It is shown that chromium ions introduced into the sample occupy yttrium ion sites in the crystal structure. The parameters of the spin Hamiltonian of Cr3+ ions in the YАl3(ВО3)4 matrix are determined at different temperatures. The sign of the fine structure parameter D allows the conclusion that the chromium ions in YА13(ВО3)4 single crystals have an easy-plane anisotropy.

Аннотация: The capacity and the dielectric loss tangent of a Gd x Mn1–xSe (x ≤ 0.2) solid solution have been measured in the frequency range 1–300 kHz without a magnetic field and in a magnetic field of 8 kOe in the temperature range 100–450 K, and the magnetic moment of the solid solution has been measured in a field of 8.6 kOe. The magnetocapacity effect and the change in the magnetocapacity sign have been observed in room temperature in the paramagnetic region. A correlation of the changes in the dielectric permittivity and the magnetic susceptibility with temperature has been revealed. The magnetocapacity is described using the model with orbital electron ordering and the Maxwell–Wagner model.

Аннотация: High-resolution polarized optical absorption spectra of PrFe3(BO3)(4) in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases are reported. The measured energies of the crystal-field (CF) levels within the 4f(2) configuration of Pr3+ in the paramagnetic PrFe3(BO3)(4) are described by the CF model that involves the 4f(2)/4f5d and 4f(2)/4f6p configuration interactions. Ordering of Fe spins along the crystalline c axis below T-N=32 K is confirmed by the analysis of the spectra of Er3+ introduced as a probe into PrFe3(BO3)(4). To account for the observed changes in the optical spectra of Pr3+ at temperatures below T-N, in particular, for the shift of the CF levels, splitting of the CF doublets, and the appearance of forbidden lines, the Pr-Fe exchange Hamiltonian defined by seven parameters is considered. The theoretical approach has been tested by calculating the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility. A good agreement between theory and optical and magnetic experimental data is found demonstrating the validity of the model used. The obtained results confirm that the model of the iron dimers inside the spiral chains of Fe3+(O2-)(6) octahedrons introduced by us earlier for NdFe3(BO3)(4) and modified in the present work may serve as a basis for analyzing the low-temperature properties of other rare-earth iron borates.

Аннотация: In the first part of this paper we outline the state of the art in the field of magnetic nanoparticles in oxide glasses. We describe the theoretical background of two complementary techniques used for the studies of the state of paramagnetic ions, clusters and magnetic particles in a diamagnetic matrix, viz., magnetooptical Faraday rotation (FR) and electron magnetic resonance (EMIR) and we overview previous results obtained with these techniques for several glass systems. In the second part, we highlight the case of potassium-alumina-borate glasses - a glassy system where doping with paramagnetic oxides results in formation of magnetic particles at very low contents of paramagnetic additions: Fe(2)O(3) and MnO. In the special case when the ratio of the iron and manganese oxides in the charge is 3/2, magnetic nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of manganese ferrite are formed already at the first stage of the glass preparation. After thermal treatment all glasses show FR and EMR spectra attesting to the presence of superparamagnetic nanoparticles, characterized by relatively broad size and shape distributions. The formation of magnetic nanoparticles confers to these glasses magnetic and magnetooptical properties typical of magnetically ordered substances. At the same time, the glasses remain transparent in a part of the visible and near infrared spectral range and display a high FR value. Аннотация: The characteristic features of the critical spin dynamics of the cubic ferrimagnets Y3Fe5O12 and MnFe2O4 in the exchange temperature region above T(c) have been studied. The magnetic-dipole relaxation of the uniform magnetization of these ferrimagnets is shown to be suppressed. The relaxation channel due to the local uniaxial anisotropy, with a new temperature dependence, is the dominant channel.
