Аннотация: 85 RM3(BO3)4 (R is the rare-earth element (Y, La–Lu) and M = Al, Sc, Cr, Fe, or Ga) compounds with the huntite structure have been analyzed. The analysis of the structures has made it possible to determine critical atomic displacements during the phase transition R32 ↔ P3121 and establish how these critical displacements can be controlled by varying the ionic radii. A tolerance factor has been derived and its threshold value below which the structure is stable in the R32 phase and above it, in the distorted P3121 phase, has been found. The formula has been tested on more than 30 huntite-family compounds and good agreement has been obtained. Therefore, it can be used with confidence to predict new compounds. At the moment, the tolerance factor has allowed us to establish previously unknown regularities in huntites.

Аннотация: The paper demonstrates possibilities of observation and thermal dependency study of the absorption lines as a co‐product of Raman spectroscopy study in SmFe3 (BO3)4 ferroborate. Raman spectra of the ferroborate were studied in a wide temperature range (T = 10÷300 K). Temperature‐dependent absorption lines sensitive to the magnetic phase transition have been observed in Raman spectra at two spectral ranges.

Аннотация: Multiferroic materials showing the coexistence of at least two ferroic orders ((anti)ferroelectric, (anti)ferromagnetic and (anti)ferroelasticity) are expected to find potential applications in many devices. Amongst these properties the coexistence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism is highly desired. Besides their coexistence, of utmost importance is a strong coupling between the two ferroic orders. In multiferroic materials, the coupling interaction between the different order parameters can produce additional functionalities. The application of multiferroics will make possible to significantly enlarge the functional possibilities of spintronics. Crystals of the RFe3(BO3)4 family (R is rare earth ion) with huntite mineral structure were reported to possess multiferroic features, demonstrating both structural and magnetic phase transitions [1 –4], where transition points may be varied by rare earth composition. In this work we used Raman spectroscopy to study Ho1–xNdxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) single crystals. Raman measurements on HoFe3(BO3) crystal were carried out at pressures up to 7 GPa and at temperatures up to 680 K by using a diamond anvil cell in order to determine the pressure–temperature phase diagram. From the changes in the Raman spectrum at the phase transition, the stability regions of phases I, II were investigated (Figure 1). After reaching 675 K and 2.5 GPa Raman spectra lines disappear and formation of a new crystalline form was discovered. This form persists ambient condition after removing high pressure and temperature.

Аннотация: The crystal structure of YAl3(BO3)4 is obtained by Rietveld refinement analysis in the present study. The dynamical properties are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental Raman and Infrared spectra are interpreted using the results of ab initio calculations within density functional theory. The phonon band gap in the Infrared spectrum is observed in both trigonal and hypothetical monoclinic structures of YAl3(BO3)4. The electronic band structure is studied theoretically, and the value of the band gap is obtained. It was found that the YAl3(BO3)4 is an indirect band gap dielectric material.

Аннотация: The Raman spectra of the TbFe2.5Ga0.5(BO3)4 single crystal in the temperature range from 8 to 400 K have been observed. The condensation and restoration of the soft modes have been found. The soft modes are associated with the structural phase transition from the R32 phase to the P3121 phase. The behavior of the hard modes confirms the structural phase transition close to the tricritical point. The temperature of the structural phase transition T1 = 33 K is established.

Аннотация: The Judd–Ofelt theory has been applied to analyze absorption spectra of Ho3+ ion in HoAl3(BO3)4 measured in spectral range 300–700 nm at room temperature. The Judd–Ofelt spectroscopic parameters have been determined as: Ω2 = 18.87 x 10 -20 cm2, Ω4 = 17.04 x 10 -20 cm2, Ω6 = 9.21 x 10 -20 cm2. These parameters have been used to calculate radiative lifetimes and branching ratios of the luminescence manifolds. Three luminescent bands were found in the spectral range 450–700 nm ascribed to transitions from the 5F5, (5F4, 5S2) and 3K8 states to the ground state 5I8. Experimental intensities of these luminescence transitions were compared with those calculated by using Judd–Ofelt theory and the system of kinetic equations for populations of starting luminescing states. Probabilities of radiativeless transitions were evaluated from this comparison.

