Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): peptide nanotubes--diphenylalanine--phase transition--cyclization--water
Аннотация: Self-assembled peptide diphenylalanine (NH2-Phe-Phe-COOH, FF) is one of the most important emergent functional materials, demonstrating wide range of fascinating physical and chemical properties including biocompatibility, chemical variability, exceptional rigidity, outstanding piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric responses. Up to now, the phase transitions in FF nanotubes were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry and mass spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy was implemented at room temperature only, and the microscopic details of these transitions remained unknown. In this work, the structural transformations in FF nanotubes at elevated temperatures (up to tubes destruction at 160 °C) were studied by Raman spectroscopy. Two structural transformations were observed in this region: hexagonal to orthorhombic transition at about 100 °C and the cyclization of FF molecules at about 150 °C. For the first time, these transformations were considered in the context of reconstruction of the water subsystem in the nanotubes, thus demonstrating the strong relation between the peptide tube and the state of the water inside. Using an effective frequency of nanotubes' lattice vibrations, we found that many effects observed earlier by other methods are induced by the variation of the water subsystem. The analysis of certain lines in the middle part of the Raman spectrum allowed us to describe the microscopic details of FF molecule cyclization. These results improve the understanding of the role of water in the origin of outstanding properties of FF nanotubes and thus promote developing new functional devices on their basis.

Аннотация: Pulsed-field gradient NMR spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging methods were used to investigate water suspensions of nanosized fibers of aluminum oxide and ice composite materials based on these fibers. Introduction of the nanofibers was shown to have no noticeable structural effect in the suspensions in the Al2O3 concentration range of 1-10 wt %. High content of the filler was found to change the morphology and texture of the ice matrix in the composites remarkably: it becomes more homogeneous and acquires a higher degree of continuity; the melting front does not visualize internal melting zones or integrity defects in the composite. At the same time, addition of the nanofibers to the ice composites weakly influences the quantitative dynamics of the heat transfer, which is manifested in close values of the propagation speeds of the freezing/melting front in the samples at similar temperatures.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): active layer--arctic tundra soil--freezing--microwave remote sensing--radiometry--soil moisture and ocean salinity (smos)--soil temperature--temperature profile--thawing
Аннотация: Possibility of remote sensing of both the surface temperature and the temperature gradient in the permafrost active layer from L-band brightness temperature observations is theoretically investigated at a SMOS frequency of 1.4 GHz. Bare soil emission is simulated based on the semi-empirical L-MEB model. The brightness temperature is simulated using the soil density, surface roughness, temperature, and moisture profiles measured in situ at the Biosphere Station Franklin Bluffs, Alaska, USA (69°39'N, 148°43'W) from September 2, 1999, to August 23, 2001. The soil permittivity is calculated using the temperature-dependent generalized refractive mixing dielectric model for the organic rich soil sample collected in North Slope, Alaska (68°38'N, 149°35'W). This model predicts the complex dielectric constant of moist soil both thawed and frozen at temperatures from-30°C to +25°C and moistures from 0 to 0.94 g/g. The brightness temperatures simulated for field-of-view angles from 0 to 60\circ are inverted into the temperature profiles, and their deviations from the temperature profiles measured in situ are estimated. The error in reconstructing temperature profiles is found to be no greater than 1.8 °C to depths of 0.15 m. © 2013 IEEE.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): lead sulfide--lead-zinc ore--lead sulfide--ultrafine particles--aquatic nanoparticles
Аннотация: Although mining and mineral processing industry is a vast source of heavy metal pollutants, the formation and behavior of micrometer- and nanometer-sized particles and their aqueous colloids entered the environment from the technological media has received insufficient attention to date. Here, the yield and characteristics of ultrafine mineral entities produced by routine grinding of the Pb-Zn sulfide ore (Gorevskoe ore deposit, Russia) were studied using laser diffraction analysis (LDA), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurement, microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, with most attention given to toxic lead species. It was revealed, in particular, that the fraction of particles less that 1 ?m in the ground ore typical reaches 0.4 vol. %. The aquatic particles in supernatants were micrometer size aggregates with increased content of zinc, sulfur, calcium as compared with the bulk ore concentrations. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal species decreased with time, with their zeta potentials remaining about -12 mV. The colloids produced from galena were composed of 20-50 nm PbS nanoparticles associated with lead sulfate and thiosulfate, while the surface oxidation products at precipitated galena were largely lead oxyhydroxides. The size and zeta potential of the lead-bearing colloids decreased with time down to about 100 nm and from -15 mV to -30 mV, respectively. And, conversely, lead sulfide nanoparticles were mobilized before the aggregates during redispersion of the precipitates in fresh portions of water. The potential environmental impact of the metal-bearing colloids, which is due to the large-scale production and relative stability, is discussed. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
