Аннотация: We use the Monte Carlo method to compute the number of trees with n edges in the Eden model on d-dimensional simple cubic lattices for d = 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10. We compare these numbers with the exact data derived by the enumeration method up to n = 12 on the square lattice and up to n = 10 on the cubic lattice. We find that for d greater than or equal to 3, the computed values of the growth parameter for trees agree with the values that we derived earlier by the expansion in inverse powers of 2d - 1.

Аннотация: The homogeneous nematic layers in liquid crystal cells with treated surfaces are affected by orientational transitions in the electric, magnetic, or temperature fields. The liquid crystal structures formed on solid or liquid surfaces find limited application in identifying the liquid-crystal states by the textures observed in polarized light. The use of surfaces prepared from polymer solutions makes it possible to significantly broaden the range of application of the liquid crystal structures. We investigate the structures with the continuous transformation of the nematic director orientation from radial to planar, which were formed by the polycarbonate surface in the presence of different residual solvents. The structures contained the disclination lines that aligned either by a plate rubbed to provide the homogeneous planar orientation in the LC layer or by a magnetic field applied along the polycarbonate film during the structure formation. The orientational transitions caused by surface treatment, temperature, and electric or magnetic fields in these structures are observed. The comparison of temperature critical distance as well as electric and magnetic coherence lengths with equilibrium length calculated from the expression for the free energy of the nematic is performed. The electro-optical characteristics of the nematic structures are obtained.

Аннотация: Using the data on dispersion of refractive indices in the visible region, the experimental values of the components L-j of the Lorentz tensor have been obtained for uniaxial (crystalline, oriented on a substrate, and stretched) films of conjugated polymers from nanometer to micrometer thicknesses. The dependence of the components L-j on the axial and planar orientations of macromolecules with respect to the optical axis of the film, technology of fabricating the films, and chemical structure of macromolecules has been elucidated. The correlation between the components L-j and the measured parameter. has been determined and the analytical dependence L-j(eta) for films with both types of macromolecular orientation has been established. Аннотация: Synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) copolymers by the wild-type strain Cupriavidus necator B-10646 on fructose or sodium butyrate as the main C-substrate with the addition of γ-valerolactone as a precursor of 3HV and 4HV monomers was studied. Bacterial cells were cultivated in the modes that enabled production of a series of copolymers with molar fractions of 3HV (from 7.3 to 23.4 mol.%) and 4HV (from 1.9 to 4.7 mol.%) with bacterial biomass concentration (8.2 ± 0.2 g/L) and PHA content (80 ± 2%). Using HPLC, DTA, DSC, X-Ray, SEM, and AFM, the physicochemical properties of copolymers and films prepared from them have been investigated as dependent on proportions of monomers. Copolymers are characterized by a reduced degree of crystallinity (Cx 38–49%) molecular weight characteristics Mn (45–87 kDa), and Mw (201–248 kDa) compared with P(3HB). The properties of the films surface of various composition including the porosity and surface roughness were studied. Most of the samples showed a decrease in the average pore area and an increase in their number with a total increase in 3HV and 4HV monomers. The results allow scaling up the productive synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) copolymers using Cupriavidus necator B-10646.

biosynthesis -- different precursors -- sulfur-containing PHAs -- chemical composition -- 3MP monomers contents -- properties
Аннотация: The study addresses the growth of the wild-type strain Cupriavidus necator B-10646 and the synthesis of sulfur-containing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) by this strain on media containing fructose and three different precursors (3-mercaptopropionic acid, 3′,3′-dithiodipropionic acid and 3′,3′-thiodipropionic acid). By varying the concentration and number of doses of the precursors added into the bacterial culture, it was possible to find conditions that ensure the formation of 3-mercaptopropionate (3MP) monomers from the precursors and their incorporation into the C-chain of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). A series of P(3HB-co-3MP) copolymer samples with different content of 3MP monomers (from 2.04 to 39.0 mol.%) were synthesized and the physicochemical properties were studied. The effect of 3MP monomers is manifested in a certain decrease in the molecular weight of the samples and an increase in polydispersity. Temperature changes are manifested in the appearance of two peaks in the melting region with different intervals regardless of the 3MP content. The studied P(3HB-co-3MP) samples, regardless of the content of 3MP monomers, are characterized by equalization of the ratio of the amorphous and crystalline phases and have a close degree of crystallinity with a minimum of 42%, = and a maximum of 54%.

