Аннотация: The spinel cobalt oxide Co3O4 is an antiferromagnetic semiconductor containing two non-equivalent Co2+ and Co3+ cobalt ions with different local environments and different magnetic moments. We have performed ab initio study and comparison of the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Co3O4 within GGA, GGA + U, and G0W0 approximations. GGA correctly predicts Co3O4 to be a semiconductor, but severely underestimates the bandgap. G0W0 approximations increase the bandgap indicating a better description of the cobalt localized d-states. The spectral weights of the bands near Fermi energy are about 0.5. Ab initio calculations confirm that the low-spin state of Co3+ ion arises due to the local environment and the crystal effect field. The investigation of the pressure dependencies of magnetic properties revealed the appearance of Co3+ ion abrupt transition from low-spin state to high-spin state under tensile pressure. This allows manipulating the spin state of Co3+ ions through the pressure or strain.

Аннотация: This paper presents the results of modernizing an ultrahigh-vacuum multifunctional apparatus that allows one to obtain semiconductor or metallic nanostructures in a single technological cycle and to investigate their optical and magneto-optical properties in a temperature range of 85–900 K. The capabilities of the developed system were demonstrated based on the example of studying the temperature dependence of the bulk Si permittivity via spectral ellipsometric measurements. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: This update includes the literature related to the inert anodes which were published in the past decade. The metallic anodes are widely regarded as promising candidates to replace the carbon anodes due to its attractive properties like good electrical conductivity, easy to manufacture and high resistance to high thermal shocks. The metals have been tested in pure state and alloy (binary, ternary) form. The oxide scale formed on the anode surface acts as a barrier between the electrolyte and the anode, which protects the anode from being dissolved. The layer of molten fluorides is formed between the scale and the metal anode after a certain time of polarization, and the oxide scale acts as a bipolar electrode. Metal like Cu is reduced at the internal side of the scale. This paper elaborates the effects of various parameters on the performance of the anode. Cu-based alloys (Cu – Ni – Fe and Cu – Al) have shown promising results and could perform well in low-temperature electrolytes. It has been well established that the Cu content in Cu – Ni – Fe and Cu – Al alloys plays a major role in the metal dissolution as the CuO/Cu2O scales formed on the outer layer act as a sacrificial one. The corrosion rate of an anode can be reduced by decreasing the operating temperature, which is possible by using the KF – AlF3 melts. The use of suspensions can increase the purity of the produced metal by stop-ping the anode products to come in contact with cathode metal. Many industries including RUSAL and ELYSIS are still conducting a considerable amount of research to develop an inert anode and are expecting to have a carbon-free cell in the nearest future.

Аннотация: We search for marginal Fermi-liquid behavior in the two-band Hubbard model with one narrow band. We consider the limit of low electron densities in the bands and strong intraband and interband Hubbard interactions. We analyze the influence of electron-polaron effects and other mechanisms for mass-enhancement (related to the momentum dependence of the self-energies) on the effective mass and scattering times of light and heavy components in the clean case (electron-electron scattering and no impurities). We find a tendency towards phase separation (towards negative partial compressibility of heavy particles) in the 3D case with a large mismatch between the densities of heavy and light bands in the strong coupling limit. We also find that for low temperatures and equal densities, the resistivity in a homogeneous state R(T) proportional to T-2 behaves as a Fermi-liquid in both 3D and 2D. For temperatures greater than the effective bandwidth for heavy electrons T W-h*, the coherence of the heavy component breaks down completely. The heavy particles move diffusively in the surrounding light particles. At the same time, light particles scatter on heavy particles as if on immobile (static) impurities. Under these conditions, the heavy component is marginal, while the light component is not. The resistivity approaches saturation for T W-h* in the 3D case. In 2D the resistivity has a maximum and a localization tail owing to weak-localization corrections of the Altshuler-Aronov type. This behavior of resistivity in 3D could be relevant for some uranium-based heavy-fermion compounds such as UNi2Al3 and in 2D, for some other mixed-valence compounds, possibly including layered manganites. We also consider briefly the superconductive (SC) instability in this model. The leading instability tends to p-wave pairing and is governed by an enhanced Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for SC at low electron densities. Аннотация: Experimental AFMR studies of crystalline PrFe3(BO3)4 over a wide frequency range of 10–143 GHz at a temperature of 4.2 K have been carried out. The high-frequency properties of praseodymium ferroborate are well described in terms of a model of a two-sublattice antiferromagnet with an “easy axis” anisotropy. An energy gap of 134.3 ± 0.5 GHz is determined and the magnitude of the effective magnetic anisotropy field is estimated to be 1.9 ± 0.1 kOe. An analysis indicates that the spin-orientational phase transition in this compound is a first order transition.

Аннотация: The effect of replacing Nd3+ ions with Dy3+ ions on the resonance properties of Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) is studied. The antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) method is used to detect an easy axis-easy plane magnetic spin-reorientation phase transition owing to competing exchange interactions of Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe, and the frequency-field dependence of the AFMR spectrum before and after the phase transition is studied. At 4.2 K, the detected resonance spectra in the H parallel to c direction are AFMR modes of iron, and their frequency-field dependences correspond to easy-axis (H 15 kOe) and easy-plane (H 16 kOe) magnetic structures with magnon excitation energy gaps of 77.2 and 100.3 GHz, respectively. The effective magnetic anisotropies responsible for these gaps are 0.7 and 1.2 kOe, respectively. Substitution by Dy3+ ions in crystalline Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) in the paramagnetic region produces an additional static internal field owing to polarization, which leads to a shift in the resonance field of the EPR absorption line and a change in the g-factor of the Fe3+ ions.
