Аннотация: The discovery of rare-earth free luminescent materials with blue-light-excitable characteristic is of great importance for solid-sate lighting applications. Herein, a Cu(I)-based 0D luminescent hybrid (1,3-dppH2)2Cu4I8∙H2O is synthesized by a facile solution method, and it shows the orange-red emission peaking at 625 nm upon 460 nm excitation. The structure-related luminescence mechanism has been elaborated by experimental and theoretical investigations. Moreover, the emission intensity remains unchanged even after continuous water treatment for 60 days due to the improved structural stability originating from intermolecular π–π interaction between organic cations. A warm white light-emitting diode (LED) device with the color rendering index of 91.4% has been fabricated by combining the 440 nm LED chip, green-emitting Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+, and (1,3-dppH2)2Cu4I8∙H2O. This work provides a new design route towards 0D cuprous halide materials and will initiate more exploration of their intrinsic luminescence mechanism.

   DOPING MN2+

Аннотация: Doping is able to create novel optoelectronic properties of halide perovskites, and the involved mechanism of efficient emission is still a challenge. Herein Mn2+ substitution into 2D layered perovskites (C8H20N2)PbBr4 was investigated, demonstrating broad-band orange-red emission originating from the 4T1 → 6A1 transition of Mn2+ dopant. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of Mn2+ emission is up to 60.8% related to the energy transfer in coupled states. We verify that an actual Mn2+ dopant as low as 0.476% reaches a high PLQY, whereas the nominal adding amount is 0.8 as the Mn2+/Pb2+ ratio. The small activation energy (∼6.72 meV) between the Mn2+ d state and the trap state accounts for this highly efficient energy transfer and photoluminescence. The proposed luminescence mechanism in Mn2+-doped 2D halide perovskites would provide unique insights into the doping design toward high-performance luminescence materials.

zero-dimensional Mn2+-based halides -- ultrafast self-assembly -- photoluminescence -- white LEDs -- solid-state displays
Аннотация: The discovery of narrow-band luminescent materials remains an immense challenge to optimize the performance of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). So far, the zero-dimensional (0D) Mn2+-based halides with near-unity narrow-band emissions have emerged as a class of promising phosphors in solid-state displays, but the related large-scale synthesis strategies have not been proposed and evaluated. Herein, we report an in situ synthetic process of 0D Mn2+-based halides and utilize (C20H20P)2MnBr4 as a case to investigate the photoluminescence characteristics and the structural essence of ultrafast self-assembly. The bright green emission peak at 523 nm with a full width at half maximum of 48 nm for (C20H20P)2MnBr4 is attributed to the d–d transition (4T1–6A1) of tetrahedrally coordinated [MnBr4]2– centers, and the fabricated white LED device shows a wide color gamut of 103.7% National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard. Remarkably, the experimental and theoretical results indicate that there are hydrogen bonding of C–H···Br and weak van der Waals interactions between [C20H20P]+ and [MnBr4]2–, resulting in the root for the realization of ultrafast self-assembly in 0D Mn2+-based halides. This work reveals a feasible and general synthesis method for preparing 0D Mn2+-based halides, thereby providing a possibility for their industrial application in solid-state displays.

