Аннотация: The anisotropy of the electromechanical properties of SH-waves and Lamb waves in yttrium aluminum borates, which are nonmagnetic representatives of the RMe3(BO3)4 single crystals family (where R=Y, La-Lu; M=Fe, Al, Cr, Ga, Sc) with unique properties of magnetoelectrics and multiferroics, has been studied. In the process of the numerical simulation of the acoustic waves characteristics, the values of linear electromechanical constants of YAl3(BO3)4 single crystals, previously measured by ultrasonic pulse echo and quasi-static methods, have been used.Исследована анизотропия электромеханичеких характеристик SH-волн и волн Лэмба в иттриевых алюмоборатах, которые являются немагнитным представителем семейства монокри- сталлов RMe3(BO3)4 (где R=Y, La-Lu; M=Fe, Al, Cr, Ga, Sc) с уникальными свойствами магнитоэлектриков и мультиферроиков. При численном моделировании характеристик акустических волн использованы значения линейных электромеханических постоянных монокристаллов YAl3(BO3)4, измеренных ранее ультразвуковым эхо-импульсным и квазистатическим методами.

Аннотация: The AFMR spectra of the NdFe3(BO3)(4) crystal are measured in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. It is found that by the type of its magnetic anisotropy the compound is an easy-plane antiferromagnet with a weak anisotropy in the basal plane. The effective magnetic parameters are determined: anisotropy fields H-a1 = 1.14 kOe and H-a2 = 60 kOe and magnetic excitation gaps Delta v(1) = 101.9 GHz and Delta v(2) = 23.8 GHz. It is shown that commensurate-incommensurate phase transition causes a shift in resonance field and a considerable change in absorption line width. At temperatures below 4.2 K nonlinear regimes of AFMR excitation at low microwave power levels are observed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: An experimental device for quasi-static measurements of piezoelectric moduli dijk, based on the possibilities of precision variations in mechanical stresses with the device DMA 242 C in the frequency range 0-100 Hz has been developed. A special sample holder and a charge amplifier are used in the measuring scheme. The measurements of piezoelectric moduli values of trigonal piezoelectric single crystalls La3Ga5SiO14 (P321) and YAl3(BO3)4 (R32), as well as hexagonal ZnO (P63mc) have been carried out.

Аннотация: The capacity and the dielectric loss tangent of a Gd x Mn1–xSe (x ≤ 0.2) solid solution have been measured in the frequency range 1–300 kHz without a magnetic field and in a magnetic field of 8 kOe in the temperature range 100–450 K, and the magnetic moment of the solid solution has been measured in a field of 8.6 kOe. The magnetocapacity effect and the change in the magnetocapacity sign have been observed in room temperature in the paramagnetic region. A correlation of the changes in the dielectric permittivity and the magnetic susceptibility with temperature has been revealed. The magnetocapacity is described using the model with orbital electron ordering and the Maxwell–Wagner model.

Аннотация: Structural and magnetic properties of single crystals of DyMnO3 were investigated by neutron diffraction in order to study the peculiarities of 3d-4f interactions in this compound. Precise magnetic order and its detailed temperature evolution were determined using single crystal neutron diffraction. Elliptical cycloid on manganese subsystem below TCh = 19 K was confirmed, with temperature decrease the elipticity of the Mn magnetic structure reduces significantly, creating almost circular cycloid. Temperature evolution of the magnetic structure demonstrate specific hysteretic behavior. The results show a complex interplay between transition metal and rare earth magnetic sublattices leading to so-called “Mn- controlled” and “Dy- controlled” magnetic states. The strong and complicate 3d-4f interaction leads to the unusual very slow magnetic structure relaxation.

Аннотация: We present a resonant x-ray diffraction study of the magnetic order in NdFe3(BO3)4 and its coupling to applied electric fields. Our high-resolution measurements reveal two different coexisting magnetic phases, which can directly be controlled and manipulated by external electric fields. More specifically, the volume fraction of the collinear magnetic phase is found to strongly increase at the expense of helically ordered regions when an electric field is applied. These results confirm that the collinear magnetic phase is responsible for the ferroelectric polarization of NdFe3(BO3)4 and, more importantly, demonstrate that coexisting magnetic phases provide a route towards materials with a strong but yet hysteresis-free magnetoelectric response.

Аннотация: Various resonance modes were observed in the transmission spectra of rare-earth iron borates RFe 3(BO 3) 4 (R = Nd 3+, Sm 3+, Gd 3+) at the frequency range 100-600 GHz, which were attributed to collective magnetic excitations in the exchange coupled Fe- and R-subsystems, i.e. antiferromagnetic (Fe) resonance and electron transitions in the R-ions. Strong interaction of the Fe and R oscillations was revealed and theoretically analyzed taking into account feature of the R-ion ground state. Intensities of the coupled modes (contributions to magnetic permeability) strongly depend on a difference of Fe and R ions g-factors that allows defining the sign of the latter. In particular, an appreciable intensity of exchange (Nd) modes in NdFe 3(BO 3) 4 is caused by g Nd?,|| < 0 whereas in GdFe 3(BO 3) 4 with gGd ? gFe ? 2 the exchange (Gd) modes were hided due to compensation of Fe and Gd contributions. In SmFe 3(BO 3) 4, despite a negligible Sm g-factor, the Sm modes were clear observed due to their excitation via coupling with the Fe-subsystem. В© (2012) Trans Tech Publications.

