Аннотация: Tamm plasmon polariton (TPP) is an electromagnetic state at the interface of a metal and a dielectric Bragg mirror with slow propagation along the interface [1] similar to the Tamm state of electron localized at a semiconductor or metal surface. Generally the TPP supports both TE- and TM-polarizations. It can be utilized for narrowband filters, sensors, absorbers, emitters and polariton lasers. We consider a one-dimensional photonic crystal conju- gated with an opaque metal layer (Fig. 1(a)). Although made of isotropic materials the photonic crystal differentiates polarizations. At Brewster angle it becomes transparent for TM-waves (mag- netic field orthogonal to the incidence plane) and still maintains opaqueness for TE-waves. So, Brewster-tilted TPP is TE-polarized only. For the purpose of the TPP energy release into TM- wave we introduce a thin anisotropic layer at the interface. Then we can freely rotate the sample in the plane of the layers or equivalently rotate the incident light beam along the Brewster-angled cone. The azimuthal angle φ between the incidence plane and the anisotropic layer optical axis governs the Q factor of the Brewster-tilted TPP by coupling to the TM-wave relaxation channel (Fig. 1(b)). At φ = 0◦ the Brewster-tilted TPP can be considered as a symmetry-protected bound state in the continuum [2]. This keeps valid for deviations from Brewster angle until TM-stopband is narrow. The considered layered structure is easier in fabrication compared to previously proposed in [3], which facilitates numerous applications.

Аннотация: A broadband Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between the Bragg mirror and a thin metallic layer has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. The possibility of a localized state formation has been demonstrated and energy coefficients at the Tamm plasmon polariton wavelength have been predicted in the framework of the coupled mode theory. The metallic layer material and thickness corresponding to the maximum coupling between the incident radiation and the Tamm plasmon polariton has been determined. Experimental reflectance and transmittance spectra of the structure consisting of the Bragg mirror and chromium layers of different thicknesses have been measured. The analysis of the energy spectra shows the existence of the wavelength range with the near-unity absorption coefficient inside the Bragg mirror bandgap. The use of chromium as a metal results in the broadband Tamm plasmon polariton excitation. It is demonstrated that the experimental data is in a good agreement with the calculation.

Аннотация: We consider Tamm plasmon polariton in a subwavelength grating patterned on top of a Bragg reflector. We demonstrate dynamic control of the phase and amplitude of a plane wave reflected from such metagrating due to resonant coupling with the Tamm plasmon polariton. The tunability of the phase and amplitude of the reflected wave arises from modulation of the refractive index of a transparent conductive oxide layer by applying the bias voltage. The electrical switching of diffracted beams of the ±1st order is shown. The possibility of doubling the angular resolution of beam steering by using asymmetric reflected phase distribution with integer and half-integer periods of the metagrating is demonstrated.

Аннотация: We consider light absorption in a germanium grating placed on top of photonic-crystalline substrate. Such a system supports an optical Tamm state decoupled from the continuous spectrum with its frequency within the photonic band gap. We have demonstrated that application of the Tamm state makes in possible to engineer extremely narrow absorber which provides a 100 % absorption in a semiconductor grating in the critical coupling regime. The proposed design may be used at both normal and oblique incidence at the telecom wavelength.

Аннотация: Two schemes of excitation of a Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity have been investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory. The parameters of the structure have been determined, which correspond to the critical coupling of the incident field with a Tamm plasmon polariton and, consequently, ensure the total absorption of the incident radiation by the structure. It has been established that the spectral width of the absorption line depends on the scheme of Tamm plasmon polariton excitation and the parameters of a nanocomposite film. The features of field localization at the Tamm plasmon polariton frequency for different excitation schemes have been examined. It has been demonstrated that such media can be used as narrowband absorbers based on Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity.

Аннотация: Hybrid modes originating from the coupling of the Tamm and surface plasmon polaritons excited in a one-dimensional resonant photonic structure are demonstrated. The structure represents a photonic crystal bounded by a nanocomposite film consisting of a transparent matrix and silver nanoparticles uniformly distributed over its volume. In comparison with structures on planar metal films the volume concentration and shape of nanoparticles are of great help in configuring the hybrid mode properties, including their wavelength and splitting. Also the radiation incidence angle variation opens the possibility of fine-tuning the energy spectra of the structure. We demonstrate the high-sensitivity of optical sensors based on the resonant photonic structure.

Аннотация: The possibility of using a hyperbolic metamaterial to form conventional and epsilon-near-zero Tamm plasmon polaritons in the near-infrared and visible spectral ranges is demonstrated. The spectral properties of the hyperbolic metamaterial are investigated in the framework of the effective medium theory and confirmed by the transfer matrix method. It is found that at the oblique incidence of light onto a structure, the I-type hyperbolic metamaterial can be implemented, while II-type cannot. The sensitivity of the epsilon-near-zero wavelength to the variation in the angle of light incidence for TE and TM waves is demonstrated. It is shown that both the high-quality and broadband Tamm plasmon polaritons are excited in the investigated structures.

Аннотация: The effect of the shape of the nanoparticles and the polarization of incident light on the surface current density and the efficiency of an organic solar cell based on the Tamm plasmon polariton is investigated. In the cases of both elongated and flattened nanoparticles, it is shown that the efficiency of such a solar cell is increased when the electric field vector is parallel to the largest axis of the spheroid.

Аннотация: The influence of the volume fraction of plasmonic nanoparticles on the efficiency of the Tamm-plasmon-polariton-based organic solar cell is investigated in the framework of temporal coupled mode theory and confirmed by the transfer matrix method. It is shown that, unlike a conventional plasmonic solar cell, in which the efficiency is directly proportional to the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the photosensitive layer, the efficiency of the proposed solar cell reaches the highest value at low volume fractions. This effect is explained by the fact that at these volume fractions, the critical coupling condition of the incident field with the Tamm plasmon polariton is fulfilled. Thus, for the incoming radiation range of 350 to 500 nm, a maximal cell efficiency of 28% is achieved with a volume fraction of nanoparticles equal to 10%. Additionally, the optical properties of the photosensitive layer are compared for the cases of determining its complex refractive index by effective medium theory and the S-parameter retrieval method. A good agreement between the results is demonstrated, which encourages the use of the effective medium theory for preliminary calculations.