EMITTING PHOSPHOR
   PHOTOLUMINESCENCE PROPERTIES

   PHASE-TRANSITION

Аннотация: Blue light pumped red luminescence with broadband and high photon-energy emission is highly desired for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-wLEDs), to achieve a high color rendering index and high luminous efficacy. Mn4+-doped red-emitting phosphors generally exhibit sharp vibronic emissions associated with the parity- and spin-forbidden 2Eg → 4A2g transitions. In this paper, two abnormal luminescence behaviors were observed for Mn4+ in the MgAl2O4:Mn4+ spinel phosphor with a short wavelength emission band peaking at 651 nm. Firstly, the Mn4+ 2Eg → 4A2g transition exhibits ultrabroadband luminescence in MgAl2O4 and the large full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) is dependent both on the calcination temperature and on the partial substitution of Al3+ with Ga3+. Secondly, the thermal quenching behavior of the Mn4+ 2Eg → 4A2g luminescence in MgAl2O4 shows a dependence on its thermal treatment and preparation method. The Rietveld refinement and Raman results demonstrate that the variation in the FWHM of the luminescence spectra is a sum effect of structural ordering (i.e., isotropic displacement decrease of constituent atoms) and the Mg ↔ Al anti-site disorder. A model for the observed varying thermal quenching of luminescence was tentatively proposed. The intrinsic thermal quenching temperature of Mn4+ luminescence in MgAl2O4 was found to be 390–400 K using the samples prepared by the co-precipitation and molten salt methods. The present work gives a novel perspective to understand the luminescence spectra of Mn4+ 2Eg → 4A2g transition.

Аннотация: Low-dimensional hybrid metal halides demonstrate broad-band emission and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) acting as excellent candidates for a new generation of luminescent materials in lighting fields. However, most luminescent metal halides can only be excited by ultraviolet radiation, and the discovery of high-efficient emitters with broad-band excitation characteristics, especially upon efficient blue light irradiation, is a challenge. Herein, a zero-dimensional (0D) Cu(I)-based organometallic halide (18-crown-6)2Na2(H2O)3Cu4I6 (CNCI) was prepared with a green emission band centered at 536 nm and a near-unity PLQY (91.8%) upon excitation of 450 nm. Importantly, the ultrabroad excitation band covering a 300-500 nm range was observed in CNCI, and the luminescence mechanism has been discussed in detail. A white light-emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated with high luminous efficiency of 156 lm/W and a high color rendering index of 89.6. This work provides guidance for designing high-performance luminescent metal halides with suitable excitation characteristics and also promotes the application prospects of such materials in WLED fields.

Аннотация: Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) have great potential in photonic, optoelectronic and biological applications, while the discovery of a broad-band NIR phosphor still remains a challenge. Here, we report a novel Cr3+-activated MgTa2O6 phosphor with an asymmetrical emission band ranging from 700 to 1150 nm and a large full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 140 nm upon 460 nm blue light excitation. The broad spectrum is assigned to the overlap of two bands centered at 910 and 834 nm, which originate from the spin-allowed transition of 4T2 → 4A2 for different Cr3+ ions located in the two six-coordinated crystallographic sites of Mg2+ and Ta5+, respectively. The distribution of blood vessels and bones in human palm and wrist is observed with the assistance of a commercial NIR camera and a fabricated pc-LED, which demonstrates that the MgTa2O6:Cr3+ phosphor is promising in biological applications.

2D-layered perovskite -- Bi3+ emission -- ion exchange -- photoluminescence tuning -- white light LEDs
Аннотация: Topological chemical reaction methods are indispensable for fabricating new materials or optimizing their functional properties, which is particularly important for two-dimensional (2D)-layered compounds with versatile structures. Herein, we demonstrate a low-temperature (∼350 °C) ion exchange approach to prefabricate metastable phosphors ALa1–xTa2O7:xBi3+ (A = K and Na) with RbLa1–xTa2O7:xBi3+ serving as precursors. The as-prepared ALa0.98Ta2O7:0.02 Bi3+ (A = Rb, K, and Na) share the same Dion–Jacobson type 2D-layered perovskite phase, and photoluminescence analyses show that ALa0.98Ta2O7:0.02 Bi3+ (A = Rb, K, and Na) phosphors exhibit broad emission bands peaking at 540, 550, and 510 nm, respectively, which are attributed to the nonradiative transition of Bi3+ from excited state 3P1 or 3P0 to ground state 1S0. The various Bi3+ local environments at the crystallographic sites enable the different distributions of emission and excitation spectra, and the photoluminescence tuning of ALa0.98Ta2O7:0.02 Bi3+ (A = Rb, K, and Na) phosphors are realized through alkali metal ion exchange. Notably, the combination of superior trivalent bismuth emission and low-temperature ion exchange synthesis leads to a novel yellow-emitting K(La0.98Bi0.02)Ta2O7 phosphor which is successfully applied in a white LED device based on a commercially available 365 nm LED chip. Our realizable cases of this low-temperature ion exchange strategy could promote exploration into metastable phosphors with intriguing properties.

