Аннотация: The design of 8-order band-pass filter based on 2-D photonic crystal is suggested. Strip conductors in all dual-mode resonators are in the form of irregular rectangular frame with a gap and are connected at certain points with the ground. At optimal placement of such resonators on a substrate attenuation pole is observed on the amplitude-frequency characteristic of the filter, near low and high bandwidth slope that significantly improves its frequency-selective properties. The change of gap between input and output resonators allows to control the frequency of these poles.

Аннотация: The Raman spectra of the elpasolite (Rb2KInF6) crystal have been studied in the pressure range from 0 to 5.3 GPa at a temperature of 295 K. A phase transition at a pressure of approximately 0.9 GPa has been found. An analysis of the variations in the spectral parameters has led to the conclusion that the phase transition to a distorted phase is accompanied by the doubling of the volume of the primitive cell of the initial cubic phase. Numerical calculations of the lattice dynamics in the Rb2KInF6 crystal have been performed. The numerical simulation has established that the phase transition at a pressure of 0.9 GPa is associated with condensation of the F (lg) mode. A probable high-pressure phase is the phase with space group C2/m.

Аннотация: Solid solutions in the Cs-x(NH4)(1 - x)LiSO4 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35) system are grown and investigated. The birefringence (n(a) - n(b)) and the heat capacity are measured in the temperature range 100-530 K. The (x-T) phase diagram is constructed. It is demonstrated that the substitution of cesium for ammonium in the NH4LiSO4 crystal affects the transition temperatures in such a way that the region of the ferroelectric phase increases and the ferroelastic phase disappears at x 0.22. The character of the high-temperature transition remains unchanged (2beta = 0.24 +/- 0.01 for all compositions), but the birefringence anomaly and enthalpy decrease. As the concentration x increases, the low-temperature transition becomes more similar to a first-order transition: the birefringence jump deltan and the temperature hysteresis DeltaT increase. Аннотация: A microwave detector based on a self-sustained oscillator circuit is proposed as a means to investigate the real and imaginary components of the dielectric permittivity of liquid crystals in external electric and magnetic fields. Results are given for measurements of a 500 MHz oscillator frequency for two types of nematic crystals, 5CBP and MBBA. Fundamental regularities are identified in the behavior of the microwave dielectric permittivity of samples in electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that the minimum of the high-frequency dielectric loss in liquid crystals correspond to a situation in which the long axes of the molecules are oriented parallel to the direction of the microwave electric field. Аннотация: Epicuticular waxes are a multifunctional interface between a plant and the environment. In this paper wheat leaves wax has been studied. Wax isolation was carried out using the method of gradual freezing in water followed by slow thawing. The morphology of the samples obtained was observed with a Hitachi SU3500 electron microscope. The structure period is determined by the nanotubes diameter which equals 150-200 nm. Random orientation of their long axes in the layer allows using a one-dimensional model to calculate the transmission spectrum of a photonic crystal with the help of the transfer matrix method. While making the calculations a defect that may be caused by possible interlayer heterogeneity also must be taken into account. Numerical modeling made it possible to identify the stop zone and the defective mode. Intense fluorescence appears in the optical area of the wax layer under ultraviolet radiation, thus increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis.

Аннотация: First-principles calculations of the physical properties of ionic crystals are reviewed. Two markedly different approaches within the framework of the density functional theory are described. In one of them, the electron spectrum and wave functions are treated within the standard band picture based on the solution of Kohn-Sham equations. In the second approach, the total electron density of a crystal is represented as a super-position of the densities of individual ions. The problem of determining the electric polarization of a crystal is discussed for each approach. It is shown that it is the use of Bloch functions rather than the physics of the phenomenon that complicates the solution of this problem within the Kohn-Sham framework. The deformable and polarizable ion model is described in detail, and its application to calculating many properties of ionic crystals, including the lattice dynamics and structural stability of crystal phases, is discussed.

Аннотация: The magnetic, electronic, and polarization properties of the SrFeO3 and SrMnO3 compounds with a perovskite structure are calculated using the density functional theory in the bulk and thin-film states. A ferroelectric instability is found to be absent in the bulk state, and the polar mode is softened in the thin-film state of SrMnO3 in the presence of tensile stresses in the substrate. As a result, a polar phase with a polarization of 23 μC/cm2 appears, which agrees with experimental data. The study of the magnetic and electronic properties demonstrates the existence of G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in SrMnO3 and the appearance of a dielectric gap of about 1.5 eV in its thin film. A ferromagnetic phase with metallic conduction in both the bulk and thin-film states is detected in SrFeO3.

