Аннотация:
In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50
droplets
dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация:
Optical textures and appropriate orientational structures have been studied within
droplets
of chiral nematic dispersed in polymer assigning the homeotropic anchoring. The helix axis of the chiral structure inside
droplets
forms the bipolar configuration. The optical droplet textures were analysed in the unpolarised light, analyser switching-off scheme and in crossed polarisers. The twisted loop defect reveals itself convincingly in all schemes. Its appearance at the optical patterns of the chiral nematic
droplets
has been examined depending on their size and the aspect direction. The existence of the defect has been verified by the structural and optical calculations. The effect of an electric field on both the defect line shape and the orientational structure of chiral nematic has been studied.

Аннотация:
The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in
droplets
formed from the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the nematic director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24-34A degrees C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the nematic director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of similar to 0.5-3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in
droplets
3-15 A mu m in size after the forming field is switched off.

Аннотация:
We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as open resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the approplate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasibound states (QBSs) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBSs are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.

The nematic
droplets
with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the
droplets
formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical nematic
droplets
by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the
droplets
under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.

The polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal (LC) with the tilted surface anchoring has been studied. The droplet orientational structures with two point surface defects – boojums and the surface ring defect – are formed within the films. The director tilt angle α = 40° ± 4° at the droplet interface and LC surface anchoring strength Ws ~ 10–6 (J m−2) have been estimated. The bipolar axes within the studied

In this work, we investigated the behavior of cholesteric
droplets
with homeotropic boundary conditions experimentally and by computer simulations. Small
droplets
forming twisted radial structures were studied. We obtained two different paths of structural transformations under electric field in such
droplets
. The choice between these paths has probabilistic nature. The ratio between the two transition types was found to be sensitive to the elastic constants of LC forming the droplet. We suggest the principal approach for in situ estimation of ratios between elastic constants in cholesteric LCs deposited in polymer-dispersed LC material and discuss its strong and weak sides.

Аннотация:
The orientational transitions induced by electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring in liquid crystal cells based on the nematics with small or zero dielectric anisotropy Δε are considered. The type of director reorientation is shown to be independent of the sign of dielectric anisotropy and can be the same for the nematics with both negative and positive Δε. Besides, the orientational transition and corresponding switchable optical states do not depend on the Δε value and can be effectively realised even for the nematics with zero dielectric anisotropy.

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal composites have been a focus of study for a long time for their unique electro-optical properties and manufacturing by "bottom-up" techniques at large scales. In this paper, nematic liquid crystal oblate
droplets
with conical boundary conditions (CBCs) under the action of electric field were studied by computer simulations and polarized optical microscopy.
Droplets
with CBCs were shown to prefer an axial-bipolar structure, which combines a pair of boojums and circular disclinations on a surface. In contrast to
droplets
with degenerate planar boundary conditions (PBCs), hybridization of the two structure types in
droplets
with CBCs leads to a two-minima energy profile, resulting in an abrupt structure transition and bistable behavior of the system. The nature of the low-energy barrier in
droplets
with CBCs makes it highly sensitive to external stimuli, such as electric or magnetic fields, temperature, and light. In particular, the value of the electric field of the structure reorientation in
droplets
with CBCs was found to be a few times smaller than the one for
droplets
with PBCs, and the droplet state remained stable after switching off the voltage.

Cholesteric
droplets
under homeotropic boundary conditions demonstrate a rich variety of possible orientational structures. We have implemented electrically controlled switching of such
droplets
between two classes of stable states: i) structures with cylindrical cholesteric layers and ii) layer-like structures with one or more λ+1/2-disclinations. Structure relaxation after switching off the voltage proceeded via the fast (less than 1 s), the slow (more than 1 s), and the stabilization stages (~10 hours). We investigated intermediate long-lived metastable states occurring in the relaxation process and explained the formation of various structures in cholesteric
droplets
. The fast and the slow stages of relaxation were found to be sensitive to the voltage reduction regime. We have determined the combinations of droplet size and voltage reduction regimes leading to the two types of structures after relaxation.

