    Nonlinear photonic crystals of strontium tetraborate [Text] / A. S. Aleksandrovsky // International Workshop "Nonlinear photonics: theory, materials, applications" (NLP-2011) : Book of Abstracts. - 2011. - P40
Аннотация: Structural, optical and nonlinear optical properties of strontium tetraborate (SBO) single crystals are summarized. SBO presently is not considered to be a ferroelectric, however, domain structures consisting of alternating oppositely poled domains, strongly resembling those present in such ferroelectrics as potassium titanyl phosphate and lithium niobate, were recently discovered in this crystal. Such geometrical properties as orientation, size, and degree of randomization, of these domain structures are described. The problem of origin of domain structures in SBO is considered, as well as the possibility of their characteristics control. From the point of view of optical properties, domain-structured samples of strontium tetraborate are classified as randomized nonlinear photonic crystals. Comparative study of nonlinear diffraction and random quasi-phase-matching of nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses in these nonlinear photonic crystals is presented. Prospects of creation of nonlinear optical converters of laser radiation into VUV spectral region based on domain structured strontium tetraborate are discussed.

Аннотация: The properties of NPC structures in strontium tetraborate are analyzed. Different types of NPC structures are revealed that possess different nonlinear properties, and their spectral dependences of frequency conversion efficiency are calculated and compared. Experimental study of these structures is reported for the process of doubling of the second harmonic of fs Ti:S laser. Tuning of generated radiation is obtained in the range 187.5 - 232.5 nm, with extreme insensitivity to the angular orientation of NPC. Behavior of tuning curve along investigated fundamental wave range is similar in all studied samples, but efficiency obtained depends on the type of structure. Conversion efficiency andspectral quality of generated radiation is experimentally shown to grow better when using NPC with improved structure. Prospects of VUV converter on a single NPC are discussed. NPCs of SBO are demonstrated to be useful for autocorrelation diagnostics both in random QPM geometry and in the geometry of nonlinear diffraction from virtual beam.

Аннотация: Random quasi-phase-matched frequency doubling of fs pulses to the deep UV was obtained in 1D nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) of strontium tetraborate. Tuning range of generated radiation is from 187.5 to 215 nm. The spectrum of generated radiation consists from series of peaks with the width of order of 1 A. These peaks are the manifestation of the NPC band structure. Using fs oscillator as the fundamental radiation source, maximum average power of generated radiation is of order 1 ?W, the enhancement factor with respect to monodomain sample being of order of several hundred. The red rotational shift of NPC band structure is experimentally demonstrated. © 2011 SPIE.

Аннотация: The crystallization of SrO center dot 2B(2)O(3) glasses has been studied. Four different crystalline formations were found to form simultaneously and independently on the glass surface: stable alpha-SrB4O7 crystals and metastable crystalline forms (beta-SrB4O7, Sr4B14O25, and spherulites (presumably, mixtures of crystalline phases)). The ranges of thermal stability of the newly formed metastable phases have been established using thermal analysis.

Аннотация: The asymmetric unit of the title compound, beta-SrB4O7, contains five Sr atoms (three located on a threefold rotation axis), twelve B and 21 O atoms. The structure is made up from BO3 triangles and BO4 tetrahedra in a 1:1 ratio. Pairs of BO3 triangles are linked to BO4 tetrahedra via common corners, forming chains. These chains are further linked to adjacent chains through corner-sharing, leading to a three-dimensional framework with channels running parallel to [001]. The Sr2+ ions reside in the channels and exhibit strongly distorted polyhedra The density of the beta-polymorph is considerably lower than that of beta-SrB4O7, which is constructed solely from BO4 tetrahedra.

Аннотация: Random nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) structures formed by as-grown domains in a non-ferroelectric strontium tetraborate (SBO) are investigated. The domain shape and orientation are similar to those in ferroelectric KTP. Nonlinear diffraction is the simplest way to detect, evaluate and characterize these structures. Reciprocal superlattice vectors spectra of NPC in SBO are very wide and enable broadband efficiency enhancement of nonlinear optical processes. Second harmonic (SH) generation of femtosecond Ti:sapphire oscillator radiation with 1.9% efficiency is obtained using nonlinear diffraction geometry. Random quasi phase matched generation at the wavelengths of fourth harmonic of Ti:sapphire laser is obtained with average power up to 1 ?W. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Аннотация: Strontium tetraborate (SBO) is attractive for nonlinear optics of short-wavelength range including VUV due to its transparency window [1]. Nonlinear coefficients of SBO are the largest among crystals transparent below 270 nm. Angular phase matching is, however, absent in SBO, and the only possibility of conversion enhancement is to employ self-organized random nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) structures discovered in SBO. These NPC are capable of two limiting cases of phase matching, namely, nonlinear diffraction (NLD) and random quasi phase matching (RQPM). NLD allows detection of NPCs and testing their reciprocal superlattice vectors (RSV) spectra via variation of the incidence angle. NLD conversion of broadband fs pulses of modest power from Ti:S oscillator results in 1.9% efficiency, being, to our knowledge, the best result obtained for this type of phase matching. RSV spectrum is wide enough to ensure NLD tunability from 355 to 510 nm. This spectrum is not flat, but the narrowing of the generated radiation spectrum due to non-flatness is rather modest.

