Аннотация: Polarized optical absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of the trigonal multiferroic Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 were studied in the region of transitions 4I9/2 → 4F3/2 and 4I9/2 → (4F5/2 + 2H9/2) in Nd3+ ion. Components of the crystal field splitting of the states were identified with the help of MCD and polarized absorption spectra. Splitting of the Nd3+ absorption lines caused by the magnetic ordering were observed. Splitting of Nd3+ ground state in Fe-sublattice exchange field was found to be ∼9 cm−1 at 5.7 K. The Zeeman splitting of some absorption lines in the external magnetic field and changes of the effective Landé factors in the C3-direction as a result of the corresponding optical transitions were found. Peculiarities in the temperature behavior of the absorption lines connected both with the ground and excited states were revealed. Peculiarities connected with the excited states testify to the local crystal distortions in the excited states.

Аннотация: The polarized absorption spectra of trigonal single crystal Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 were measured in the spectral range 10,000–22,000 cm−1. The d–d and f–f transitions spectra were separated. The f–f transitions intensities were analyzed in terms of the Judd–Ofelt theory in a ferroborate with huntite structure for the first time, and the following parameters of the theory were obtained: Ω2 = 4.4 × 10−20 cm2, Ω4 = 8.04 × 10−20 cm2, and Ω6 = 8.25 × 10−20 cm2. The strengths, spontaneous emission probabilities, branching ratios, spectroscopic quality factor and excited state lifetime were calculated for transitions from the 4F3/2 state to 4IJ manifold. All the obtained spectroscopic characteristics were compared with those of alumoborates with the same crystal structure.

Аннотация: Polarized absorption spectra and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 single crystal were measured in the range of 10000-21000 cm-1 and at temperatures 2-300 K. On the basis of these data, in the paramagnetic state of the crystal, the 4f states of the Nd3+ ion were identified in terms of the irreducible representations and in terms of |J,±MJ) wave functions of the free atom. The changes of the Lande factor during f-f transitions were found theoretically in the |J,±MJ) wave functions approximation and were determined experimentally with the help of the measured MCD spectra. In the majority of cases the experimentally found values are close to the theoretically predicted ones. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Spectra of absorption, magnetic circular dichroism, and natural circular dichroism of the f–f transitions 4I9/2 → 4F3/2, 2H9/2 + 4F5/2, 4S3/2 + 4F7/2, 2G7/2 + 4G5/2, 2K13/2 + 4G7/2, and 4G9/2 in the Nd3+ ions in the Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 crystal have been measured as a function of the temperature in the interval of 90–300 K. Temperature dependences of the magneto-optical activity (MOA) and natural optical activity (NOA) of the transitions have been obtained. It has been found that, in contrast to allowed transitions, the temperature dependence of the MOA of the f–f transitions does not obey the Curie–Weiss law and the NOA depends on temperature. The NOA of some transitions changes the sign with variation in temperature. These phenomena have been explained by the presence of three contributions to the allowance of the f–f transitions, which lead to three contributions of different signs to the MOA and NOA. The range of the MOA of the f–f transitions in the Nd3+ ion has been predicted theoretically and confirmed experimentally.

Аннотация: The antiferromagnetic resonance, heat capacity, magnetic properties, and magnetic phase diagram of a GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystal in which some of the iron ions were substituted by diamagnetic gallium ions have been investigated. It has been found that the Ne,l temperature upon diamagnetic substitution decreased to 17 K compared to 38 K in the unsubstituted crystal. The effective exchange and anisotropy fields for GdFe2.1Ga0.9(BO3)(4) have been estimated from the field dependences of magnetization and resonance measurements. The magnetic phase diagram of the crystal has been constructed from magnetic and resonance measurements. In GdFe2.1Ga0.9(BO3)(4), there is no spontaneous reorientation and, in the absence of a magnetic field, the crystal remains an easy-axis one in the entire domain of magnetic ordering. The critical field of the reorientation transition to an induced easy-plane state in a magnetic field along the trigonal axis has been found to increase compared to that in the unsubstituted crystal.