Аннотация: In this work, the magnetoelectric response in a series of Dy1−xHoxMnO3 crystals with substitution x from 0 to 0.4 was investigated. The measurement results showed that, as x increases, a decrease in both the polarization Pa and the magnitude of the susceptibility of the inverse magnetoelectric effect αba is observed. In addition, the field Hb increases, at which the Pc → Pa transition is observed, and the temperature range of the existence of the magnetoelectric response decreases. Thus, an increase in the substitution x suppresses the magnetoelectric effect in this series of compounds. The measurement results also indirectly indicate the prolongation of the Pa state and, consequently, of the magnetic state with a cycloid lying in the ab-plane by an external electric field Ea.

Аннотация: X-ray analysis of the YFe3(BO3)4 single crystal revealed different behavior of parameters of the crystal cell with an increase in temperature from 25 to 500 K. The parameters a and b initially increase monotonically and then rise sharply in the range between 360 and 380 K, which corresponds to the structural phase transition. The parameter c initially decreases linearly upon heating and then begins to increase, passing through a minimum at 90 K. In the interval of 200–500 K the parameter c grows linearly and does not undergo anomalies at the structural phase transition. The results of Mössbauer measurements at 57Fe nuclei in the paramagnetic phase of YFe3(BO3)4 correlate well with the XRD data, but they do not separate the two structural states of iron ions Fe1 and Fe2 arising in the P3121 phase during the structural phase transition. The temperature of the magnetic phase transition TN = 39.42(16) K is established, below which the iron ions form a 3D magnetic order of the Heisenberg type. The calculated “Mössbauer” Debye temperature ΘM = 340(2) K turned out to be three times lower than the Debye temperature of the entire crystal lattice TD = 1020 K. Mössbauer data indicate a weak bonding between the helicoidal chains of iron and the rest of the crystal lattice.Рентгеновский анализ монокристалла YFe3(bo3-серии)4 выявил различие в поведении параметров кристаллической ячейки с увеличением температуры от 25 до 500 к. Параметры a и b сначала монотонно возрастают, а затем резко поднимется в диапазон между 360 и 380 К, что соответствует структурному фазовому переходу. Параметр c сначала линейно уменьшается при нагревании, а затем начинает возрастать, проходя через минимум при 90 K. В интервале 200-500 K параметр c растет линейно и не претерпевает аномалий при структурном фазовом переходе. Результаты Мёсбауэровской спектроскопии ядер 57Fe в парамагнитной фазе в YFe3(BO3)4 коррелируют с РСА, но они не разделяют двух структурных состояний ионов железа Fe1 и Fe2, возникающие в фазе P3121 в процессе структурного перехода. Установили температуру магнитного фазового перехода TN= 39.42(16) К, в результате которого ионы железа образуют 3D магнитный порядок типа Гейзенберга. Рассчитанная по Мёссбауэру Дебаевская температура QM= 340(2) K оказалась в три раза ниже температуры Дебая внутри кристаллической решетки TD= 1020 K. Данные Мёсбауэра указывают на слабую связь между геликоидальными цепочками железной и остальных кристаллических решеток.

Аннотация: Resonance modes that are due to magnetic excitations in the exchange-coupled subsystems of rare-earth ions (R = Nd3+, Sm3+, and Gd3+) and Fe3+ ions have been detected in submillimeter transmission spectra (0.1-0.6 THz) of RFe3(BO3)(4) iron borate-multiferroic single crystals. The strong interaction between spin oscillations of the Fe and R subsystems has been revealed, which determines the behavior of the modes depending on the anisotropy of the exchange splitting of the ground doublet of the R ion. It has been shown that the intensities of coupled modes (contributions to the magnetic permeability) depend strongly on the difference between the g factors of Fe and R ions. This dependence makes it possible to determine the sign of the latter g factor. In particular, a noticeable intensity of exchange Nd modes in NdFe3(BO3)(4) is due to an increase in their contribution at g(perpendicular to,parallel to)(Nd) 0, while in GdFe3(BO3)(4) with g(Gd) approximate to g(Fe) approximate to 2, the Fe and Gd contributions compensate each other and the exchange (Gd) mode is not observed. In spite of the weak interaction of Sm ions with the magnetic field, SmFe3(BO3)(4) exhibits resonance modes, which are attributed to the excitation of Sm ions through the Fe subsystem. Аннотация: The main elastic moduli and piezoelectric modulus have been measured in holmium alumoborate single crystals. The renormalization of the permittivity, piezoresponse, and sound velocities, driven by the nematic-like paramagnetic phase in the sample, is considered. A significant variability of the results is detected, which is caused, presumably, by the fact that, under the action of external fields, the motion trajectory of the nematic-like phase’s director depends on random defects of thermoelastic origin. It is shown that above 5 K, the temperature dependences of the studied parameters are well-described using holmium ion’s known ground multiplet spectrum, formed by the interaction with the crystal field. Changes in the C44-mode velocity in the sub-Kelvin temperature range are measured.