Аннотация: Radiation in the range 187.5-215 nm was generated via random quasi-phase-matched frequency doubling of femtosecond laser pulses in nonlinear photonic crystals of strontium tetraborate. Abroad spectrum of fundamental radiation favors the probing of the nonlinear photonic crystal band structure. The red shift of the band structure upon the fundamental wave-vector rotation was observed. No principal limitations of the tuning range at its shorter wavelength boundary from the nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) material are found. Calculation shows that the NPC structure enables enhancement of nonlinear generation in the vacuum ultraviolet.

Аннотация: The Sr1-xSmxTiO3 (х = 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.2) strontium titanate solid solutions were prepared from oxides and carbonates using a conventional ceramic technology based on the mechanochemical activation. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the synthesized compounds were measured in the temperature range from 300 to 800 K. We found that the properties of the samples significantly depend on the preliminary mechanochemical activation. The thermoelectric power factor attains maximum value in the hydrogen reduced samples with concentration of х = 0.05 and 0.075 obtained from nanoparticles: 5.5 μW/(cm · K2) for Sr0.95Sm0.05TiO3 (580 K) and 4.10 μW/(cm · K2) for Sr0.925Sm0.075TiO3 (650 K). An increase in the annealing temperature of mechanically activated samples leads to an even greater increase in electrical conductivity and power factor: 9.2 μW/(cm · K2) for Sr0.925Sm0.075TiO3 (650 K).

It is shown that the creation of such heterostructures affects both optical and photocatalytic properties. Аннотация: A number of calcium bismuthates were synthesized (25 to 50 mol% in Ca) and characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, XPS and DRS techniques; the latter provided an estimate of the bandgap energies (Ebg=2.41 to 3.29 eV) via Tauc plots for indirect transitions, whereas XPS established the potentials (vs NHE) of their respective valence bands (and thus the conduction bands). Linear correlations existed between EVB/ECB and Ebg that when compared with those of strontium bismuthates (reported earlier) showed that differences in energies at Ebg=0 eV are related to the difference in the absolute electronegativities of Ca and Sr, from which the following empirical phenomenological rule is postulated: replacing one alkaline earth metal in bismuthates by another causes the points of intersection of the linear correlations ECB(Ebg) and EVB(Ebg) to be displaced by an amount equal to twice the difference in absolute electronegativities of these metals.

Аннотация: The spectral dependences of X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and the field dependences of XMCD near the K edge of Mn and the L2,3 edges of Pr in the Pr0.8Sr0.2MnO3 and Pr0.6Sr0.4MnO3 films at T = 90 K are studied. The spectral dependences point to a mixed valence state of Mn and Pr in the films. It is found that, as compared to XANES, XMCD is more sensitive to the valence state of Pr4+. The field dependences of XMCD point to ferromagnetic behavior of Mn ions and the Van Vleck paramagnetism of Pr ions, which makes a significant contribution to the total magnetization of the films. It is shown that as the Sr concentration increases, the XMCD intensity at the K edge of Mn increases, which indicates a growth of the total magnetic moment of the film due to an increase in the 4p–3d hybridization.