Аннотация: Neutron diffraction, susceptibility and magnetization measurements were performed on iron borates RFe(3)(BO(3))(4)(R = Y, Ho) to investigate the low temperature magnetic structures and to clarify the role of the rare earth in the formation of the long-range magnetic order. Both compounds see an identical magnetic propagation vector tau = [ 0, 0, 1/2] within the P3(1)21 crystallographic space group appear at Neel temperatures of T(N) = 37 K for the Y and TN = 38 K for the Ho compound. The strong polarization effect of the Fe sublattice on the Ho(3+) ions leads to the simultaneous ordering of both sublattices while the competition between their anisotropies governs the spin-reorientation process at T(SR) = 5 K. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of the determined structural details and the specific rare-earth ions present including information on compounds investigated earlier.

Аннотация: The antiferromagnetic resonance in single crystals of the YFe3(BO3)(4)-GdFe3(BO3)(4) system is studied in the frequency range 25-140 GHz and the temperature range 4.2-50.0 K. It is established that the YFe3(BO3)(4) crystal containing only the magnetic subsystem of Fe3+ ions is an antiferromagnet with an easy anisotropy plane. The temperature dependences of the gaps in the antiferromagnetic resonance spectra of GdFe3(BO3)(4) and YxGd1-xFe3(BO3)(4) are used to calculate the contributions of the Fe3+ and Gd3+ subsystems to the magnetic anisotropy of these crystals. The contributions are found to be close in magnitude and have opposite signs. This leads to a relatively weak uniaxial anisotropy field in the crystals under investigation. Since the exchange interaction between the Gd3+ and Fe3+ ions magnetizes the magnetic subsystem of gadolinium, both subsystems start to contribute simultaneously at the Neel temperature of the iron subsystem.

Аннотация: We report high-resolution optical absorption spectra for NdFe3(BO3)(4) trigonal single crystal, which is known to exhibit a giant magnetoelectric effect below the temperature of magnetic ordering T-N=33 K. The analysis of the temperature-dependent polarized spectra reveals the energies and, in some cases, symmetries and exchange splittings of Nd3+ 84 Kramers doublets. We perform crystal-field calculations starting from the exchange-charge model, obtain a set of six real crystal-field parameters, and calculate wave functions and magnetic g factors. In particular, the values g(perpendicular to)=2.385 and g(parallel to)=1.376 were found for the Nd3+ ground-state doublet. We obtain B-loc=7.88 T and parallel to J(FN)parallel to=0.48 K for the values of the local effective magnetic field at liquid-helium temperatures at the Nd3+ site and the Nd-Fe exchange integral, respectively, using the experimentally measured Nd3+ ground-state splitting of 8.8 cm(-1). To check the reliability of our set of crystal-field parameters, we model the magnetic susceptibility data from literature. A dimer containing two nearest-neighbor iron ions in the spiral chain is considered to partly account for quasi-one-dimensional properties of iron borates, and then the mean-field approximation is used. The results of calculations with the exchange parameters for Fe3+ ions J(nn)=-6.25 K (intrachain interactions) and J(nnn)=-1.92 K (interchain interactions) obtained from fitting agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: We present the results of the magnetic and heat capacity study of a magnetic phase diagram of a HoFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal. Two magnetic phase transitions are found in the low-temperature region. The transition from the paramagnetic to easy-plane antiferromagnetic state occurs at T-N = 37.4 K and is independent of an applied magnetic field. The sharp heat capacity peaks and magnetization jumps corresponding to the spontaneous and field-induced spin-reorientation transitions between the easy-axis and easy-plane states are observed below 4.7 K. Also, the additional heat capacity peaks, which can be attributed to the Schottky anomalies with the field-dependent characteristic temperatures, are found. According to the magnetic and thermal measurement data, the magnetic phase diagrams of HoFe3(BO3)(4) for the magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the crystal axis are constructed.