Аннотация:
Uniaxially oriented films of polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals (PDChLC) is a new perspective material for multifunctional optoelectronic elements. The material presents a polymer film with an ensemble of elongated cholesteric
droplets
dispersed therein. Long axes of the
droplets
are oriented preferably uniaxially in the film plane. These films reveal a great anisotropy of the polarized light transparency, which depends strongly on the applied electric field, concentration of the chiral additive and shape of the
droplets
. We have found the optimal composition and
droplets
anisometry to produce the films, which can be switched by applied voltage between three different optical states: scattering light of any polarization, transmitting the one linear-polarized component only and transparency for light any polarization. A device employing these films may be used as a modulator of the whole of the light, as a modulator of one linearly polarized component only and as a light polarizer.

Light scattering by a monolayer of bipolar nematic
droplets
encapsulated in polymer film is examined both experimentally and theoretically. A method for the simulation of the angular distribution of scattered light is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations taking into account the director configuration within liquid crystal
droplets
and their bipolar axes orientation. The director configuration in nematic
droplets
is calculated using the relaxation method of the free energy minimization. The characteristics of the sample, including distribution of droplet sizes and shape anisometry, are measured in details. The experimental results and theoretical data agree closely with each other. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The studies of a number of systems treated in terms of an inhomogeneous (spatially separated) Fermi–Bose mixture with superconducting clusters or
droplets
of the order parameter in a host medium with unpaired normal states are reviewed. A spatially separated Fermi–Bose mixture is relevant to superconducting Ba-KBiO3 bismuth oxides.
Droplets
of the order parameter can occur in thin films of a dirty metal, described in the framework of the strongly attractive two-dimensional Hubbard model at a low electron density with a clearly pronounced diagonal disorder. The Bose–Einstein condensate
droplets
are formed in mixtures and dipole gases with an imbalance in the densities of the Fermi and Bose components. The Bose–Einstein condensate clusters also arise at the center or at the periphery of a magnetic trap involving spin-polarized Fermi gases. Exciton and plasmon collapsing
droplets
can emerge in the presence of the exciton–exciton or plasmon–plasmon interaction. The plasmon contribution to the charge screening in MgB2 leads to the formation of spatially modulated inhomogeneous structures. In metallic hydrogen and metal hydrides,
droplets
can be formed in shock-wave experiments at the boundary of the first-order phase transition between the metallic and molecular phases. In a spatially separated Fermi–Bose mixture arising in an Aharonov–Bohm interference ring with a superconducting bridge in a topologically nontrivial state, additional Fano resonances may appear and collapse due to the presence of edge Majorana modes in the system.

A numerical method has been developed for calculating the director configuration in ellipsoidal
droplets
of a nematic liquid crystal with strong tangential anchoring in a uniform magnetic field of an arbitrary orientation. A relation has been obtained for determining the Friedericksz threshold corresponding to the beginning of the reorientation of the central region of a droplet when the field is orthogonal to the biopolar axis. The effect of the breaking of the orthogonal condition on the threshold character of the orientation process is considered. The reorientation of the ensemble of bipolar
droplets
of the 5CB nematic liquid crystal dispersed in polyvinyl butyral has been studied by the magneto-optical method. Comparative analysis of calculation data and measured values of the threshold field has been performed.

We have studied the process of reorientation of 5CB nematic
droplets
dispersed in a stretched polyvinylbutyral film. Unlike [1,2], poles ofbipolar
droplets
have been observed to remain fixed. Reorientation starts at the centre of the droplet gradually progressing towards the droplet surface. It has been found that in samples containing large
droplets
, the light transmission dependence on the applied voltage has an oscillating behaviour. A qualitative explanation to this phenomenon can be given by using the anomal diffraction approach presented in [3]. An experimental technique is described to determine the Friedericksz threshold value in polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystals. The Friedericksz threshold value has been measured versus the size and the shape ofthe nematic
droplets
. The results obtained are analysed in terms oftheoretical models [1,2].

Аннотация:
Inverse mode of a novel electrooptical effect caused by the ionic modification of boundary conditions has been studied for liquid crystal
droplets
. We have considered the
droplets
of nematic 5CB doped with cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol. In the initial state the surface anchoring was normal on the whole interface due to the high concentration of homeotropic surfactant. Applied voltage results in the purification of a section of the interface from the surface-active cations thereby restoring here a tangential anchoring and stimulating the significant transformation of droplet structure. At that three different types of director field distribution can be realized within the same droplet. The proper textures of the droplet both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer are considered.