Аннотация: Optical absorption spectra of YbAl3(BO3)4, TmAl3(BO3)4 and TbFe3(BO3)4 trigonal crystals have been studied in temperature range 2–300 K. Temperature behavior of absorption lines parameters has shown, that during some f-f transitions the local environment of rare earth ions undergo distortions, which are absent in the ground state.Оптические спектры поглощения YbAl3(BO3)4, TmAl3(BO3)4 и TbFe3(BO3)4 треугольные кристаллы были изученны в диапазоне температуры 2–300 K. Температурное поведение параметров линий поглощения показало, что во время некоторых f–f переходов, окружение редких земных ионов подвергается искажениям, которые отсутствуют в обычном состоянии.

Аннотация: Huntite-like borates are versatile and promising materials with wide range of applications in frequency conversion, UV light generation, lighting, displays, quantum information storage, and more, demonstrated by their various properties and uses in scientific research. In this work, EuAl3(BO3)4 powder was prepared through multi-stage solid-state reaction method using high-purity starting reagents: Eu2O3, Al2O3 and H3BO3, considering a 20 wt% excess of H3BO3 to compensate for B2O3 volatilization. Obtained samples undergo several treatments at varying temperatures and their phase purity is subsequently verified through powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The scanning electron microscopy reveals that resulting EuAl3(BO3)4 powder consists of granules exhibiting irregular morphologies with dimensions of 0.5–8 μm. The electronic band structure of EuAl3(BO3)4, calculated using the GGA PBE method, reveals f-states of Eu near 4 eV. These states do not produce emphasized peaks on simulated absorbance spectra. Using of DFT + U for the f-states of Eu pushed up f-bands above 6 eV and the charge transfer from p-O to d-Eu was obtained (Egdirect = 5.63 eV, Egindirect = 5.37 eV using Ueff = 4 eV). The variation of Ueff has a weak influence on the position of the bottom of the conduction band. The experimental bandgaps of EuAl3(BO3)4 crystalline powder, both direct and indirect, are found to be 3.96 and 3.67 eV, correspondingly. These values are lower than theoretical values what is associated with limitations of DFT calculations involving f electrons. The Raman spectrum of EuAl3(BO3)4 powder is discussed, detailing the contributions of different ions to specific spectral bands. Investigation of high-resolution luminescence spectra shows the possibility to estimate the content of defects by the testing the violation of the prohibition of ultranarrow 5D0 → 7F0 line that is forbidden in the ideal crystalline structure of trigonal EuAl3(BO3)4.

Аннотация: The condensation of two soft modes has been found when studying the Raman spectra of the solid solution HoFe2.5Ga0.5(BO3)4 in the temperature range from 7 to 350 K. The first high-temperature soft mode is associated with the structural phase transition from the R32 phase to the P3121 phase. The second soft mode is related to the reveal of the phonon-magnon interaction during magnetic ordering in the crystal. The temperatures of the structural phase transition T1 = 266 K and the magnetic phase transition T2 = 28 K are established. Experimentally interaction between the structural phase transition order parameter fluctuations and the magnetic order parameter fluctuations was found.

Аннотация: The Raman spectra of four crystals of TbFe3–xGax(BO3)4 solid solutions (x from 0 to 0.54) were studied in the temperature range from 8 to 350 K. The temperatures of structural phase transitions were determined. The observed spectral behavior is characteristic to condensation and restoration of soft modes. Soft modes are associated with a structural phase transition from the R32 phase to the P3121 phase. The Compositions-Temperature phase diagram was constructed.

Аннотация: The Raman spectra of four crystals of TbFe3–xGax(BO3)4 solid solutions (x from 0 to 0.54) were studied in the temperature range from 8 to 350 K. The temperatures of structural phase transitions were determined. The observed spectral behavior is characteristic to condensation and restoration of soft modes. Soft modes are associated with a structural phase transition from the R32 phase to the P3121 phase. The Compositions-Temperature phase diagram was constructed.

Аннотация: With the help of group theory analysis of absorption spectra of the transition H-3(6) - F-3(3) of Tm3+ ion in TmAl3(BO3)(4) crystal, measured at several temperatures from 1.8 till 293 K, it has been shown, that the local symmetry of the Tm3+ environment is C-3 and it decreases to C-1 at a low temperature. Effective selection rules and polarizations of lines at high enough temperatures (when the line-width is larger than the splitting in C-3 symmetry) have been obtained. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
