Аннотация: Structural, optical and nonlinear optical properties of strontium tetraborate (SBO) single crystals are summarized. SBO presently is not considered to be a ferroelectric, however, domain structures consisting of alternating oppositely poled domains, strongly resembling those present in such ferroelectrics as potassium titanyl phosphate and lithium niobate, were recently discovered in this crystal. Such geometrical properties as orientation, size, and degree of randomization, of these domain structures are described. The problem of origin of domain structures in SBO is considered, as well as the possibility of their characteristics control. From the point of view of optical properties, domain-structured samples of strontium tetraborate are classified as randomized nonlinear photonic crystals. Comparative study of nonlinear diffraction and random quasi-phase-matching of nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses in these nonlinear photonic crystals is presented. Prospects of creation of nonlinear optical converters of laser radiation into VUV spectral region based on domain structured strontium tetraborate are discussed.

Аннотация: В статье описан перспективный способ получения водорода – ​фотоэлектрохимическое расщепление воды. Этот подход сочетает непосредственное использование солнечной энергии и низкую стоимость производства фотоэлектрохимических ячеек из широко распространенных на Земле полупроводниковых материалов. Последние достижения в конструировании таких ячеек включают наноструктурирование полупроводниковых электродов плазмонными материалами.This article describes a promising hydrogen formation method, namely the photoelectrochemical water splitting. This approach combines the direct use of solar energy and low production cost of photoelectrochemical cells using the widely used semiconductor materials. The latest advances in such cell design include nanostructuring of the semiconductor electrodes with plasmonic materials.

Аннотация: The effect of the shape of the nanoparticles and the polarization of incident light on the surface current density and the efficiency of an organic solar cell based on the Tamm plasmon polariton is investigated. In the cases of both elongated and flattened nanoparticles, it is shown that the efficiency of such a solar cell is increased when the electric field vector is parallel to the largest axis of the spheroid.

Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A particular option consisting of the independent engineering of a strong four-wave mixing response and the negative refractive index is proposed and its specific features are investigated. The feasibility of quantum control over the slab transparency in such a scheme is confirmed through numerical experiments. We thus show opportunities and conditions for the compensation of the strong absorption inherent to plasmonic negative-index metamaterials, and we further show achievable transparency through coherent energy transfer from the control optical field to the negative-index signal.

Аннотация: It remains a critical challenge to develop narrow-band emitters for wide color gamut displays. Herein, it is designed by the selective site occupancy engineering and an unprecedented narrow-band green-emitting phosphor is prepared through chemical substitution. By introducing Ga3+ ions into Sr2LiAlO4:Eu2+ phosphor, the distribution of Eu2+ ions in Sr1 and Sr2 sites is effectively controlled, and only one type of luminescent centers Eu2+(Sr1) is remained in Sr2LiAl0.6Ga0.4O4:Eu2+ due to the compression effect of Sr2O8 polyhedra. Sr2LiAl0.6Ga0.4O4:Eu2+ phosphor presents an extremely narrow-band green emission centered at 512 nm with a full-width at half-maximum of only 40 nm. The wide color gamut (107% National Television System Committee) of the as-fabricated white liquid crystal displays and the vivid figures captured from the projector demonstrate the potential application of narrow-band emitter for wide-color gamut displays. This work provides the design principles of realizing narrow-band emission by selective site occupancy engineering and can set the stage for the exploring of Eu2+-activated phosphor for high definition displays.

Аннотация: Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are an important soft material for display and sensing technologies due to their unique optical and thermal properties, which are susceptible to external perturbations such as the electric field and temperature variation. The typically periodic structure of a CLC with a twist between molecular layers permits its chiral photonic crystallinity and the resulting selective reflection of a bandwidth in the otherwise generally high transmission spectrum of incident light. Here we report on a novel dual-mode CLC device as smart glass that enables the transparency to be self-adaptive to temperature and is simultaneously characterized by a fully on-demand, electrically controlled function, allowing users to regulate the suitable or desired extent of transparency in accordance with their living climate zones or personal needs. The working principle is based on the controllable strength of voltage-induced electrohydrodynamic flow, generating temperature-dependent dynamic scattering for passive control. Moreover, the transmission can be reversibly modulated and switched by applied AC voltage for active control between the transparent and opaque states. As a proof of concept, the characteristic Bragg reflection can be designed to sit in the near-infrared region to partially block unwanted thermal radiation in the optically transparent state.

