Аннотация: The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Co3B2O6 single crystals are studied. Orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pnnm is detected at room temperature. The measurements of static magnetization and dynamic magnetic susceptibility reveal two magnetic anomalies at T (1) = 33 K and T (2) = 10 K and an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. The effective magnetic moment indicates a high-spin state of the Co2+ ion. A spin-flop transition is found at low temperatures and H (sf) = 23 kOe. EXAFS spectra of the K-edge absorption of Co are recorded at various temperatures, the temperature-induced changes in the parameters of the local environment of cobalt are analyzed, and the effective Co-Co and Co-O distances are determined. The magnetic interactions in the crystal are analyzed in terms of an indirect coupling model.

Аннотация: A new type of nanoparticle-containing glasses based on borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and larger radius elements, Dy, Tb, Gd, Ho, Er, Y, and Bi, is studied. Heat treatment of these glasses results in formation of magnetic nanoparticles, radically changing their physical properties. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation-based techniques: x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, x-ray absorption near-edge structure, and small-angle x-ray scattering, show a broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes with characteristics depending on the treatment regime; a crystalline structure of these nanoparticles is detected in heat treated samples. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of samples subjected to heat treatment as well as of maghemite, magnetite, and iron garnet allow to unambiguously assign the nanoparticle structure to maghemite, independently of co-dopant nature and of heat treatment regime used. Different features observed in the MCD spectra are related to different electron transitions in Fe3+ ions gathered in the nanoparticles. The static magnetization in heat treated samples has non-linear dependence on the magnetizing field with hysteresis. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves show that at higher temperatures the nanoparticles occur in superparamagnetic state with blocking temperatures above 100 K. Below ca. 20 K, a considerable contribution to both zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations occurs from diluted paramagnetic ions. Variable-temperature electron magnetic resonance (EMR) studies unambiguously show that in as-prepared glasses paramagnetic ions are in diluted state and confirm the formation of magnetic nanoparticles already at earlier stages of heat treatment. Computer simulations of the EMR spectra corroborate the broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes found by "direct" techniques as well as superparamagnetic nanoparticle behaviour demonstrated in the magnetization studies. Manganite-germanium -- Solid state reaction -- First phase -- Mn5Ge3 alloy -- Carbon impurity -- Oxygen impurity -- Annealing -- Magnetic anisotropy
Аннотация: Solid state reactions between Ge and Mn films are systematically examined using X-ray diffraction, photoelectron spectroscopy, and magnetic and electrical measurements. The films have a nominal atomic ratio Ge:Mn = 20:80 and are investigated at temperatures from 50 to 500 °C. It is established that after annealing at ~ 120°C, the ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 phase is the first phase to form at the 20Ge/80Mn interface. As the annealing temperature increases to 300°C, the weak magnetic Mn5Ge 2 + Mn3Ge phases simultaneously begin to grow and they become dominant at 400°C. Increasing the annealing temperature to 500°C leads to the formation of the ferromagnetic phase with a Curie temperature TC ~ 350-360 K and magnetization 14-25 kA/m at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction study of the samples shows the reflections from the Mn 5Ge3 phase, and the photoelectron spectra contain the oxygen and carbon peaks. The homogeneous distribution of oxygen and carbon over the sample thickness suggests that the increased Curie temperature and magnetization are related to the migration of C and O atoms into the Mn 5Ge3 lattice and the formation of the Nowotny phase Mn5Ge3CxOy. The initiation temperature (~ 120 C) is the same in the Mn5Ge3 phase with the solid-state reactions in the Ge/Mn films as well as in the phase separation in the GexMn1 - x diluted semiconductors. Thus, we conclude that the synthesis of the Mn5Ge3 phase is the moving force for the spinodal decomposition of the GexMn 1 - x diluted semiconductors.

structural phase transition -- Rb2KTiOF5 -- Raman spectroscopy -- hysteresis -- hydrostatic pressure
Аннотация: Raman spectra of Rb2KTiOF5 crystal were obtained and analyzed in the temperature range from 77 to 297 K and under hydrostatic pressure up to 4.2 GPa (at T = 295 K). The experimental results were compared with quantum-chemical simulation of TiOF5 pseudo-octahedron. To interpret effects of lattice ordering, phonon spectra of several ordered phases of Rb2KTiOF5 were calculated within ab initio generalized Gordon–Kim model, and ordering of TiOF5 molecular groups were simulated within Monte Carlo approach. The spectra exhibited orientation disordering in the cubic phase under ambient conditions. Cooling below the phase transition temperature (215 K) leads to partial ordering of the structure. The isotropic perovskite-like phase was found to undergo first-order transition into a low-symmetry anisotropic phase at about 1 GPa. Further compression up to 4.1 GPa did not show any effects associated with phase transitions. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

cordierite -- Raman spectroscopy -- high pressure -- phase transition
Аннотация: The high-pressure behaviour of cordierite, a widespread ring aluminosilicate with channels incorporating fluid compounds (H2O, CO2), is characterized by the absence of phase transitions up to 2.5 GPa. However, the distortion of the ring tetrahedra observed previously at 2.3 GPa is supposed to introduce a phase transition at higher pressure, which has not been checked so far. This work presents a high-pressure Raman spectroscopic study of natural cordierite compressed in water medium up to 4.7 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. At P > 4 GPa, a disordering of both the framework and intrachannel H2O subsystem is apparent from significant broadening of Raman peaks and the evolution of short-range order parameters. This is followed by abrupt shifts of the framework and O–H stretching modes at about 4.5 GPa, indicating a first-order phase transition. Its reversibility is seen from the recovery of the initial spectrum at P < 3 GPa. The shift amplitudes of different framework modes indicate the predominance of distortion over contraction of the framework polyhedra upon this transition. The disordering of the H2O subsystem in the high-pressure phase is likely a consequence of distortion of the channel-forming framework elements, which is supposed to be a driving force of this transition. Аннотация: Visiblemagnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in Pr1-xSrxMnO3 with x=0.2 and 0.4was investigated for the first time. Samples for the investigation – polycrystalline films with thickness from 20 to 150 nm were prepared with the dc magnetron sputtering. MCD spectra obtained in the energy interval 1–4 eV at temperatures 100–300 K consist of several maxima with different intensities: very strong one near 3.25–3.4 eV and a broad essentially weaker band near 2 eV. An additional maximum of opposite sign arises in the samples with x = 0.4MCD spectrum at 2.33 eV. Experimental spectra were decomposed to several Gaussian components, and their amplitudes temperature dependences were analyzed. In the case of x = 0.2, all four Gaussian components are characterized by the identical temperature dependence of their amplitudes. In the case of x = 0.4, maxima observed in different spectral intervals demonstrate different temperature dependences of their amplitudes. One more unexpected phenomenon is associated with the different MCD value change in different spectral intervals when coming from x = 0.2 to x = 0.4: high-energy maximum increases more than twice while low-energy maxima intensity stays at that, practically, unchanged.

Аннотация: The Raman spectra of the elpasolite (Rb2KInF6) crystal have been studied in the pressure range from 0 to 5.3 GPa at a temperature of 295 K. A phase transition at a pressure of approximately 0.9 GPa has been found. An analysis of the variations in the spectral parameters has led to the conclusion that the phase transition to a distorted phase is accompanied by the doubling of the volume of the primitive cell of the initial cubic phase. Numerical calculations of the lattice dynamics in the Rb2KInF6 crystal have been performed. The numerical simulation has established that the phase transition at a pressure of 0.9 GPa is associated with condensation of the F (lg) mode. A probable high-pressure phase is the phase with space group C2/m.
