high-nitrogen steel -- austenite -- tensile test -- impact bending test -- ductile-to-brittle transition -- internal stresses -- fracture
Аннотация: The paper presents the results of tensile and impact bending tests of 17%Cr-19%Mn-0.53%N high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel in temperatures ranging from −196 to 20 °C. The steel microstructure and fracture surfaces were investigated using transmission and scanning electron microscopes, as well as X-ray diffraction analysis. The steel experiences a ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT); however, it possessed high tensile and impact strength characteristics, as well as the ductile fracture behavior at temperatures down to −114 °C. The correspondence between γ–ε microstructure and fracture surface morphologies was revealed after the tensile test at the temperature of −196 °C. In this case, the transgranular brittle and layered fracture surface was induced by ε-martensite formation. Under the impact bending test at −196 °C, the brittle intergranular fracture occurred at the elastic deflection stage without significant plastic strains, which preceded a failure due to the high internal stresses localized at the boundaries of the austenite grains. The stresses were induced by: (i) segregation of nitrogen atoms at the grain boundaries and in the near-boundary regions, (ii) quenching stresses, and (iii) reducing fcc lattice volume with the test temperature decrease and incorporation of nitrogen atoms into fcc austenite lattice. Anisotropy of residual stresses was revealed. This was manifested in the localization of elastic deformations of the fcc lattice and, consequently, the stress localization in <100>-oriented grains; this is suggested to be the reason of brittle cleavage fracture.

composite material -- fiberglass -- nuclear magnetic resonance -- magnetic resonance imaging -- water absorption
Аннотация: The results of a study of water absorption processes by samples of polymer composite materials (PCMs) based on fiberglass, subjected to low-speed impact with controlled impact energy and alternating temperature cycling are presented. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the distribution of absorbed water in the fiberglass structure is visualized and the dynamics of its accumulation in various areas of the sample are studied. It is found that mechanical impact leads to a nonuniform distribution of the absorbed water in the samples and a significant accumulation of free water in the areas of destruction and adjacent layers in the event of a violation of the integrity of the outer layer of the material. It is shown that cyclic alternating temperature effects do not lead to a noticeable change in the water absorption processes and are comparable in effect to mechanical nondestructive impacts. The results obtained using MRI are in close agreement with the data of traditional weight measurements, which shows the effectiveness of the method in diagnosing defects and mechanical damage to PCMs exposed to the humid environment.

Аннотация: Phase transitions in flexible metal-organic frameworks or soft porous crystals are mediated by low-frequency phonons or rigid-unit modes. The alteration of specific building blocks may change the lattice dynamics of these frameworks, which can influence the phase transition mechanism. In this work, the impact of building block substitution on the rigid-unit modes in flexible MIL-53 analogs with a winerack topology will be investigated via ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. First, the accuracy of the theoretical simulations is verified via experimental Raman measurements, which provide unique fingerprint vibrations in the terahertz range to characterize the phase transition. Following analysis of the low-frequency vibrations shows that there exists a set of universal rigid-unit modes inducing translations and/or rotations of the building blocks. The theoretical results demonstrate that linker substitutions have a large effect on the rigid-unit mode frequencies, whereas this is less so for inorganic chain substitutions. These findings may help to rationally tune the phonon frequencies in soft porous crystals.

Low-carbon microalloyed steel -- Helical rolling -- Microstructure -- Bainite -- Martensite–austenite constituent -- Impact toughness
Аннотация: Ferrite-bainite microstructures and impact toughness of the X65 low-carbon microalloyed steel were investigated after helical rolling at 1000, 920, 850, and 810 °C followed by continuous cooling in air. After helical rolling at 1000 °C, granular bainite with large areas of the massive-shape martensite-austenite constituent (d = 1.5 μm) and a high fraction of twinned martensite (d › 2.0 μm) were observed in the steel. This caused a decrease in impact energy at low test temperatures (for example, 70 J at –70°С). Lowering the helical rolling temperature contributed to a reduction of dimensions of both ferrite-bainite and martensite-austenite constituent areas, as well as the replacement of the latter by a slender type one and an improvement in fracture toughness at the low temperatures. The highest impact energy level (210 J at –70 °C) was achieved after helical rolling at 850 °C due to the formation of a homogeneous microstructure, which included dispersed ferrite grains, granular bainite and small fractions of the slender type martensite-austenite constituent (d = 0.1–0.7 μm). In this case, areas of twinned martensite were absent.