Аннотация: The polarizing spectroscopy techniques in visible range optics have been used since the beginning of the 20th century to study the anisotropy of crystals based on birefringence and optical activity phenomena. On the other hand, the phenomenon of X-ray optical activity has been demonstrated only relatively recently. It is a selective probe for the element-specific properties of individual atoms in non-centrosymmetric materials. We report the X-ray Natural Circular Dichroism (XNCD) imaging technique which enables spatially resolved mapping of X-ray optical activity in non-centrosymmetric materials. As an example, we present the results of combining micro-focusing X-ray optics with circularly polarized hard X-rays to make a map of enantiomorphous twinning in a multiferroic SmFe3(BO3)4 crystal. Our results demonstrate the utility and potential of polarization-contrast imaging with XNCD as a sensitive technique for multiferroic crystals where the local enantiomorphous properties are especially important. In perspective, this brings a novel high-performance method for the characterization of structural changes associated with phase transitions and identification of the size and spatial distribution of twin domains.

Аннотация: Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted considerable research attention due to their infinite quality factor (Q-factor) and extremely localized fields, which drastically enhances light–matter interactions and yields high potential in topological photonics and quantum optics. In this study, the room temperature directional lasing normal to a BIC metasurface is demonstrated with hybrid surface lattice resonances. Compared to the plasmonic nanolasers, the BIC metasurface lasers possess directional radiation and a larger emission volume. The high Q-factor resonance of BIC metasurface overcomes the limitation of a large mode volume in achieving low-threshold lasing. In addition, a design rule is proposed to prevent the occurrence of wavelength shift when the Q-factor changes; thus, the lasing thresholds for different BIC metasurfaces can be compared. In this work, the high localization ability of BICs is used to achieve the low lasing threshold (1.25 nJ) at the room temperature. The “light in–light out” diagram of the aforementioned laser based on simulations and experiments exhibits a large spontaneous emission coupling factor (β = 0.9) and the S-curve. The device developed in this study can be used in various applications, such as quantum emitters, optical sensing, nonlinear optics, and topological states engineering.

Аннотация: Neodymium iron bor­ate NdFe3(BO3)4 is an intensively studied multiferroic with high electric polarization values controlled by a magnetic field. It is char­ac­ter­ized by a large quadratic magnetoelectric effect, rigidity in the base plane and a rather strong piezoelectric effect. In this work, the atomic structure of (Nd0.91Bi0.09)Fe3(BO3)4 was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the tem­per­ature range 20–500 K (space group R32, Z = 3). The Bi atoms found in the com­position partially substitute the Nd atoms in the 3a position; they entered the structure due to the growth conditions in the presence of Bi2Mo3O12. It was shown that in the tem­per­ature range 20–500 K there is no structural phase transition R32→P3121, which occurs in rare-earth iron bor­ates (RE = Eu–Er, Y) with an effective rare-earth cation radius smaller than that of Nd. The tem­per­ature dependence of the unit-cell c parameter reveals a slight increase on cooling below 90 K, which is similar to the results obtained previously for iron bor­ates of Gd, Y and Ho. The atomic distances (Nd,Bi)—O, (Nd,Bi)—B, (Nd,Bi)—Fe, Fe—O, Fe—B and Fe—Fe in the iron chains and between chains decrease steadily with decreasing tem­per­ature from 500 to 90 K, whereas the B1(3b)—O distance does not change and the average B2(9e)—O distance increases slightly. There is a uniform decrease in the atomic displacement parameters with decreasing tem­per­ature, with a more pronounced decrease for the Nd(3a) and O2(9e) atoms. The O2(9e) atoms are characterized by the maximum atomic displacement parameters and the most elongated atomic displacement ellipsoids. The characteristic Debye and Einstein tem­per­atures, and the static com­ponent in the atomic displacements were determined for cations using multi-tem­per­ature diffraction data. It was shown that the Nd cations have the weakest bonds with the surrounding atoms and the B cations have the strongest.

Аннотация: By variation of a refractive index and aspect ratio of the isolated disk, we achieved exceptional points (EPs) at which the resonant frequencies and resonant modes coalesce. However, in practice, that kind of variation presents a technological problem. We considered the method to avoid the problem by substitution of two disk’s dimers. In each dimer, variation of the distance between disks was equivalent to a variation of the aspect ratio of the dimer. Moreover, the variation of the distance between dimers provides the second parameter that gives rise to a vast number of EPs. We recovered the initial resonant eigenmode by encircling multiple EPs two, three, and four times in the two-dimensional parametric space of distances.

