Аннотация: Neutron diffraction, susceptibility and magnetization measurements (for R = Er only) were performed on iron borates RFe3(BO3)(4) (R = Pr, Er) to investigate details of the crystallographic structure, the low temperature magnetic structures and transitions and to study the role of the rare earth anisotropy. PrFe3(BO3)(4), which crystallizes in the spacegroup R32, becomes antiferromagnetic at T-N = 32 K, with t = [0 0 3/2], while ErFe3(BO3)(4), which keeps the P3(1)21 symmetry over the whole studied temperature range 1.5 K < T < 520 K, becomes antiferromagnetic below T-N = 40 K, with tau = [0 0 1/2]. Both magnetic propagation vectors lead to a doubling of the crystallographic unit cell in the c-direction. Due to the strong polarization of the Fe-sublattice, the magnetic ordering of the rare earth sublattices appears simultaneously at T-N. The moment directions are determined by the rare earth anisotropy: easy-axis along c for PrFe3(BO3)(4) and easy-plane a-b for ErFe3(BO3)(4). There are no spin reorientations present in either of the two compounds but there is the appearance below 10 K of a minority phase in the Er-compound adopting a 120 degrees arrangement of the Er-moments.

Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)(4) belongs to the family of rare-earth RFe3(BO3)(4) multiferroics. We present the first measurements of the optical spectra of SmFe3(BO3)(4) (on single crystals) and report the data on the crystal-field levels and their symmetries for the ground multiplet H-6(5/2) [0 (Gamma(4)). 135 (Gamma(56)), and 220 (Gamma(4)) cm(-1)] and on the ground-state exchange splitting (13.2 cm(-1) at 1.7 K), important to interpret the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of this compound. The observed exchange splitting of the Sm3+ Kramers doublets manifests the magnetic ordering in SmFe3(BO3)(4) at 32 +/- 1 K. From a comparison of the temperature-dependent spectra of the Sm3+ ion in SmFe3(BO3)(4) and in Nd-Gd mixed iron borate where the magnetic spin reorientation has been found earlier, we suggest the easy-plane arrangement of the Fe spins in SmFe3(BO3)(4). The samarium iron borate preserves the R32 (D-3(7)) crystal structure at all the investigated temperatures (down to 1.7 K). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: High-resolution polarized optical absorption spectra of PrFe3(BO3)(4) in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases are reported. The measured energies of the crystal-field (CF) levels within the 4f(2) configuration of Pr3+ in the paramagnetic PrFe3(BO3)(4) are described by the CF model that involves the 4f(2)/4f5d and 4f(2)/4f6p configuration interactions. Ordering of Fe spins along the crystalline c axis below T-N=32 K is confirmed by the analysis of the spectra of Er3+ introduced as a probe into PrFe3(BO3)(4). To account for the observed changes in the optical spectra of Pr3+ at temperatures below T-N, in particular, for the shift of the CF levels, splitting of the CF doublets, and the appearance of forbidden lines, the Pr-Fe exchange Hamiltonian defined by seven parameters is considered. The theoretical approach has been tested by calculating the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility. A good agreement between theory and optical and magnetic experimental data is found demonstrating the validity of the model used. The obtained results confirm that the model of the iron dimers inside the spiral chains of Fe3+(O2-)(6) octahedrons introduced by us earlier for NdFe3(BO3)(4) and modified in the present work may serve as a basis for analyzing the low-temperature properties of other rare-earth iron borates.

Аннотация: We present the results of the magnetic and heat capacity study of a magnetic phase diagram of a HoFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal. Two magnetic phase transitions are found in the low-temperature region. The transition from the paramagnetic to easy-plane antiferromagnetic state occurs at T-N = 37.4 K and is independent of an applied magnetic field. The sharp heat capacity peaks and magnetization jumps corresponding to the spontaneous and field-induced spin-reorientation transitions between the easy-axis and easy-plane states are observed below 4.7 K. Also, the additional heat capacity peaks, which can be attributed to the Schottky anomalies with the field-dependent characteristic temperatures, are found. According to the magnetic and thermal measurement data, the magnetic phase diagrams of HoFe3(BO3)(4) for the magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the crystal axis are constructed.

   DYFE3(BO3)(4)

Аннотация: The magnetic, magnetoelectric, and magnetoelastic properties of DyFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals and the Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) substituted compound with the competitive Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe exchange interactions have been investigated in magnetic fields up to 210 kOe. It has been shown that the antiferromagnetic state in Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) below the N,el temperature is easy-plane and a spontaneous spin-reorientation transition to a uniaxial state occurs near 25 K. Anomalies are observed in various physical characteristics in a spin-flop transition induced by the magnetic field along the trigonal axis. The H-T phase diagrams are constructed; they are in good agreement with a simple model taking into account the anisotropy of the exchange splitting and g factors of the ground doublets of the Dy3+ and Nd3+ ions. The features of the magnetoelectric effect in various magnetic phases have been studied. Spontaneous electric polarization has been revealed in the region of the existence of an easy-plane antiferromagnetic state in the substituted compound. A qualitative theoretical justification of the possibility of the appearance of the spontaneous spin-reorientation transition in the Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)(4) substituted compound is given.

Аннотация: We report on the emergence of new lines in the optical spectrum of the PrFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal at the magnetic ordering temperature. The transitions between singlet crystal-field sublevels of Pr3+ ion with the same transformational properties, strictly forbidden for the trigonal D-3 point symmetry of this ion in PrFe3(BO3)(4), appear below the Neel temperature and grow in intensity as a square of the order parameter. We show that the phenomenon originates from the mixing of wave functions of different Pr3+ sublevels by the Pr-Fe exchange interaction.
