Аннотация: The effect ofvolume bistability (VB) has recently been discovered and analysed [1] in thick (15 mem and more) layers ofpurposefully created ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) compositions. VB is a phenomenon that is mainly associated with the stereochemical nature of the FLC composition and is practically independent of the surface. We have studied the characteristics of planar-oriented PDFLC films obtained based on the above compositions. The effect of VB is shown to take place in large-size droplets. Unlike pure layers, VB in FLC droplets is of a reverse nature, i.e. an optical state is memorised that is opposite to the optical state corresponding to the polarity ofthe driving pulse. We discuss the features typical of VB in FLC droplets and make a comparison between the results obtained and the results ofsurface bistability studies in FLC droplets [2].

Аннотация: We have studied the process of reorientation of 5CB nematic droplets dispersed in a stretched polyvinylbutyral film. Unlike [1,2], poles ofbipolar droplets have been observed to remain fixed. Reorientation starts at the centre of the droplet gradually progressing towards the droplet surface. It has been found that in samples containing large droplets, the light transmission dependence on the applied voltage has an oscillating behaviour. A qualitative explanation to this phenomenon can be given by using the anomal diffraction approach presented in [3]. An experimental technique is described to determine the Friedericksz threshold value in polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystals. The Friedericksz threshold value has been measured versus the size and the shape ofthe nematic droplets. The results obtained are analysed in terms oftheoretical models [1,2].

Аннотация: Uniaxially oriented films of polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals (PDChLC) is a new perspective material for multifunctional optoelectronic elements. The material presents a polymer film with an ensemble of elongated cholesteric droplets dispersed therein. Long axes of the droplets are oriented preferably uniaxially in the film plane. These films reveal a great anisotropy of the polarized light transparency, which depends strongly on the applied electric field, concentration of the chiral additive and shape of the droplets. We have found the optimal composition and droplets anisometry to produce the films, which can be switched by applied voltage between three different optical states: scattering light of any polarization, transmitting the one linear-polarized component only and transparency for light any polarization. A device employing these films may be used as a modulator of the whole of the light, as a modulator of one linearly polarized component only and as a light polarizer.

Аннотация: We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as open resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the approplate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasibound states (QBSs) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBSs are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.

Аннотация: The transformation of the director configuration upon changing boundary conditions from planar to homeotropic for bipolar nematic droplets dispersed in a polymeric matrix was studied. The characteristic textural patterns are presented for droplets with different concentrations of homeotropic surfactants, and their orientational structure is identified. The scenario predicted earlier by G.E. Volovik and O.D. Lavrentovich (ZhETF 85, 1997 (1983)) for the transformation of orientational structure of nematic droplets from bipolar to radial, without the formation of additional disclinations, is revealed. It is shown that, by using the computational method of minimization of the director elastic-strain energy in the droplet bulk and by introducing the inhomogeneous boundary conditions, one can obtain orientational structures that are analogous to the observed ones.(C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The nematic droplets with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the droplets formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical nematic droplets by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the droplets under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.

Аннотация: The films of a polymer-dispersed nematic liquid crystal doped with an ionic surfactant were studied. The surface-anchoring modification effect caused by the local increase in the concentration of surface-active ions was observed at the polymer-liquid crystal interface under the action of an electric field. The modification of the boundary conditions leads to the transformation of the orientational structure of the nematic droplets and, as a result, to an appreciable change in their texture patterns and light-scattering efficiency at the interfaces. The monopolar director configurations (normal and curved) arising in the process of orientational structure transformations are considered and their typical textures are demonstrated. The possibility that the monopolar structure can be formed is theoretically substantiated by the computer simulation of the director field in a nematic droplet with the boundary conditions corresponding to the experiment.

Аннотация: A numerical method has been developed for calculating the director configuration in ellipsoidal droplets of a nematic liquid crystal with strong tangential anchoring in a uniform magnetic field of an arbitrary orientation. A relation has been obtained for determining the Friedericksz threshold corresponding to the beginning of the reorientation of the central region of a droplet when the field is orthogonal to the biopolar axis. The effect of the breaking of the orthogonal condition on the threshold character of the orientation process is considered. The reorientation of the ensemble of bipolar droplets of the 5CB nematic liquid crystal dispersed in polyvinyl butyral has been studied by the magneto-optical method. Comparative analysis of calculation data and measured values of the threshold field has been performed.

Аннотация: Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral nematics with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.

Аннотация: A computer model of reorientation processes in the bipolar nematic droplets of ellipsoidal form with strong tangential anchoring has been developed. The approximate formula to estimate the Friedericksz threshold has been obtained when the operating field (electric or magnetic) is orthogonal to the bipolar axis. The dependence of the threshold field on the droplet form has been considered. The reorientation of the bipolar droplets of 5CB nematic liquid crystal dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been studied by the magneto-optical method. The calculation data are in good agreement with measured values of the threshold field.

Аннотация: It was found that the effect of the ionic modification of anchoring in liquid-crystal droplets can be implemented in the inverse regime. Droplets of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl nematic doped with ionic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant were dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol and investigated. In the initial state, nematic droplets have a radial structure with homogeneous homeotropic anchoring typical of the surfactant used. In the presence of a de electric field, the boundary conditions become tangential in the surface area left by the cations. That results in the transformation of an orientational structure following by various scenarios. For the new states of nematic droplets, the distribution of the director field was analyzed and the corresponding textural patterns were numerically calculated.

Аннотация: A method is developed for modeling and computing the angular distribution of light scattered forward from a single-layer polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal (PDLC) film. The method is based on effective-medium approximation, anomalous diffraction approximation, and far-field single-scattering approximation. The angular distribution of forward-scattered light is analyzed for PDLC films with droplet size larger than the optical wavelength. The method can be used to study field- and temperature-induced phase transitions in LC droplets with cylindrical symmetry by measuring polarized scattered light intensity.

Аннотация: В работе изучены преобразования конфигурации директора в каплях нематика, вызванные тер- моиндуцированной модификацией граничных условий. Исследования проводились для нематиче- ского жидкого кристалла 5СВ (4-н-пентил-4-цианобифенил), который допировался сурфактан- том лецитином, а затем диспергировался в поливинилпирролидоне. Показано, что при нагре- вании граничные условия изменяются от планарных к гомеотропным, что приводит к транс- формации конфигурации директора в капле нематика. При охлаждении образца наблюдалось об- ратное изменение поверхностного сцепления от гомеотропного к планарному. В обоих случаях ориентационно-структурные превращения могут происходить по двум различным сценариям.The transformations of the director configuration within the nematic droplets induced by temperature modification of boundary conditions have been studied. Nematic liquid crystal 5CB (4-n-penthyl-4- cyanobiphenyl) doped with lecithin and dispersed in polyvinylpyrrolidone has been tested. As was shown, under heating the boundary conditions are changed from planar to homeotropic. It results in transformation of the director configuration in the nematic droplets. The inverse modification of the surface anchoring from homeotropic to planar has been observed at cooling. In both cases the transformations of orientational structure may occur in two different scenarios.