Аннотация: Топологический изолятор – это материал, одновременно проявляющий свойства проводника на поверхности и изолятора в объеме. Игрой Руднера называют упрощенную модель топологического изолятора, экспериментально реализованную на двумерных фотонных решетках и описывающуюся как клеточный автомат, подобный игре жизнь Конвея. Трехцветным клеточным автоматом называют регулярную решетку ячеек, каждая из которых окрашена в один из трех цветов и задано правило перекрашивания ячеек. В данной работе два цвета клеточного автомата соответствуют отсутствию и наличию фотона в резонаторе, а третий цвет – границе области. Игра Руднера обобщается на случай трехмерного массива оптических резонаторов и демонстрируются определяющие свойства топологического изолятора. Вводится класс клеточных автоматов, сохраняющих границу и количество фотонов, а также нулевую групповую скорость для фотонов, удаленных от поверхности. Ожидаются физические реализации в фотонике, электронике, механике и акустике.A topological insulator is a material that simultaneously exhibits the properties of a conductor on the surface and an insulator in volume. Rudner's game is a simplified model of a topological insulator, experimentally implemented on two-dimensional photonic lattices and described as a cellular automaton similar to Conway's game of life. A three-color cellular automaton is a regular lattice of cells. Each cell takes one of three colors according to the specified cell recoloring rule. In this work, two colors of the cellular automaton correspond to the absence and presence of a photon in the resonator, and the third color corresponds to the boundary of the region. The Rudner game is generalized to the case of a three-dimensional array of optical cavities and the defining properties of a topological insulator are demonstrated. A class of cellular automata is introduced that preserve the boundary and the number of photons, as well as zero group velocity for photons far from the surface. Physical realizations are expected in photonics, electronics, mechanics, and acoustics.

Аннотация: The possibility of creating a polarization-sensitive absorber on the basis of the splitting of a Tamm plasmon polariton at the interface between a metallic film and an anisotropic nanocomposite layer conjugated with a photonic crystal is theoretically predicted. The effect of geometrical parameters on the optical absorption spectra under the critical coupling conditions is discussed. It is shown that, changing the polarization of the radiation falling onto the structure along its normal, one can control the absorption at the Tamm plasmon polariton wavelength.

Аннотация: On an example of a system of three/four/five/six different coupled coaxial silicon disks, we realize a series of avoided crossings of resonances (ACRs) with respect to the different morphologies for the different scales of each disk. Each next step of ACR accompanied by the optimization processes of all previous ACRs contributes almost one order of magnitude to the Q-factor. As a result, we achieve unprecedented values for the Q-factors: 6.6·104 for three, 4.8·106 for four, 8.5·107 for five and several billions for six free standing silicon disks. Comparisons to such prominent methods as whispering gallery modes or quasi bound states in the continuum to boost the Q-factor demonstrate the tremendous advantage of the present approach not only in terms of Q-factor values but also in terms of mode volumes. Multipole analysis of the final hybridized resonant mode explains such extremely large Q-factor values. The analysis shows a strong redistribution of radiation owing to the almost-exact destructive interference of the dominating complex multipole radiation amplitudes.

Аннотация: A chiral nematic is embedded between multilayer mirrors to obtain voltage-inducible polarized resonance spectra. Initially, the nematic director is uniformly oriented perpendicular to the mirrors’ surfaces because the chiral nematic helix is completely untwisted due to the homeotropic boundary conditions specified by the adsorbed cations. Then, a voltage is applied to remove the layer of surface-active cations from the input mirror. The obtained twisted homeoplanar configuration has a helix pitch exceeding the layer’s thickness. The twisting leads to the anomalous blue shift of the o-modes in the transmittance spectrum of the photonic structure. This blue shift can be effectively compensated by repulsion of spectral peaks as a result of mode coupling in the vicinity of the virtual avoided crossing point. The experimental results obtained are confirmed numerically using the 4 ˣ 4 transfer matrix method and explained with the contribution of a geometric phase.

Аннотация: We consider light absorption in a germanium grating placed on top of photonic-crystalline substrate. Such a system supports an optical Tamm state decoupled from the continuous spectrum with its frequency within the photonic band gap. We have demonstrated that application of the Tamm state makes in possible to engineer extremely narrow absorber which provides a 100 % absorption in a semiconductor grating in the critical coupling regime. The proposed design may be used at both normal and oblique incidence at the telecom wavelength.
