Аннотация: The specific heat of the cryolites (NH4)(3)Ga1-xScxF6 with x=1.0, 0.1, and 0 was measured. The thermodynamic parameters of the phase transitions were determined. Аннотация: A number of new peaks close to the previously predicted energies of virtual electronic states [S.G. Ovchinnikov and V.N. Zabluda, Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 125, 150 (2004) [JETP 98, 135 (2004)]] have been observed in the absorption spectra of FeBO3 single crystals in the infrared range. The 0.27-eV peak was absent in the scheme presented in the work cited above and, to explain it, a multielectron theory taking into account the (2) T (2) low-spin term of the Fe3+ ion has been developed.

Аннотация: The films of nanocrystalline Fe-Ni alloys obtained by various methods in the permalloy composition range (similar to 20 at. % Fe) were studied by the method of spin-wave resonance (SWR) spectroscopy. The effective SW exchange stiffness eta (eff) exhibits a characteristic dependence on the spin wavelength, which is indicative of the magnetization fluctuations in these films with a correlation radius of 12-20 nm. This is indirect evidence of the microphase separation in these nanocrystalline alloys and provides an estimate of the characteristic spatial size of an inhomogeneity in the atomic ratio X-Fe/X-Ni . Аннотация: The heat capacities of Pb2MgWO6 and Pb2CoWO6 and the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the phase transitions have been studied on powdered samples by means of an adiabatic calorimeter and DTA performed under pressure, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters, such as change of total excess entropy, latent hear and hysteresis of the phase transition temperature were determined. Entropies and p-T phase diagrams are discussed in connection with structural data.

Аннотация: Discovering materials that exhibit zero linear compressibility (ZLC) behavior under hydrostatic pressure is extremely difficult. To date, only a handful of ZLC materials have been found, and almost all of them are ultrahard materials with densified structures. Here, to explore ZLC in nondense materials, a structural model analogous to the structure of the “Lu‐Ban stool,” a product of traditional Chinese woodworking invented 2500 years ago, is proposed. The application of this model to borates leads to the discovery of ZLC in AEB2O4 (AE = Ca and Sr) with the unique “Lu‐Ban stool”‐like structure, which can obtain a subtle mechanical balance between pressure‐induced expansion and contraction effects. Coupled with the very wide ultraviolet transparent windows, the ZLC behavior of AEB2O4 may result in some unique but important applications. The applications of the “Lu‐Ban stool” model open a new route for pursuing ZLC materials in nondense structural systems.

Аннотация: To study non-Heisenberg effects in the vicinity of spin crossover in strongly correlated electron systems we derive an effective low-energy Hamiltonian for the two-band Kanamori model. It contains a Heisenberg high-spin term proportional to exchange constant as well as a low-spin term proportional to spin gap parameter ɛs. Using cluster mean field theory we obtain several non-Heisenberg effects. Near the critical value of spin gap ɛcs there is a magnetic phase transition of first order. In the vicinity of ɛcs in the paramagnetic phase we observe nontrivial behavior of the Curie constant in the paramagnetic susceptibility in the wide range of temperature. Reentrant temperature behavior of nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations is observed at ɛsɛcs. Finally, the pressure-temperature magnetic phase diagram for ferroperriclase is obtained using the effective Hamiltonian.

Аннотация: Yttrium-containing endohedral metallofullerenes are synthesized in an RF arc discharge in the helium flow with embedded Y2O3. It is shown that the formation of the metallofullerenes depends on the helium pressure in a chamber; however, this dependence cannot be explained using the model of formation of conventional fullerenes without a guest atom in a molecule. The results of extraction of Y@C-82 by pyridine and carbon disulfide are reported. The pressure corresponding to the maximum yttrium-containing endohedral metallofullerene content is shown to be 60 kPa; under this pressure, extraction by carbon disulfide allows obtaining 27.1 wt % of the endohedral metallofullerene, while extraction by pyridine yields its amount of 17.3 wt %.

Аннотация: Ceramic volumetric composites xLa(0.7)Pb(0.3)MnO(3)-(1-x)PbTiO3 (x = 0.18 and 0.85) were prepared. X-ray investigations have shown that rather low sintering temperature (800 degrees C) has allowed us to avoid the reaction and interdiffusion between two initial phases. Heat capacity, thermal expansion, and intensive magnetocaloric effect were measured in a wide temperature range. The sample composition has a low influence on temperatures of the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions in composites. Electro- and barocaloric effects were determined by analysis in the framework of thermodynamic theory, electric equation of state, Maxwell relationships, and entropy-temperature-pressure phase diagram. Multicaloric efficiency of composites is discussed and compared with that of initial La0.7Pb0.3MnO3 and PbTiO3 compounds. Variation of a relationship between components can significantly increase both barocaloric and magnetocaloric efficiency of compositional material due to the mechanical stress appearing between grains of different ferroic phases under magnetic field.
