Polymer dispersed liquid crystal -- Nematic droplet -- Ionic surfactant -- Anchoring transition -- Director configuration -- Optical texture
Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. liquid crystal -- hybrid aligned cholesteric -- ionic surfactant -- multilayer photonic structure -- geometric phase
Аннотация: A chiral nematic is embedded between multilayer mirrors to obtain voltage-inducible polarized resonance spectra. Initially, the nematic director is uniformly oriented perpendicular to the mirrors’ surfaces because the chiral nematic helix is completely untwisted due to the homeotropic boundary conditions specified by the adsorbed cations. Then, a voltage is applied to remove the layer of surface-active cations from the input mirror. The obtained twisted homeoplanar configuration has a helix pitch exceeding the layer’s thickness. The twisting leads to the anomalous blue shift of the o-modes in the transmittance spectrum of the photonic structure. This blue shift can be effectively compensated by repulsion of spectral peaks as a result of mode coupling in the vicinity of the virtual avoided crossing point. The experimental results obtained are confirmed numerically using the 4 ˣ 4 transfer matrix method and explained with the contribution of a geometric phase.

Cholesteric -- ionic surfactant -- anchoring transition -- modulated hybrid-aligned cholesteric layer -- diffraction grating
Аннотация: Reorientation of cholesteric liquid crystal induced by the electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring within the cell with confinement ratio exceeding 1 has been studied. The change of homeotropic surface anchoring to the planar one on the electrode-anode substrate under the action of DC voltage causes the formation of the modulated hybrid-aligned cholesteric layer in the cell. Optical texture of the liquid crystal layer with such an orientation structure is the linear periodic stripes. Homogeneity of emerging optical texture depending on the confinement ratio as well as on the prehistory of voltage application has been considered. It has been found that the ionic modification of surface anchoring results in total transformation of the diffraction pattern observed after the laser beam passing through the sample.

Аннотация: The orientational transitions induced by electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring in liquid crystal cells based on the nematics with small or zero dielectric anisotropy Δε are considered. The type of director reorientation is shown to be independent of the sign of dielectric anisotropy and can be the same for the nematics with both negative and positive Δε. Besides, the orientational transition and corresponding switchable optical states do not depend on the Δε value and can be effectively realised even for the nematics with zero dielectric anisotropy.

Аннотация: Light scattering and transmission by a monolayer polymer dispersed liquid crystal film containing liquid crystal droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring of liquid crystal molecules at the polymer-droplet interface is considered theoretically and experimentally. The developed optical model is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations of the theory of scattering of waves. It is applied to describe the interference quenching effect for the coherently transmitted light and electrically controllable symmetry breaking effect in small-angle structure of light scattered by film containing droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring. The analysis of transmittance and reflectance of the one-dimensional photonic crystals composed of monolayers is carried out. The formation of the photonic band gaps is analyzed.

Аннотация: A memory effect has been discovered in composite films based on a polymer containing dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal, which is related to the modification of the surface anchoring by an ionic surfactant under the action of an applied electric field. Parameters of electric signals are selected that ensure the switching of the composite film between some stable states with different levels of optical transmittance.

Аннотация: Inverse mode of a novel electrooptical effect caused by the ionic modification of boundary conditions has been studied for liquid crystal droplets. We have considered the droplets of nematic 5CB doped with cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol. In the initial state the surface anchoring was normal on the whole interface due to the high concentration of homeotropic surfactant. Applied voltage results in the purification of a section of the interface from the surface-active cations thereby restoring here a tangential anchoring and stimulating the significant transformation of droplet structure. At that three different types of director field distribution can be realized within the same droplet. The proper textures of the droplet both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer are considered.