Аннотация: Luminescent (C5H13N2S)2[MnBr4] (1) and (C7H17N2S)2[MnBr4] (2) (C5H12N2S = N,N′-diethylthiourea, C7H16N2S = N,N′-diisopropylthiourea) were prepared via solvothermal method, and the structures of these compounds have been resolved using X-ray single crystal diffraction. The structures consist of electrostatically bound MnBr42− anions and organic C5H13N2S+ and C7H17N2S+ cations. The intermolecular N−H···Br and N−H···S hydrogen bonds additionally stabilize crystal structures of 1-2. Upon excitation over broadband covering the range 265 to 515 nm, these compounds show green emission peaking at 526 nm for 1 and 522 nm for 2, which is assigned to the 4T1→ 6A1 electronic transition of Mn2+ from isolated within the crystal structures MnBr42− tetrahedra. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of powder 1 is 97 ± 7% for excitation at 440 nm and that of powder 2 is 83 ± 7% for excitation at 365 nm. The high PLQY indicates the absence of noticeable concentration quenching at shortest Mn···Mn distance of 8.11 and 8.73 Å between Mn2+ ions within the structures of 1 and 2. The high-performance photoluminescence of 0D (C5H13N2S)2[MnBr4] and (C7H17N2S)2[MnBr4] compounds demonstrated promising applications in photonics.

Аннотация: Controlled photoluminescence tuning is important for the optimization and modification of phosphor materials. Herein we report an isostructural solid solution of (CaMg)x(NaSc)1-xSi2O6 (0 < x < 1) in which cation nanosegregation leads to the presence of two dilute Eu2+ centers. The distinct nanodomains of isostructural (CaMg)Si2O6 and (NaSc)Si2O6 contain a proportional number of Eu2+ ions with unique, independent spectroscopic signatures. Density functional theory calculations provided a theoretical understanding of the nanosegregation and indicated that the homogeneous solid solution is energetically unstable. It is shown that nanosegregation allows predictive control of color rendering and therefore provides a new method of phosphor development. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: Local structure modification in solid solution is an essential part of photoluminescence tuning of rare earth doped solid state phosphors. Herein we report a new solid solution phosphor of Eu2+-doped xSr2Ca(PO4)2-(1 - x)Ca10Li(PO4)7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), which share the same β-Ca3(PO4)2 type structure in the full composition range. Depending on the x parameter variation in xSr2Ca(PO4)2-(1 - x)Ca10Li(PO4)7:Eu2+, the vacancies generated in the M(4) site enable the nonlinear variation of cell parameters and volume, and this increases the magnitude of M(4)O6 polyhedra distortion. The local structure modulation around the Eu2+ ions causes different luminescent behaviors of the two-peak emission and induces the photoluminescence tuning. The shift of the emission peaks in the solid solution phosphors with different compositions has been discussed. It remains invariable at x ≤ 0.5, but the red-shift is observed at x > 0.5 which is attributed to combined effect of the crystal field splitting, Stokes shift, and energy transfer between Eu2+ ions. The temperature-dependent luminescence measurements are also performed, and it is shown that the photoionization process is responsible for the quenching effect.

