Аннотация: Films of carbon nanotubes oriented perpendicularly to the substrate surface and filled with iron nanoparticles have been synthesized and studied. Morphological features of these nanocomposite films lead to the appearance of an easy magnetization axis, which is perpendicular to the film plane. A method for enhancement of this effect is suggested and successfully tested. (C) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: Fe K-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) powders was measured with synchrotron radiation under variable pressure and temperature conditions in diamond anvil cell. The magnetic dichroism was observed to decrease discontinuously by similar to 50% between 12 and 16 GPa, independent of temperature. The magnetic transition is attributed to a high-spin to intermediate-spin transition of Fe(2+) ions in the octahedral sites and could account for previously observed structural and electrical anomalies in magnetite at this pressure range. The interpretation of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data is supported by x-ray emission spectroscopy and theoretical cluster calculations.

Аннотация: Metallic nickel nanoparticles of various sizes are formed in a thin near-surface layer in an amorphous SiO2 matrix during 40-keV Ni+ ion implantation at a dose of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The micro-structure of the irradiated layer and the crystal structure, morphology, and sizes of nickel particles formed at various irradiation doses are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The magnetooptical Faraday effect and the magnetic circular dichroism in an ensemble of nickel nanoparticles are studied in the optical range. The permittivity (epsilon) over cap tensor components are calculated for the implanted samples using an effective medium model with allowance for the results of magnetooptical measurements. The spectral dependences of the tensor (epsilon) over cap components are found to be strongly different from those of a continuous metallic nickel film. These differences are related to a disperse structure of the magnetic nickel phase and to a surface plasma resonance in the metal nanoparticles.

Аннотация: The magnetic and resonance properties of CoNi(P) alloys, synthesized by chemical deposition as films on single crystal silicon substrates and as filaments in linear pores of porous silicon substrates, were studied by magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. It is established that CoNi(P) alloys of the same composition but different morphologies occur in states characterized by different degrees of nonequilibrium, which is manifested by different modes of the magnetization approach to saturation. Environmental catalysis -- Nanostructure -- Gasification -- Oxidation -- Mossbauer spectroscopy
Аннотация: Nanocomposite Fe–Al oxide catalysts were prepared by the melting of iron and aluminum nitrates with the subsequent calcination in air at different temperatures. It was found that the catalysts calcined at 450 °C are more active in the oxidation of CO than the catalysts calcined at 700 °C. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that all the catalysts consist of hematite, α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, and Al2O3 in an amorphous state. Iron oxide is the active component, which provides the oxidation of CO, while alumina is a texture promoter. The increase in the calcination temperature leads to a minor increase in the average size of hematite nanoparticles and an insignificant decrease in the specific surface area. Kinetic measurements showed that the oxidation of CO over the Fe–Al catalysts calcined at 450 and 700 °C proceeds with the activation energy of 61–69 and 91 kJ/mol, respectively. This means that the low-temperature and high-temperature catalysts contain different active species. Temperature-programmed reduction with CO indicated that the decrease in the calcination temperature improves the reducibility of the Fe-Al nanocomposites. According to 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, the low-temperature catalysts contain hydrated iron oxides (acagenite and ferrihydrite) and a significant amount of highly defective hematite, which is absent in the high-temperature catalyst. These species can provide the enhanced activity of the low-temperature catalysts in the oxidation of CO.

Аннотация: The magnetic and electrical properties and the temperature dependence of these properties of cobalt films prepared at high condensation rates (10(5)-10(6) Angstrom/s) are investigated. Incremented annealing reveals several nonequilibrium states of cobalt in transition from the as-prepared metastable structure to the ordinary hcp structure. The anomalies of the properties are analyzed from the standpoint of the nanocrystalline state of the samples. Model concepts of microcluster formations in the investigated films are also discussed. Аннотация: The values of saturation magnetization M-s, exchange coupling constant A, local magnetic anisotropy field H-a , random anisotropy correlation radius R-c, and coercive force H-c were independently measured for multilayer Co/Pd films with nanocrystalline and amorphous Co layers. It is shown that variation of the coercive force H-c(t(Co)) as a function of the cobalt layer thickness t(Co) is related to changes in characteristics of the magnetic microstructure. The main factor determining changes in the ferromagnetic correlation radius R-f and the average anisotropy [K] of a magnetic block in multilayer Co/Pd films is variation of exchange coupling constant A(t(Co)). Аннотация: The structural and magnetic properties of (Fe/Si) N nanostructures obtained by successive deposition on the SiO2/Si(100) surface at a temperature of the substrate of 300 K have been studied. The thicknesses of all Fe and Si layers have been determined by transmission electron microscopy measurements. The magnetic properties have been studied by the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) method near the Fe L 3, 2 absorption edges. The orbital (m l ) and spin (m S ) contributions to the total magnetic moment of iron have been separated. The thicknesses of magnetic and nonmagnetic iron silicide on the Si/Fe and Fe/Si interfaces have been determined with the surface sensitivity of the XMCD method and the model of the interface between the nonmagnetic and weakened magnetic phases.

Аннотация: The formation of the hard-magnetic ordered L10-FePd phase in thin bilayer Pd/α-Fe(001) films has been experimentally studied. Solid-state reactions initiated by thermal heating in bilayer Pd/α-Fe(001) films with a thickness of 50–60 nm (the atomic ratio Pd: Fe ≈ 50: 50) separated from the substrate have been studied using the in situ electron diffraction methods. It has been shown that the solid-state reaction between the palladium and iron layers in Pd/α-Fe(001) starts at 400°C with the formation of the disordered Fe-Pd phase. At 480°C, the ordered L10-FePd phase is formed. The order-disorder phase transition has been studied. It has been established that the transition of the ordered L10-FePd phase to the disordered FePd phase starts at 725°C. At 740°C, only the disordered FePd phase is present over the whole volume of the film. The observed temperature of the order-disorder phase transition is shifted from the equilibrium value by 35°C to higher temperatures. This effect is assumingly associated with the higher concentration of palladium atoms at the boundaries of the Fe-Pd crystal grains owing to the grain-boundary adsorption.