Аннотация: In recent years interest has been shown in crystals with the scheelite structure (point symmetry group 4/m) as promising materials for acoustooptic devices. However, nearly all the work done so far has been on the NaBi(MoO4)2 and PbMoO4 crystals. In this paper the authors give the results of a study of the elastic and acoustooptic properties of NaBi(WO4)2 and LiBi(MoO4)2 crystals from a series of isomorphic compounds with the scheelite structure carried out in order to determine the extent of the changes in the elastic and acoustooptic properties of this series of crystals when the structural elements are changed.

Аннотация: The homogeneous nematic layers in liquid crystal cells with treated surfaces are affected by orientational transitions in the electric, magnetic, or temperature fields. The liquid crystal structures formed on solid or liquid surfaces find limited application in identifying the liquid-crystal states by the textures observed in polarized light. The use of surfaces prepared from polymer solutions makes it possible to significantly broaden the range of application of the liquid crystal structures. We investigate the structures with the continuous transformation of the nematic director orientation from radial to planar, which were formed by the polycarbonate surface in the presence of different residual solvents. The structures contained the disclination lines that aligned either by a plate rubbed to provide the homogeneous planar orientation in the LC layer or by a magnetic field applied along the polycarbonate film during the structure formation. The orientational transitions caused by surface treatment, temperature, and electric or magnetic fields in these structures are observed. The comparison of temperature critical distance as well as electric and magnetic coherence lengths with equilibrium length calculated from the expression for the free energy of the nematic is performed. The electro-optical characteristics of the nematic structures are obtained.

Аннотация: The structure consisting of alternating uniaxial dielectric layers is known to produce reflection of the same polarization as the incident field; e.g., the right-hand elliptically polarized light preserves this right-handedness and ellipticity of polarization at reflection. The parameters permitting the properly-polarized reflectance to exceed 99% in a wide frequency range were considered both analytically and numerically. The mirror with tuned top-layer thickness is shown to have several times less polarization losses than the uniform mirror. The hybrid mirror with metallic bottom layer has a considerably reduced thickness.

Аннотация: A many-electron model of the energy band structure of VBO3 and of Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions is proposed with strong electron correlations taken into account. Experimental optical absorption spectra and data on the resistivity are discussed in the framework of the suggested model. Variation in the magnetic and electronic properties of VBO3 and Fe1 - xVxBO3 under high pressure is predicted. For VBO3, a Mott-Hubbard (insulator-metal) transition is expected in the high-pressure phase. In Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions, a nontrivial variation in the properties is predicted, leading to the appearance of a different magnetic state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The indirect-coupling model is used to analyze the exchange magnetic structure of Pb3Mn7O15 in the hexagonal setting. The ratios of manganese ions Mn4+/Mn3+ in each nonequivalent position are determined. Pb3(Mn0.95Ge0.05)7O15 and Pb3(Mn0.95Ga0.05)7O15 single crystals are grown by the solution–melt method in order to test the validity of the proposed model. The structural and magnetic properties of the single crystals are studied. The magnetic properties of the grown single crystals are compared with those of nominally pure Pb3Mn7O15. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The authors propose a way of reconstructing the Raman tensor by studying the angular dependences of the intensities of the Raman lines of unoriented microcrystals. The technique is verified using familiar calomel Hg2Cl2 crystals. It is shown that the lines on DUT-8 (Ni) crystals indicating phases with open and closed pores have different types of symmetries. The technique can be used to reconstruct the Raman tensor for any unoriented crystalline sample.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional ZrO2/SiO2 photonic crystal with a 4-n -pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) nematic defect layer was used to investigate the transmission spectra of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the liquid-crystal director at different angles of incidence. The spectra of the photonic crystal were shown to split into four polarized components T-ij at oblique incidence. When the incident angle increased, the bandgap edges and the defect modes shifted towards short wavelengths, while the amplitudes of the defect modes increased for the transverse magnetic polarization and decreased for the transverse electric polarization. The observed discrepancy between the defect mode amplitudes in the center and near the edges of the photonic bandgap was found to be related to the radiation losses inside the defect layer of a non-ideal photonic crystal. The simulated transmission spectra obtained using recurrence relations and taking into account the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Аннотация: Thermal atomic vibrations in the cubic phase of Cs//2NaNdCl//6 single crystal undergoing the structural phase transition (PT) at 138 K are investigated from the data of X-ray diffraction obtained at 278, 218, and 148 K. A significant anisotropy of thermal vibrations and their deviations from harmonic behavior are found for the Cl-atoms of the structure. These atoms displace from their equilibrium positions below PT due to the tilts of the octahedral groups.

Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials.