Аннотация: Dopants in luminescent metal halides provide an alternative way for photoluminescence tuning towards versatile optical applications. Here we report a trivalent antimony (Sb3+)-doped single crystalline 0D metal halide with the composition of (C9NH20)9[Pb3Cl11](ZnCl4)2:Sb3+. This compound possessed the coexistence of two emission centers including intrinsic and extrinsic self-trapped excitons (STEs), which are ascribed to [Pb3Cl11]5− clusters and triplet STEs formed by the 3P1–1S0 transition of Sb3+. By regulating the Sb3+ concentration, the emission can be tuned from green to yellow and finally to orange, which would help to develop optically pumped white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with different photometric characteristics. Moreover, this dopant-induced extrinsic STE approach presents a new direction towards tuning the luminescence properties of 0D metal halides, and may find application in environmentally-friendly, high-performance metal halide light emitters.

Аннотация: Low-dimensional metal halides have emerged as promising platforms for the development of new-generation phosphor-converted light emitting diodes (pc-LEDs), in which zero-dimensional (0D) hybrids with lone-pair ns2 states, in particular, show unprecedented competitiveness owing to their fascinating photoluminescence (PL) properties. Herein, we designed a novel 0D indium hybrid, (C20H20P)2InCl5, and proposed a co-doping strategy to incorporate Bi3+ (6s2) and Sb3+ (5s2) ions into this indium hybrid. Widely tunable emissions from blue to red are achieved, which are assigned to the triplet self-trapped excitons (STEs) (3P1 → 1S0) of Bi3+ (476 nm) and Sb3+ (658 nm), respectively. Importantly, an uncommon triplet–triplet energy transfer from Bi3+ to Sb3+ contributes to tunable dual emissions, and enables a single-phase cool white-light emission under ultraviolet (UV) excitation. Moreover, the energy transfer mechanism is discussed clearly by fluorescence photon dynamic analysis and DFT calculations. This work provides a deeper insight into triplet–triplet energy transfer, as well as presents a new model system for tuning the PL behaviours of ns2 configuration dopants.

Аннотация: Triple molybdate NaCaLa(1-x-y)(MoO4)3:xEr3+,yYb3+ (x = y = 0, x = 0.05 and y = 0.45, x = 0.1 and y = 0.2, x = 0.2 and y = 0) phosphors were successfully synthesized for the first time by the microwave sol-gel method. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat treatment at 900 °C for 16 h showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of 2-3 ?m. The structures were refined by the Rietveld method in the space group I41/a. The optical properties were examined comparatively using photoluminescence emission and Raman spectroscopy. Under excitation at 980 nm, the NaCaLa0.7(MoO4)3:0.1Er3+,0.2Yb3+ and NaCaLa0.5(MoO4)3:0.05Er3+,0.45Yb3+ particles exhibited a strong 525 nm emission band, a weaker 550 nm emission band in the green region, and three weak 655 nm, 490 nm and 410 nm emission bands in the red, blue and violet regions. The pump power dependence and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity of the upconversion emission intensity were evaluated in detail. © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Аннотация: Tb0.985Ce0.015)3(Al1-xGax)5O12 garnet phosphors (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 1.0) were prepared by calcining their coprecipitated precursors in air at 1500 °C, followed by reduction in hydrogen at 1200 °C. Rietveld refinement of the XRD results suggested that the Ga dopant predominantly resides at the octahedral Al site of the garnet lattice. Ga doping led to linearly expanded lattice constant, cell volume and theoretical density of the garnet compound and successively lower intensity and longer average fluorescence lifetime of the ~ 570 nm emission of Ce3+. Blue shifted emission and 4f(2F5/2)→5d1(E2g) excitation and red shifted 4f(2F5/2)→5d2(E2g) excitation were also observed for the Ce3+ activator at a higher Ga content. The phenomena were interpreted by considering the band structure of the host, distortion of the CeO8 polyhedron, and centroid shift and field splitting of the Ce3+ 5d energy levels.