Аннотация: This article reports on two novel strontium bismuthate photocatalysts (Sr6Bi2O11 and Sr3Bi2O6) prepared by a solid-state synthesis for which the number of strontium atoms exceeds the number of bismuth atoms in the cation sublattice; for comparison, the bismuthate Sr2Bi2O5 was also re-examined. All three bismuthates were characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques (XRD, XPS, EDX, DR, Raman, SEM, and EIS). Direct bandgap energies for the three bismuthates were assessed from diffuse reflectance spectra: 2.61 eV for Sr6Bi2O11; 3.40 eV for Sr3Bi2O6; 3.17 eV for Sr2Bi2O5, while the flatband potentials (versus NHE) of the corresponding valence bands were estimated from XPS spectra: +2.22 eV for Sr6Bi2O11; +1.71 eV for Sr3Bi2O6; +1.61 eV for Sr2Bi2O5. The two novel bismuthates displayed photocatalytic activity toward the photodegradation of acetaldehyde in the gas phase and phenol in aqueous media, with the Sr6Bi2O11 system exhibiting significantly greater photoactivity vis-à-vis the Sr3Bi2O6 bismuthate; by comparison, Sr2Bi2O5 was photocatalytically inactive in this case; their photoactivity was also assessed from the photodegradation of phenol in aqueous media (in all cases using UV-Vis irradiation from a Xe light source). Detailed photocatalytic mechanisms are proposed based on UV-induced coloration studies (carried out using a high-pressure Hg lamp; 365 nm) and on the photodegradation in the presence of radical scavengers to explain how composition and structure of the three bismuthates affect their photocatalytic activity. The role of point defects (oxygen vacancies) in their crystal lattice is described as they affect photocatalytic activity by acting as electron traps and potentially as electron/hole recombination centers.

Аннотация: Dielectric energy-storage ceramics have the advantages of high power density and fast charge and discharge rates, and are considered to be excellent candidate materials for pulsed power-storage capacitors. At present, the application of dielectric energy-storage ceramics is hindered by their low energy density and the fact that most of them contain elemental lead. Therefore, lead-free dielectric energy-storage ceramics with high energy storage density have become a research hot spot. In this paper, we first present the requirements that dielectric energy-storage capacitors impose on the properties of ceramic materials. We then review our previous research work combined with research progress into bismuth (Bi)-based lead-free energy-storage ceramics including Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT), BiFeO3, and Bi0.2Sr0.7TiO3, in which the composition design ideas and related energy-storage characteristics of BNT-based lead-free energy-storage ceramics are emphasized. At the same time, we highlight the problems faced by Bi-based lead-free energy-storage ceramics and some strategies for addressing them. Finally, we examine the future prospects of research into Bi-based lead-free energy-storage ceramics.

Аннотация: Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study La2CuO4–La1.56Sr0.44CuO4 composites with different annealing times. Maps of the strontium distribution for such systems are calculated and compared to experimental data obtained for the area of contact between two dissimilar granules. The coefficient of lattice diffusion of strontium is found. At the areas of contact between La2CuO4 and La1.56Sr0.44CuO4 granules, the strontium concentration corresponds to superconducting phase La2−xSrxCuO4 with x = 0.05–0.25. The technological parameters of synthesis affect the size and number of superconducting and normal regions. Prolonged annealing lowers the gradient of the strontium concentration, which halts the increase in the size of the superconducting regions. This saturation confirms the diffusion front model.

Аннотация: In SrxBa1-xNb2O6 crystals (x = 0.33, 0.5, 0.61, and 0.75), temperature dependences of spontaneous polarization, strain, elastic modules, and second harmonic generation (SHG) signal are compared. It is revealed that SHG describes the temperature dependences of dipole moments in polar nanoregions in paraelectric phase. In the vicinity of the phase transition in paraelectric phase, SHG reflects the temperature behavior of relatively large and long-lived polar asymmetric regions as indicated by the presence of the intermediate temperature range on the temperature dependence of this nonlinear response.

Аннотация: The magnetostatic and magnetic resonance properties of the Y0.5Sr0.5Cr0.5Mn0.5O3 polycrystalline system have been experimentally investigated. The predominance of the intracrystalline ferromagnetic interaction and the antiferromagnetic character of the intercrystallite interaction have been established. The magnetic resonance spectrum in the magnetically ordered region consists of two lines. The high-field line corresponds to the interacting parts of polycrystal shells and the low-field peak is related to the disordered system of ferromagnetic particles.

Аннотация: Random quasi-phase-matching (RQPM) of the second-harmonic generation process is investigated experimentally and theoretically in a strongly randomized spontaneously grown nonlinear photonic crystal structure of strontium tetraborate. The thickness of domains in the structure is measured and employed in calculations of angular and spectral dependences of random quasi-phase-matching. Despite the great scale of randomness, the RQPM effect is preserved. The calculated enhancement factor due to RQPM is in excellent agreement with experiment, and good agreement between calculations and experiment is obtained for the shape of the angular dependence of RQPM. The calculated spectral dependence of RQPM consists of a number of narrow peaks, and a maximum enhancement factor is attained in the near ultraviolet. The band structure of randomized nonlinear photonic crystal is calculated.