biocompatibility -- polyhydroxyalkanoates -- polyhydroxybutyrate -- polymer modification
Аннотация: Films from biodegradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate are treated with chemical reagents to improve their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Two approaches are tested: a single treatment with alkali, acids, oxidizing or reducing agents, and a step-by step treatment of the alkali pre-activated surface of polymer films with bromine water and amino-compounds (ammonia or triethylamine). The maximal level of hydrophilicity (the lowest water contact angle and the highest polar component of the surface free energy) is registered after a single treatment with NaOH and after the step-by-step treatment. These samples also showed the best adhesion of mouse fibroblasts of NIH 3T3 line on the film surface. So, the proposed methods can be used to enhance hydropilicity and biocompatibility of biopolymer surface.

biodegradable polymers -- poly-ε-caprolactone -- montmorillonite -- polymer composites -- processing technologies
Аннотация: Eco-friendly polymer composites in the form of granules based on biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) with the inclusion of montmorillonite (MMT) from 5 to 50 wt% were prepared by solution-casting and melt extrusion. The physicochemical properties of the composite granules were studied using FTIR spectroscopy, XRDA, DSC, and TGA methods. The paper presents comparative values of crystallinity of composite granules which depend on the method of measuring (XRDA, DSC). It was shown that the crystallinity of PCL/MMT granules was affected by the preparation method and by the MMT content, and that with increase in MMT content, crystallinity increased by up to 61–67%. The change in crystallinity of the granules also affected its biodegradation in soil. At the end of exposure in soil, the mass loss for the granules prepared by solution-casting was more than 90%, whereas for the composite granules prepared by extrusion it was less than 60%. Applying melt extrusion enabled obtaining intercalated composites with predictable features, whereas only mixed-structure microcomposites could be prepared by solution-casting.

2-Thiobarbiturate complexes -- 3D elements -- IR spectra -- Structure -- Synthesis -- Thermal stability
Аннотация: Four new compounds, the discrete complex [Ni(H2O) 6](HTBA)2 .2H2O (1) and the polymers Ni(H2O)2(HTBA-O,S)2 (2), Co(H 2O)2(HTBA-O,S)2 (3) and Fe(H2O) 2(HTBA-O,S)2 (4) (H2TBA = 2-thiobarbituric acid, C4H4N2O2S), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The structure of 1 has been solved by X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The Ni(H2O) 6 2+ cation has an almost ideal octahedral geometry, and there is no coordination of Ni(II) by HTBA- in 1. Complexes 2-4 have been characterized by powder XRD, TG-DSC and FT-IR. In the isostructural polymers 2-4, the metals are six-coordinated, and the octahedrons are connected by μ2-O,S bridging ligands. Each of the M(II) ions is surrounded by two water molecules, two O-coordinated HTBA- ions and two S-coordinated HTBA- ions, with all pairs being in trans-positions. Hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions play an important role for the construction of the supramolecular 3D structures of 2-4. The formation of the complexes has been evidenced by infrared spectroscopy. The thermal decomposition of 2-4 under oxidative conditions has been divided into three major stages: dehydration, oxidative degradation of the organic moiety and transformation of the inorganic residue. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. fungicides -- degradable P(3HB) -- slow-release formulations -- physico-chemical properties -- degradation in soil -- suppression of plant pathogens
Аннотация: Three-component slow-release fungicide formulations with different modes of action of the active ingredients for suppressing potato pathogens were constructed for the first time. The difenoconazole, mefenoxam, prothioconazole, and azoxystrobin fungicides were embedded in the degradable polymer P(3HB)/birch wood flour blend and examined using SEM, IR spectroscopy, X-ray analysis, DTA, and DSC. Results showed that no chemical bonds were established between the components and that they were physical mixtures that had a lower degree of crystallinity compared to the initial P(3HB), which suggested different crystallization kinetics in the mixtures. The degradation behavior of the experimental formulations was investigated in laboratory micro-ecosystems with pre-characterized field soil. The slow-release fungicide formulations were prolonged-action forms with a half-life of at least 50–60 d, enabling gradual and sustained delivery of the active ingredients to plants. All slow-release fungicide formulations had a strong inhibitory effect on the most common and harmful potato pathogens (Phytophthora infestans, Alternaria longipes, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium solani).