electron-transition -- hybrid metal halides -- optical-functional applications -- self-trapped excitons -- tunable photoluminescence
Аннотация: Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) have emerged as a promising platform for optically functional crystalline materials, but it is extremely challenging to thoroughly elucidate the electron transition coupled to additional ligand emission. Herein, to discover sequences of lead-free HMHs with distinct optically active metal cations are aimed, that is, Sb3+ (5s2) with the lone-pair electron configuration and In3+ (4d10) with the fully-filled electron configuration. (Me2NH2)4MCl6·Cl (Me = −CH3, M = Sb, In) exhibits the superior temperature/component-dependent luminescence behaviors resulting from the competition transition between triplet-states (Tn-S0) self-trapped excitons (STEs) of inorganic units and singlet-state (S1-S0) of organic cations, which is manipulated by the optical activity levels of [SbCl6]3− and [InCl6]3−. The bonding differences between Sb3+/In3+ and Cl− in terms of electronic excitation and hybridization are emphasized, and the different electron-transition mechanisms are established according to the PL spectra at the extreme temperature of 5 to 305 K and theoretical calculations. By fine-tuning the B-site Sb3+/In3+ alloying, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY = 81.5%) and stability are optimized at 20% alloying of Sb3+. This research sheds light on the rules governing PL behaviors of HMHs, as well as exploring the optical-functional application of aviation temperature sensors and access-control systems.

Lead-free ceramics -- Raman spectroscopy -- Domain morphology -- Photoluminescence
Аннотация: Present work focuses on detailed temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, domain configuration, and photoluminescence (PL) studies in the (Ba0·85Ca0.15) (Zr0·10Ti0.90)O3 (BCZT) ceramics. The comprehensive Raman spectroscopy analysis in the present work not only validates the presence of the intermediate orthorhombic phase in BCZT, but also provides evidence of another transition: rhombohedral R3c phase to R3m at low temperature. Temperature behaviour of the lowest frequency transverse optical mode (soft E (TO) phonon) and hard modes was studied. Temperature dependence of peak positions, intensities, and linewidths of Raman phonon modes signalled the presence of phase transitions near −50 ± 5 °C, 0±5 °C, 35±5 °C and 110 ± 10 °C. Evolution of domain morphology occurring at phase transitions above room temperature was studied by piezoresponse force microscopy technique. Analysis of PL spectra revealed disorder/heterogeneity in the sample and indicated the existence of self-trapped excitons. PL spectra are composed of four distinct colour components (~2.55eV:blue, ~2.32eV:green, ~2.08eV:orange and ~1.78eV:red).

Аннотация: 0.5Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 [50BZT-50BCT or BCZT] based compounds have been the focus of a lot of research, particularly motivated by their high piezoelectric effect. However, the literature lacks an elaborate investigation of the phase transition behavior in BCZT ceramics obtained by wet chemistry processing. Here, we present an in-depth study on the temperature dependence of x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, dielectric properties, local piezoresponse and photoluminescence (PL) to investigate the sequence of phase transitions in the BCZT ceramic synthesized via a chemical route. Phase formation was determined by Rietveld analysis of XRD data, while compositional homogeneity and elemental quantification of the compound was validated using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. Detailed fitting of XPS data indicated the existence of Ti3+ species (∼6%) in the prepared BCZT. Phase transitions were examined by analyzing the modifications in the XRD profile of Bragg reflection {200} and anomalies observed in the temperature variation of dielectric and Raman spectra studied over a wide temperature range starting from 10K to beyond Curie temperature. Crystallographic transformation temperatures obtained from dielectric measurement agreed well with those assessed from the temperature evolution of Raman spectra. In addition to other transitions, Raman scattering results revealed the existence of a transition from to phase near −175 °C, a transition that has not been interpreted in BCZT (and generally not observed in parent BaTiO3 compound). The luminescence response was studied by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy in the temperature range 15–300 K. The position of the PL peak was observed to shift with temperature and discontinuities in the wavelength shift were noted near phase transitions. Evolution of domain morphology with temperature was examined by piezoresponse force microscopy technique. Consolidated results assign the phase sequence in sol-gel derived BCZT as: R(R3c)→-175±10°CR(R3m)→-50±10°CO→40±10°CT→120±10°CC.