Tailoring the preferable orientation relationship and shape of α-FeSi2nanocrystals on Si(001): The impact of gold and the Si/Fe flux ratio, and the origin of α/Si boundaries / I. A. Tarasov, T. Gold -- Morphology -- Nanocrystals -- Silicides
Аннотация: The growth of α-FeSi2 nanocrystal ensembles on gold-activated and gold-free Si(001) surfaces at different Si/Fe flux ratios via molecular beam epitaxy is reported. The study reveals that the utilisation of gold as a catalyst regulates the preferable orientation relationship (OR) of the nanocrystals to silicon and their morphology at a given Si/Fe flux ratio. α-FeSi2 free-standing crystals with continuously tuned sizes from 30 nm up to several micrometres can be grown with an α(001)//Si(001) basic OR under gold-assisted conditions and an α(111)//Si(001) OR under gold-free growth conditions on a Si(001) surface. The preferred morphology of nanocrystals with a particular OR can be altered through changes to the Si/Fe flux ratio. Herein, the microstructure and basic OR between the silicide nanocrystals and the silicon substrate, and the formation of nanocrystal facets were analysed in detail with the help of microscopic techniques and simulation methods based on the analysis of near coincidence site (NCS) distributions at silicide/silicon interfaces. On the basis of the simulations used, we managed to reveal the nature of the interfaces observed for the main types of α-FeSi2 nanocrystals grown. Three types of interfaces typical for nanoplates with an α(001)//Si(001) basic OR, which are (i) stepped, (ii) stressed, and (iii) flat, are explained based on the tendency for the NCS density to increase at the interface. The results presented reveal the potential for the bottom-up fabrication of α-FeSi2 nanocrystals with tuned physical properties as potentially important contact materials and as building blocks for future nanoelectronic devices.

Impact diamonds -- lonsdaleite -- compressibility -- high-pressure -- diamond/lonsdailete biphases
Аннотация: For the first time, lonsdaleite-rich impact diamonds from one of the largest Popigai impact crater (Northern Siberia) with a high concentration of structural defects are investigated under hydrostatic compression up to 25 GPa. It is found that, depending on the nature of a sample, the bulk modulus for lonsdaleite experimentally obtained by X-ray diffraction in diamond-anvil cells is systematically lower and equal to 93.3–100.5% of the average values of the bulk moduli of a diamond matrix. Density functional theory calculations reveal possible coexistence of a number of diamond/lonsdaleite and twin diamond biphases. Among the different mutual configurations, separate inclusions of one lonsdaleite (001) plane per four diamond (111) demonstrate the lowest energy per carbon atom, suggesting a favorable formation of single-layer lonsdaleite (001) fragments inserted in the diamond matrix. Calculated formation energies and experimental diamond (311) and lonsdaleite (331) powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that all biphases could be formed under high-temperature, high-pressure conditions. Following the equation of states, the bulk modulus of the diamond (111)/lonsdaleite (001) biphase is the largest one among all bulk moduli, including pristine diamond and lonsdaleite.

Аннотация: Among the new coal technologies the burning of low-grade coal in the form of coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF) is of a great interest. The basis of CWSF is a highly concentrated coal-water slurry consisting of finely ground coal, water or other liquid and plasticizing agents. The development of CWSF technology is highly relevant for solving global problems of resource conservation and ecology. The study is dedicated to CWSF properties with respect to Kansk-Achinsk coal and water. This paper presents the results of the influence of CWSF's preliminary cavitation water treatment on the combustion dynamics of fuel, (including the features of the combustion temperature trends, delayed ignition time and time of complete combustion) and on its environmental characteristics. A rotary-type hydrodynamic oscillator at high angular velocity (10000 rpm) was used in supercavitation mode. It is shown that the technology of cavitation water treatment leads to a change in the dynamics of CWSF's combustion and to an additional decrease in NOx emissions by 1.6 times, CO2 by 1.3 times.

Аннотация: The ground and excited states of the pheromone molecules produced by xylophagous insects (the bark beetle Ips typographus L., the black fir sawyer beetle Monochamus urussovi Fisch., and the black pine sawyer M. galloprovincialis Oliv.) were modeled using a quantum chemical method utilizing DFT (density functional theory) with the B3LYP functional. The absorption wavelengths (energies) and dipole moments were calculated; the transitions of electrons from occupied to empty molecular orbitals were considered. The computed data were used to assess the stability of pheromone molecules exposed to environmental factors, such as solar radiation and humidity.

