    A dielectric model of thawed and frozen Arctic soils considering frequency, temperature, texture and dry density / V. L. Mironov, A. Yu. Karavayskiy, Yu. I. Lukin, I. P. Molostov // Int. J. Remote Sens. - 2020. - Vol. 41, Is. 10. - P. 3845-3865, DOI 10.1080/01431161.2019.1708506. - Cited References: 39 . - ISSN 0143-1161. - ISSN 1366-5901
Аннотация: A dielectric model was developed for thawed and frozen mineral soils, based on the refractive mixing dielectric formula and the dielectric measurement data for three soils collected in the Arctic tundra of the Yamal Peninsula. The refractive mixing dielectric model was used in conjunction with the Debye multi relaxation equations as a theoretical model to fit the measured complex relative permittivity spectra as a function of soil moisture and temperature. As a result, the dielectric spectroscopic parameters for the various components of water in the soil, such as the low- and high-frequency limits of the complex relative permittivity, the times of the corresponding relaxations, and the specific conductivity, were simultaneously determined for soils with different clay contents for all measured temperatures. As the theoretical temperature dependences of these parameters, the Clausius–Mossotti, Eyring, and linear equations for the conductivity were used. By using approximations of the measured data with these formulas, the parameters of the temperature-dependent model were derived, such as the coefficient of volume expansion, energy and entropy of activation, and coefficient of thermal conductivity. A set of the parameters discussed above in conjunction with the refractive mixing formula is a temperature- and mineralogically dependent multi-relaxation spectroscopic dielectric model, which enables estimation of the permittivity of moist soils as a function of dry soil density, moisture, frequency, temperature, and texture. The statistical error of the proposed dielectric model was estimated in terms of the normalized root-mean-square error (nRMSE), which was equal to 5% and 25% for the dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor, respectively.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal -- Nematic droplet -- Ionic surfactant -- Anchoring transition -- Director configuration -- Optical texture
Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Critical current -- Anizotropy -- BSCCO -- Texture -- Distribution function -- Magnetization -- Hysteresis loop
Аннотация: A misalignment of anisotropic crystallites causes small values of anisotropy and decreases the critical current density of textured polycrystalline superconductors. To relate the crystallite misalignment and out-plane anisotropy, the magnetic properties of the textured Bi2223 polycrystalline superconductor were investigated. A distribution of orientation angles of crystallites was determined using different data: scanning electron microscopy images and hysteresis magnetization loops when an external magnetic field was applied at different angles with respect to the texturing plane of the sample. It was demonstrated that the standard deviation of the distribution and the magnetic disorder angle of crystallites in textured samples can be determined from the magnetization data in perpendicular directions. These data may be either the irreversible magnetization measured for two different orientations of the sample or the simultaneously measured magnetization projections parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Magnetite -- Crystal texture -- Reactive deposition -- Magnetoresistance -- Magnetic saturation -- FORC
Аннотация: Nanocrystalline magnetite (Fe3O4) films with various preferred crystallite orientations were grown on oxidized silicon surface by reactive iron deposition in an oxygen atmosphere. Depending on the partial pressure of oxygen (PO2), the evolution of the structural, magnetic, and magnetotransport properties of the grown films was investigated. We found that the growth of films containing only the Fe3O4 phase occurs in a certain PO2 range, and the magnetite crystallites may have (311) or (110) preferred orientation. It was revealed that films with (311) and (110) textures have a column structure. An increase in the PO2 leads to a structure transformation from (311) to (110) texture with larger crystallites. A film with (110) texture showed higher values of saturation magnetization, magnetoresistance and spin polarization. The analysis of approach to magnetic saturation revealed that the local magnetic anisotropy of crystallites in textured films is much higher than the anisotropy of bulk magnetite due to the large surface contribution. The FORC diagram method in combination with the approach to magnetic saturation proved the existence of the exchange coupling between large and small grains. Our results open the reliable route for crystal texture-depending manipulation of functional properties of thin magnetite films for advanced spintronic applications.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal -- nematic droplet -- director -- configuration -- boundary conditions -- surface anchoring strength -- optical -- texture
Аннотация: The polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal (LC) with the tilted surface anchoring has been studied. The droplet orientational structures with two point surface defects – boojums and the surface ring defect – are formed within the films. The director tilt angle α = 40° ± 4° at the droplet interface and LC surface anchoring strength Ws ~ 10–6 (J m−2) have been estimated. The bipolar axes within the studied droplets of oblate ellipsoidal form can be randomly oriented are oriented randomly relatively to the ellipsoid axes as opposed to the droplets with homeotropic and tangential anchoring.

Black dye -- Liquid-crystal devices -- Texture switching -- Smart window -- Cholesteric liquid crystal -- Optical switch
Аннотация: We demonstrate a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) smart window that functions as a reversible thermo-optic switch between a transparent state at a low temperature and a low-transmission state at a higher temperature. This smart window is based on the addition of a thermoresponsive handedness-reversible chiral dopant in a mixture of a typical chiral dopant, a dichroic dye and nematic liquid crystal, yielding a thermosensitized CLC. In such a homeotropically anchored dye-doped CLC, the thickness-to-pitch ratio increases as the temperature rises, causing the device to switch from the homeotropic texture to the fingerprint texture. The absorption characteristic of the dichroic dye enables the homeotropic and fingerprint configurations in the dye-doped CLC to create two distinct transmission levels—the transparent and opaque optically stable states, respectively. Such a switching mechanism entails no additional electric power and, thus, is energy-saving. Moreover, the switching temperature at which the texture transition takes place can be actively increased by increasing voltage for the smart window. This allows the CLC device to be perfectly adaptable to the need of a user and, in turn, applicable to a wider variety of environments.

Перевод заглавия: Частотно-, температурно-, и минералогически-зависимая диэлектрическая модель мерзлых и влажных арктических минеральных почв
Аннотация: A simple single-frequency dielectric model for the set of frequencies which are 0.45, 1.26, 1.4, 1.6, 5.4, 6.9, 9.6, and 10.7 GHz for frozen mineral soils is developed. The model is based on the dielectric measurements of three typical soils (sandy loam, silt loam, and silty clay) at the temperature range from -1°C to -30°C. The measured data as a function of moisture were fitted with the refractive mixing dielectric model. The model parameters are maximum bound water fraction, and refractive indexes of soil solid, unfrozen bound water, and wet ice. In the result of fitting measured data, the model parameters were determined as a functions of soil type (clay content), and soil temperature. The error of the predicted values of the complex relative permittivity (CRP) of frozen soils relative to the measured ones was evaluated through determination coefficients, and root mean square error (RMSE). The values of RMSE are on the order of the dielectric measurement error itself. The proposed dielectric model can be applied in active and passive remote sensing techniques used in the cold regions.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
optical lattices -- superimposed gratings -- Talbot effect
Аннотация: Fresnel diffraction on periodic gratings results in a two-dimensional periodic distribution of light intensity, also known as the Talbot effect. Here this approach is extended to the family of superimposed structures with translational symmetry, which consist of superposed spatial harmonics. The Talbot effect is demonstrated to be valid for superimposed gratings. The considered superimposed gratings provide a wide range of textures of optical super-lattices. These texture super-lattices represent a Talbot carpets with a complex motif, which can be varied by choosing structure parameters. These results provide a new functionality for structuring optical lattices and can find potential applications in a wide range of light–matter interactions.