Аннотация: Velocity of bulk acoustic waves in base and rotated cuts have been measured by the ultrasonic pulse-echo method and values of CE ijkl and eijk in single crystals YAl3(BO3)4 have been calculated. The value of dijk piezoelectric modulus of these single crystals have been determined by quasistatic measurements, and εσ ij dielectric constants have been determined by the flat capacitor method. Experimental values of material constants have been applied for the study of anisotropy of acoustic waves characteristics in single crystals YAl3(BO3)4.Эхо-импульсным ультразвуковым методом измерены скорости объемных акустических волн в базовых и повернутых срезах и рассчитаны значения CE ijkl и eijk в монокристаллах YAl3(BO3)4. Величины пьезомодулей dijk этих монокристаллов определены квазистатическими измерениями, диэлектрических постоянных εσij — методом плоского конденсатора. Экспериментальные значения материальных постоянных применены для исследования анизотропии характеристик акустических волн в монокристаллах YAl3(BO3)4.

Аннотация: The goal of the study is to determine the value of magnetocapacitance under the substitution of lanthanum for bismuth in thin LaxBi1-xFeO3 films and to find out the effect of an external bias electric field on the magnetocapacitance effect. To solve this task, the dielectric permittivity, the magnetic permeability, and the loss tangent are measured in LaxBi1-xFeO3 films in magnetic fields of up to 8 kOe in the range of temperatures 100 K < T < 1000 K. Maxima of the permittivity and permeability at low temperatures and the dependence of the permeability on the prehistory of a sample are found. An increase in the magnetocapacitance due to the substitution of lanthanum for bismuth is observed. A giant enhancement of magnetocapacitance in an external electric bias field is revealed. These phenomena are attributed to the rearrangement of the domain structure. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The main features of the magnetic, magnetoelastic and record magnetoelectric properties of a HoAl3(BO3)4 alumoborate single crystal have been studied experimentally and theoretically. For magnetic field B||a we have observed a giant polarization ΔPba(Ba) ≈ -5240 μC/m2 induced by field of 9 T at T = 5 K. We have calculated the magnetic characteristics of HoAl3(BO3)4 in the framework of a crystal-field model. The parameters of the crystal-field in HoAl3(BO3)4 have been determined. Good agreement of experimental and calculated magnetization curves Mc,˄c(B) and temperature dependences of magnetization Mc,˄c(T) was achieved. The field and temperature dependences of the multipole moments have been calculated for interpretation of magnetostriction in HoAl3(BO3)4. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.Экспериментально и теоретически исследованы основные особенности магнитных и рекордных магнитоэлектрических свойств монокристалла алюмобората HoAl3(BO3)4. Обнаружена гигантская электрическая поляризация DPba(Ba) — –5240 мкКл/м2, индуцированная магнитным полем 9 Тл при Т = 5 К. Измеренные магнитные свойства и обнаруженные особенности проинтерпретированы в рамках единого теоретического подхода, который базируется на приближении молекулярного поля и расчетах в модели кристаллического поля для редкоземельного иона. Описаны экспериментальные температурные от 3 до 300 К и полевые до 9 Тл зависимости намагниченности. При интерпретации экспериментальных данных определены параметры кристаллического поля тригональной симметрии для иона Ho3+ в HoAl3(BO3)4.

Аннотация: A giant magnetoelectric polarization is found in HoAl3(BO3)(4). The polarization in transverse field geometry at 70 kOe reaches 3600 mu C/m(2), which is significantly higher than reported values of linear magnetoelectric or even multiferroic compounds. The magnetostrictive effect is also measured and compared with the magnetoelectricity. The results show that spin-lattice coupling in HoAl3(BO3)(4) is extremely strong and that the magnetic field causes a large polar distortion of the ionic positions in the unit cell.

Аннотация: In the substituted Nd1–xTbxFe3(BO3)4 (x=0.1 and x=0.2), possessing almost easy-axis magnetic structure at low temperatures, an unusual two-step transition in fields along the trigonal c axis was observed by magnetization and single-crystal neutron diffraction studies. At the first step, only part of the Tb Ising-type moments flip to the c axis, which is accompanied by a significant deviation of the antiferromagnetic Fe spins from the c axis. At the second step, the remaining Tb moments flip and the Fe moments flop into the basal plane. The observed evolution is qualitatively explained by a model assuming small deviations of Tb moments from the trigonal axis due to local environment distortions, which leads to nonequivalence of the Tb ions with respect to effective Tb-Fe exchange and external field. Thus, an intrinsic “hidden” instability of the magnetic system in the magnetic field occurs.