Аннотация: We report on abrupt changes in dc resistance and impedance of a diode with the Schottky barrier based on the Mn/SiO2/p-Si structure in a magnetic field. It was observed that at low temperatures the dc and ac resistances of the device change by a factor of more than 106 with an increase in a magnetic field to 200 mT. The strong effect of the magnetic field is observed only above the threshold forward bias across the diode. The ratios between ac and dc magnetoresistances can be tuned from almost zero to 108% by varying the bias. To explain the diversity of magnetotransport phenomena observed in the Mn/SiO2/p-Si structure, it is necessary to attract several mechanisms, which possibly work in different regions of the structure. The anomalously strong magnetotransport effects are attributed to the magnetic-field-dependent impact ionization in the bulk of a Si substrate. At the same time, the conditions for this process are specified by structure composition, which, in turn, affects the current through each structure region. The effect of magnetic field attributed to suppression of impact ionization via two mechanisms leads to an increase in the carrier energy required for initiation of impact ionization. The first mechanism is related to displacement of acceptor levels toward higher energies relative to the top of the valence band and the other mechanism is associated with the Lorentz forces affecting carrier trajectories between scatterings events. The estimated contributions of these two mechanisms are similar. The proposed structure is a good candidate for application in CMOS technology-compatible magnetic- and electric-field sensors and switching devices.

Аннотация: Changes in the properties of brown Kansk-Achinsk coal after exposure to microwaves have been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron magnetic resonance (EMR). The size composition of the samples has been investigated. The structure of coal has been found to be similar to the structure of multicomponent organic glass. The analysis of the changes in the EMR spectra of the coal samples (300 K, 83 K) exposed to microwaves has been found to gather information about the structural transformation taking place in the coal matter.

In order to expand the field of practical application of coal as a non-fuel material, understanding the nature of coal conductivity under various external influences is extremely important. At present the microwave technology of coal processing is developing in order to improve its quality (reduction of moisture, ash content, and better dispersion). In this paper the Kansko-Achinsk brown coal (ash content of 8%, humidity of 20%) after microwave drying for 60, 120 s in a microwave oven, at power of 850 W was investigated. The X-ray mapping of the samples surface was carried out using the SEM method to study the elemental composition of the coal organic part and its mineral components and the destruction of carbon particles in the microwave field (Hitachi TM- 30000 scanning electron microscope). The ESR method, which allows to investigate the relation between the structure and electronic properties of coal matter, was applied to study the effect of microwave drying on coal (X-band SE / X-2544 EMF spectrometer). The similarity of the coal electronic structure with the multicomponent organic structure glasses was found as a result of the analysis of the changes in the ESR spectra parameters of coal samples (300 K, 83 K) after microwave exposure. The mobility and redistribution of paramagnetic ions positions, in particular Fe3+ to more stable positions inside oxygen tetrahedra in the amorphous (organic) part of the coal is observed after microwave action. The electrons of the radical centers formed by the carbon atoms of the carbonyl, carboxyl, phenoxy groups and hydrocarbon fragments of various types are mobile. It has been shown that the water removal as a result of microwave exposure also has a profound effect on the concentration and nature of the radicals, i.e. on the electronic structure of the coals.

Аннотация: We analyze how the magnetic disorder affects the properties of the two-band s± and s++ models, which are the subject of discussions regarding iron-based superconductors and other multiband systems like MgB2. We show that there are several cases when the transition temperature Tc is not fully suppressed by magnetic impurities in contrast to the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, but a saturation of Tc takes place in the regime of strong disorder. These cases are: (1) the purely interband impurity scattering and (2) the unitary scattering limit. We show that in the former case the s± gap is preserved, while the s++ state transforms into the s± state with increasing magnetic disorder. For case (2), the gap structure remains intact.

Granular superconductor -- Josephson medium -- Effective field -- Magnetoresistance -- Magnetization hysteresis
Аннотация: The correlation between experimental magnetic field dependences of magnetoresistance and magnetization hysteresis in granular YBa2Cu3O7 is established. Within the proposed approach, magnetoresistance is assumed to be determined by the effective field in the intergrain boundaries the ensemble of which is considered to be a Josephson medium. The effective field in the intergrain medium can be written in the form B (eff)(H)=H-4 pi M(H)x alpha, where alpha is the parameter of averaged demagnetizing factors of grains and the degree of flux compression. A comparison of experimental magnetoresistance R(H) and magnetization M(H) hysteresis dependences obtained at different external magnetic field sweep rates yields the value alpha similar to 10, which is caused by the flux compression between grains. The proposed model describes well most of the features of the magnetoresistance hysteresis in granular high-T (C) superconductors.
