Аннотация: The results are given of experimental and theoretical study for the photoinduced variation of the magnetic moment in FeBO3. In the experiment a SQUID-magnetometer provided with the optical pump system is used. The study of field, temperature and time dependences of the photoinduced magnetic moment variation for various levels of the optical emission power allows to find the mechanism responsible for changing magnetic state under irradiation. All the experimental results are explained within the model in which the crystal-matrix is described in the continual approximation and a photocenter, probably, Fe2+ ion is done as a quasi Ising S=1 ion coupled by exchange with one of the crystal magnetic sublattice. Under illuminating the redistribution of the principal multiplet level populations occurs so that the level of the stronger anisotropic character is populated predominantly due to the selection rules. The model used allows to calculate and explain the anisotropic properties of FeBO3 crystals and spin-flip transition in the basal plane at low temperature.

Аннотация: The optical properties and structure of gadolinium iron borate GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystals are studied at high pressures produced in diamond-anvil cells. X-ray diffraction data obtained at a pressure of 25.6 GPa reveal a first-order phase transition retaining the trigonal symmetry and increasing the unit cell volume by 8%. The equation of state is obtained and the compressibility of the crystal is estimated before and after the phase transition. The optical spectra reveal two electronic transitions at pressures similar to26 GPa and similar to43 GPa. Upon the first transition, the optical gap decreases jumpwise from 3.1 to similar to2.25 eV. Upon the second transition at P = 43 GPa, the optical gap deceases down to similar to0.7 eV, demonstrating a dielectric-semiconductor transition. By using the theoretical model developed for a FeBO3 crystal and taking into account some structural analogs of these materials, the anomalies of the high-pressure optical spectra are explained. Аннотация: The optical spectra and the second-harmonic generation (SHG) are studied in a noncentrosymmetric GdFe3(BO3)(4) magnet. In the region of weak absorption (alpha similar to 20-400 cm(-1)) below similar to3 eV, three absorption bands are distinguished, which can be unambiguously assigned to forbidden electronic transitions from the ground (6)A(1) state of the Fe3+ ion to its excited states T-4(1) (similar to1.4 eV), T-4(2) (similar to2 eV), and (4)A(1), E-4 (similar to2.8 eV). Intense absorption begins in the region above 3 eV (alpha similar to 2-4 x 10(5) cm(-1)), where two bands at similar to4.0 and 4.8 eV are observed, which are caused by allowed electric dipole charge-transfer transitions. The spectral features of SHG in the 1.2-3.0-eV region are explained by a change in the SHG efficiency caused by a change in the phase mismatch. It is shown that in the weak absorption region, phase matching can be achieved for SHG. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: A many-electron model of the energy band structure of VBO3 and of Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions is proposed with strong electron correlations taken into account. Experimental optical absorption spectra and data on the resistivity are discussed in the framework of the suggested model. Variation in the magnetic and electronic properties of VBO3 and Fe1 - xVxBO3 under high pressure is predicted. For VBO3, a Mott-Hubbard (insulator-metal) transition is expected in the high-pressure phase. In Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions, a nontrivial variation in the properties is predicted, leading to the appearance of a different magnetic state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The Mossbauer effect in the Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions has been measured at 130 and 300 K. The Fe0.05V0.95BO3 composition was studied in the interval 4.2-300 K. The experimental data obtained are described in terms of the model of a dilute magnetic insulator in which atoms of the first coordination sphere provide a major contribution to the hyperfine field at iron nucleus sites. It was found that, at low temperatures, the field H-hf is generated primarily by the iron ion itself and depends only weakly on substitution. The hyperfine interaction parameters in the discrete configuration series 6Fe, 5Fe1V, 4Fe2V, 3Fe3V, and 2Fe4V were determined. The magnitude of the isomer shift suggests that iron in the crystal resides in the trivalent state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The transformation of various properties of gadolinium ferroborate single crystals at phase transitions, both spontaneous and induced by magnetic fields up to 200 kOe, is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Particular attention is paid to elucidating the role of magnetoelectric interactions and the change in them at spin-reorientation transitions accompanied by a change of magnetic symmetry. With that goal the magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric properties of the system are investigated over a wide range of temperatures for two orientations of the magnetic field, H parallel to c and H perpendicular to c, and a fundamental difference of the character of the field dependences of the magnetostriction and electric polarization is found. In the framework of a symmetry approach a description of the magnetic structures and their transformations in the system GdFe3(BO3)(4) is proposed, and an interpretation of the experimentally observed properties is given. For the first time the nanosize effect of aluminum incorporation in manganese ferrite composition is experimentally shown, thus directly confirming the hypothesis of Al participation in exchange interaction between paramagnetic Fe and Mn ions as diamagnetic diluter.

Аннотация: The high-pressure magnetic states of iron borate (FeBO3)-Fe-57 single-crystal and powder samples have been investigated in diamond anvil cells by nuclear forward scattering (NFS) of synchrotron radiation at different temperatures. In the low-pressure (0 < P < 46 GPa) antiferromagnetic phase, an increase of the Neel temperature from 350 to 595 K induced by pressure was found. At pressures 46-49 GPa, a transition from the antiferromagnetic to a new magnetic state with a weak magnetic moment (magnetic collapse) was discovered. It is attributed to the electronic transition in Fe3+ ions from the high-spin 3d(5) (S = 5/2, (6)A(1g)) to the low-spin (S = 1/2, T-2(2g)) state (spin crossover) due to the insulator-semiconductor-type transition with extensive suppression of strong d-d electron correlations. At low temperatures, NFS spectra of the high-pressure phase indicate magnetic correlations in the low-spin system with a magnetic ordering temperature of about 50 K. A tentative magnetic P-T phase diagram of FeBO3 is proposed. An important feature of this diagram is the presence of two triple points where magnetic and paramagnetic phases of the high-spin and low-spin states coexist. © 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
