-field tensor fj(t) =1 + Lj(t)[εj(t) – 1] and the Lorentz tensor Lj(t). The known negative derivatives
' = d
/dt, and the point te of minimum at the dependence n||(t) for
nematics
ND were shown to correspond to small and medium values of the birefringence Δn = n|| – n⊥. For
nematics
ND with high values of Δn and components L⊥ less than the threshold value L⊥o(nj), two new effects were predicted: positive derivatives
',n' and the presence of the maximum point to at the dependence n⊥(t). The correlation of to with the magnitude of Δn(to) and the dependence Δn(λ) on the light wavelength λ was established. The features of the transition from objects with point te to objects with point to under gradual increase of Δn were cleared up. The molecules were pointed for which one could expect the presence of the predicted effects. The role of these effects in the improvement of visual characteristics of liquid crystal displays with nematic ND in the boundary compensation film was observed.

Аннотация:
A procedure is developed for a correct transition to the Bose representation for quantum SU(3) Hamiltonians. The analysis is carried out for a spin nematic by applying the indefinite metric formalism and pseudo-Hubbard operators. An important aspect of the theory is that the finiteness of the number of physical states is taken into account. This is attained by introducing and consistently taking into account the metric operator for which purpose a simple expression in terms of Bose operators is suggested. It is shown that in this approach the quantum Bose analog of the Hamiltonian is an Hermitian operator. This circumstance removes a number of principle contradictions which appeared previously on application of the Bose analog of the Hamiltonian derived by virtually identifying the Hubbard and pseudo-Hubbard operators and ignoring the finiteness of the number of physical states. The integral equations defining the chief characteristics of the system are obtained and solved analytically for the spin-nematic state of a magnet with S = 1 and by taking into account anharmonic effects. This permits one to write down in nonlinear theory explicit expressions for the two branches of the quantum excitation spectrum. The character of the renormalization of the spectrum parameters due to the presence of zero-point quantum oscillations is studied. The renormalization of the critical field on transition of the system from the spin nematic state is calculated analytically.

A temperature-induced orientational transition is investigated in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals on the surface of a cleavage of a ferroelectric triglycine sulfate crystal. The transition has been observed by the variation of the polarized absorbance components of a dye introduced into the nematic matrix with increasing temperature. The reorientation of molecules in the liquid crystal volume confined by solid walls is due to competition between dispersion and polar forces at the surface and the decrease in the electric field of the substrate up to its complete disappearance at the ferroelectric Curie point. Аннотация:
The structural and magneto- and electro-optical properties of a self-organized ensemble of nematic domains formed on a polycarbonate film in the presence of a residual solvent are studied. The film covered one of the plane-parallel glass plates of a liquid crystal cell. The magnetic field stabilizing the planar alignment of the liquid crystal was applied parallel to the cell surfaces and the reorienting electric field, perpendicular to them. The voltage dependences of the intensity of light transmitted through the domain ensemble were obtained at different constant values of the magnetic field. The comparison of the experimental dependences with the dependences calculated using the liquid crystal free-energy minimization procedure has shown good agreement between them. The mutual effect of structural elements of the ensemble and the effects of phase modulation of light are analyzed by comparing the structural, magnetic, and electric coherence lengths.

Аннотация:
Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral
nematics
with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.

The orientational transitions induced by electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring in liquid crystal cells based on the

with small or zero dielectric anisotropy Δε are considered. The type of director reorientation is shown to be independent of the sign of dielectric anisotropy and can be the same for the
nematics
with both negative and positive Δε. Besides, the orientational transition and corresponding switchable optical states do not depend on the Δε value and can be effectively realised even for the
nematics
with zero dielectric anisotropy.

It is found that the splitting of polarized electron absorption bands of impurity dye molecules is inverted with temperature in a nematic liquid-crystal matrix. This effect is caused by the statistical nature of orientation ordering of impurity molecules and by the manifestation of higher order moments of the orientation distribution function.