Hydrothermal stability -- MCM-41 -- Mesostructure -- TEM -- X-ray diffraction
Аннотация: The electron density maps calculated from X-ray diffraction patterns of the mesoporous silica material MCM-41 present averaged mesostructure images which in contrast to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images are exceptionally repeating and represent the whole sample. It was shown that the averaged mesostructure parameters such as a unit cell parameter, a pore diameter, a wall width, a pore shape estimated from the X-ray powder diffraction data in combination with the continuous electron density function approach allow monitoring continuous set of the silica framework states at different stages of the material synthesis. The mentioned technique supplemented by N 2-adsorption measurements and transmission electron microscopy was applied for consideration of the MCM-41 hydrothermal stability. Attention has been given to the variations of the synthesis conditions affecting the hydrothermal stability, in particular the maintaining the basicity of the synthesis solution as well the substitution of the synthesis solution with water or a salt solution at hydrothermal treatment. The averaged pore shape was observed to be changed from cylindrical to hexagonal-prismatic form. The observed wall thickness was in the range from 0.75 to 1.25 nm. The competition of silica polycondensation and surface hydrolysis was shown to be responsible for the variety of framework geometry and hydrothermal stability. It has been established that the pore diameter increases generally due to the osmotic pressure of water. If the pores acquire the average prismatic hexagonal shape, the sample has low hydrothermal stability. Under the conditions favorable for the polycondensation the pores have averaged cylindrical shape and material demonstrates higher hydrothermal stability. Cooperative mechanism of mesostructure destruction under hydrothermal conditions was observed using TEM data and was discussed in connection with irregular polycondensation. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Аннотация: The electro-optical characteristics of a composite film based on a polymer containing dispersed nematic liquid crystal (NLC) doped with an ionic surfactant have been studied. The threshold character of the reorientation of NLC droplets as well as the dependence of the modulation amplitude of light transmission on the electric field strength has been revealed for the effect of ionic modification of surface anchoring. The dynamical parameters of the optical response have been determined.

Аннотация: A conceptually new approach for developing methods of control of liquid crystals is discussed. The approach is based on modifying surface anchoring. A brief review of the authors’ research on developing ionic-surfactant control of liquid crystalline materials is described. This approach is based on the effect of electrically induced modification of the boundary conditions by ions of surface-active compounds. © 2017, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral nematics with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.

Аннотация: A reorientation of cholesteric liquid crystal with a large helix pitch induced by the electrically controlled ionic modification of the surface anchoring has been studied. In initial state, the cholesteric helix is untwisted completely owing to the normal surface anchoring specified by the cations adsorbed at the substrates. As a result, the homeotropic director configuration is observed within the cell. Under the action of DC electric field, one of the substrates becomes free from the layer of surface active cations, therefore, setting the planar surface anchoring. The latter, in turn, leads to the formation of the hybrid chiral structure. The threshold value and dynamic parameters have been estimated for this process as well as the range of control voltages, which do not allow the electrohydrodynamic instabilities. The twisted hybrid director configuration observed in the experiment has been analysed by means of the simulation of polarisation change of light propagating through the cholesteric layer with asymmetric (planar and homeotropic) surface anchoring on the cell substrates.

Аннотация: The surface anchoring of a nematic doped with the ionic surfactant has been investigated and compared with the one in the undoped sample. The director tilt angle at the substrates coated with the orienting polymer film has been determined by the null method in a rotating magnetic field. The Frederiks transition in a magnetic field has been chosen as a convenient technique to measure the polar anchoring energy Wθ. The temperature dependences of anchoring energy have been obtained for the various nematic cells. The Wθ values for nematic doped with the ionic surfactant are less than for the undoped one. The factors affecting the measurement accuracy have been discussed. The accuracy is higher for the thinner nematic layers and weaker anchoring energy.

Аннотация: The transmittance anisotropy of a composite polymer-liquid-crystal film has been studied as it varies with the degree to which it is elongated. The composite film includes polyvinyl alcohol, the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, and the surfeiting cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, which initiates homeotropic adhesion of the nematic to the surface of the polymer. It is shown that, when the film is uniaxially stretched, the transmittance of the orthogonally polarized component of directly transmitted radiation and accordingly the degree of polarization abruptly increase, reaching saturation when it is stretched to twice its length. Such variation of the film's macroscopic optical properties can be caused by an orientational-structural transition to a homogeneous configuration of the director in deformed droplets of the nematic and makes it possible to substantially improve the optical characteristics of light polarizers based on such composite media.