Аннотация: The union of temperature-dependent phase transition and relating structural transformation via modification of chemical compositions is of fundamental importance for the discovery of new materials or their functional properties optimization. Herein, the synthesis temperature and Eu2+-doping content induced phase selection and variations of the local structures in nepheline, low-carnegieite and high-carnegieite types of NaAlSiO4 polymorphs were studied in detail. The luminescence of Eu2+ in low-carnegieite and nepheline phases shows blue (460 nm) and yellow (540 nm) broad-band emissions, respectively, under near-ultraviolet excitation. The photoluminescence evolution can be triggered by the different synthesis temperatures in relation to the Eu2+-doping concentration, as corroborated by density functional theory calculations on the local coordination structures and corresponding mechanical stabilities in terms of the Debye temperature. The fabricated white light-emitting diode device with high color rendering index demonstrates that the multicolor phosphors from one system provides a new gateway for the photoluminescence tuning. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

Photoluminescence -- Eu3+ ions -- Monoclinic Gd2O3 -- Nanophosphors -- Laser vaporization
Аннотация: Europium doped Gd2O3 sphere-like nanoparticles with dm = 9.3 ± 3.5 nm were synthesized by cw CO2 laser vaporization technique in a flowing mixture of argon and oxygen. According to XRD data, the Eu:Gd2O3 nanoparticles crystallize in the monoclinic symmetry class (C2/m space group). High-resolution luminescence spectroscopy study showed that the ultra-narrow 5D0 → 7F0 transition of Eu3+ demonstrates only two peaks corresponding to two inequivalent Cs positions of Eu3+ ion in monoclinic Gd2O3 lattice that is explained by the peculiarities of local environment of Eu3+ ion at these sites. The hypersensitive transition 5D0 → 7F2 dominates in the spectrum and is expanded to the red part of the spectrum in comparison with cubic Eu:Gd2O3 due to intense transitions terminating at higher-lying components of the crystal-field-split 7F2 state. In the luminescence spectrum, an additional weak band with the maximum at 407 nm corresponding to the electronic transitions 4f65 d1(7FJ) → 4f7(8S7/2) of Eu2+ was detected. The obtained values of chromaticity coordinates and absolute quantum yield are (0.644; 0.325) and ca. 1%, respectively. The phase transformations have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (50–1400 °C). After annealing in air at 700 °C, the monoclinic symmetry class of the Eu:Gd2O3 nanoparticles is preserved and the particle size increases to dm = 17.8 ± 6.1 nm. After annealing, the chromaticity coordinates (0.659; 0.334) and absolute quantum yield (ca. 4%) can be obtained using red phosphor based on monoclinic Gd2O3:Eu3+. The lifetime of the excited 5D0 state of Eu3+ in the annealed nanoparticles is longer than that in the as-synthesized nanoparticles, due to the suppression of nonradiative decay after annealing.

Ca2Al3O6 -- Structure -- Spectroscopic properties
Аннотация: The Ca2A13O6F oxyfluoride was recently proposed as an efficient host for the luminescence materials; however the crystal structure remains to be unknown. We present a combined structural analysis on the powder sample of Ca2Al3O6F using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Infrared spectroscopy technique. XRD studies showed that the structure of crystallized in the rhombohedral system, R3 space group. The crystal structure consists of almost ideal AlO4 tetrahedrons, linked through corners, Ca ions in voids, and F disordered to 18 sites around Ca2 ion. Calculated Raman and infrared phonon modes agree qualitatively well with the experimental data. Lattice dynamics simulation based on the simplified version of the Born-Karman potential model. Calculations shows that line at 539 cm[[p]]-1[[/p]](A[[d]]g[[/d]]) corresponds to vibrational mode of six-niembered AlO4 tetrabedwns ring, and line at 573 cm[[p]]-1[[/p]](A[[d]]g[[/d]]) corresponds to the full symmetric vibration of fluorine atoms on ab crystal plane.
