Аннотация: The wide use of pesticides in agriculture has caused uncontrolled distribution of these chemicals in the environment, calling for the development and investigation of new environmentally friendly formulations, which would reduce human impact on nature. In the present study, the metribuzin (MET), tribenuron-methyl (TBM), and fenoxaprop-P-ethyl (FPE) herbicides were encapsulated in microparticles of degradable microbial polymers – polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) – of two types – poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate [P(3HB/3HV)]. The use of P(3HB) resulted in higher yields of microparticles (63% to 79%) and larger sizes of the particles, whose average diameter was 0.60 ± 0.06–0.75 ± 0.11 μm, while the average diameter of copolymer particles varied between 0.43 ± 0.12 and 0.55 ± 0.05 μm. Encapsulation efficiency was rather determined by the type of herbicide and its solubility, varying from 24.7% to 48.2%. In vitro herbicide release from microparticles to water was affected by herbicide solubility and PHA chemical composition. The readily soluble MET showed the highest release rate, and over 30 days, 64% and 78% of the encapsulated amounts were released from P(3HB) and P(3HB/3HV) microparticles, respectively. High herbicidal activity of microparticles loaded with metribuzin and tribenuron-methyl was demonstrated in the laboratory stands of the Elsholtzia ciliata weed plant.

Аннотация: A setup and a technique for optical measurements intended for evaluating the content of unbound compounds in an epoxy polymer are described. The principle of operation of the setup is based on measurements of the spectra of absorption of infrared (IR) radiation by condensed products of evaporation of unbound components. The needed mass of a sample is about 0.01 g. The results of measurements of the IR radiation absorption as a function of the concentrations of the mixture components-ED-22 epoxy resin, isomethyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (hardener), and a cure promoter (N integral D-606/2)-are presented. The relative content of chemically unbound components in the structure of a polymer matrix is evaluated as a function of the hardener concentration, thus allowing determination of the stoichiometric ratio of the initial components of an epoxy mixture. The obtained results are compared to those obtained by the extraction method.

Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация: The present study describes production of bacterial cellulose composites with silver nanoparticles and antibiotics and compares their properties. Bacterial cellulose (BC) composites synthesized in the culture of the strain of acetic acid bacterium Komagataeibacter xylinus VKPM B-12068 with silver nanoparticles, BC/AgNps, were produced hydrothermally, under different AgNO3 concentrations (0.0001, 0.001, and 0.01 M) in the reaction medium. The presence of silver in the BC/AgNp composites was confirmed by elemental analysis conducted using scanning electron microscopy with a system of X-ray spectral analysis. Analysis showed that the average atomic number of silver particles in composite samples depended on the concentration of AgNO3: as AgNO3 concentration in the reaction solution was increased, silver content in the composites increased from 0.044 to 0.37 mg/cm2. BC composites with amikacin and ceftriaxone were prepared by immersing dry BC films in solutions containing different concentrations of the antibiotics. The surface structure and properties and physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of composites were investigated using SEM, DSC, X-ray analysis, the system for measuring water contact angles, and electromechanical tensile testing machine. The disk-diffusion method and the shake-flask culture method used in this study showed that all experimental composites had pronounced antibacterial activity against E. coli, Ps. eruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and St. aureus, and the BC/antibiotic composites were more active than BC/AgNp ones; S. aureus was the most susceptible to the effect of BC composites. No potential cytotoxicity was detected in any of the BC/AgNp composites in the NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cell culture, in contrast to the BC/antibiotic composites. These results suggest that BC composites constructed in the present study hold promise as dressings for managing wounds, including contaminated ones.

Аннотация: The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in droplets formed from the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the nematic director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24-34A degrees C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the nematic director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of similar to 0.5-3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in droplets 3-15 A mu m in size after the forming field is switched off.

Аннотация: Films from biodegradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate are treated with chemical reagents to improve their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Two approaches are tested: a single treatment with alkali, acids, oxidizing or reducing agents, and a step-by step treatment of the alkali pre-activated surface of polymer films with bromine water and amino-compounds (ammonia or triethylamine). The maximal level of hydrophilicity (the lowest water contact angle and the highest polar component of the surface free energy) is registered after a single treatment with NaOH and after the step-by-step treatment. These samples also showed the best adhesion of mouse fibroblasts of NIH 3T3 line on the film surface. So, the proposed methods can be used to enhance hydropilicity and biocompatibility of biopolymer surface.

Аннотация: We present novel polyethylene (PE) composites for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding application. They are based on cobalt modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) produced via in situ polymerization of ethylene, with the Ti-Ziegler–Natta catalyst preliminarily immobilized on Co/MWCNT hybrids. The electromagnetic properties of the composites were tuned by varying the filler loading and Co:MWCNT ratio. The microstructure of the composites and electromagnetic absorption process were carefully characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance and vector network analysis. The electromagnetic wave absorbing properties of the nanocomposite were investigated in the 10 MHz−18 GHz frequency range revealing that the EMI absorption properties can be tuned by varying the Co:MWCNT weight ratio in the filler. Interestingly, the Co/MWCNT-PE composite with a total filler and Co loading of only 12 and 1.7 wt%, respectively, showed extremely high reflection loss (RL) of −55 dB. More importantly, an effective bandwidth of 12.8–17.8 GHz (RL below −10 dB) was achieved for a matching thickness of only 1.5 mm. The specific RL value (RL/filler loading) of the composite was superior in comparison with the previously reported nanostructured carbon materials. The highly effective absorbing properties of Co/MWCNT-PE composites are explained primarily by the unprecedented uniform filler distribution in the polyethylene as well as by the synergistic effect of MWCNTs and Co nanoparticles. This approach thus offered an effective strategy to design cost-effective, lightweight and flexible EMI shielding materials with tunable dielectric and magnetic performance.

Аннотация: The objective of this study was to produce and characterize collagen conjugated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) microparticles. The double emulsion solvent evaporation technique was used to fabricate biopolymer microparticles. Alkaline hydrolysis method was used for carboxylation of P3HB microparticles followed by collagen (type I) conjugation using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dime-thylaminopropyl) carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide cross linkers. The successful chemical modification of P3HB-MP surface was evidenced by XPS analysis and FTIR spectroscopy, confirming an increase in the number of carboxyl groups and covalent bonding of collagen on the surface of functionalized P3HB microparticles (Col-P3HB-MPs). The amount of collagen present on Col-P3HB-MPs microparticles was quantified by the Lowry method. The average diameter and zeta-potential of microparticles were found to be dependent upon the method of preparation. The absence of cytotoxicity of modified Col-P3HB-MPs to fibroblast NIH 3T3 cells in vitro was corroborated by results of MTT assay. Staining with the fluorescent dye showed enhanced adhesion of fibroblasts onto Col-P3HB-MPs compared to the unmodified P3HB-MPs.
