Аннотация: The optical spectra of oriented SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals are studied in the region of the f-f transitions in the Sm3+ ion by Fourier spectroscopy. The energies, the symmetry properties, and the exchange splittings of the Stark sublevels of the ground and 17 excited multiplets of the Sm3+ ion in a crystal field of symmetry D 3 are determined from the measured temperature dependences of polarized-radiation absorption spectra. The parameters of the crystal field acting on samarium ions and the parameters of the exchange interaction between Sm3+ and Fe3+ ions are found. The anisotropy of the effective exchange interaction is shown to be substantially stronger than the magnetic anisotropy, due to a strong crystal-field-induced mixing of the ground and excited multiplets.

Аннотация: The transmission spectra of HoFe3(BO3) multiferroic single crystals are studied by optical Fourier-transform spectroscopy at temperatures of 1.7–423 K in polarized light in the spectral range 500–10 000 cm–1 with a resolution up to 0.1 cm–1. A new first-order structural phase transition close to the second-order transition is recorded at Tc = 360 K by the appearance of a new phonon mode at 976 cm–1. The reasons for considerable differences in Tc for different samples of holmium ferroborate are discussed. By temperature variations in the spectra of the f–f transitions in the Ho3+ ion, we studied two magnetic phase transitions, namely, magnetic ordering into an easy-plane structure as a second-order phase transition at TN = 39 K and spin reorientation from the ab plane to the c axis as a first-order phase transition at TSR = 4.7 ± 0.2 K. It is shown that erbium impurity in a concentration of 1 at % decreases the spin-reorientation transition temperature to TSR = 4.0 K.

Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)(4) belongs to the family of rare-earth RFe3(BO3)(4) multiferroics. We present the first measurements of the optical spectra of SmFe3(BO3)(4) (on single crystals) and report the data on the crystal-field levels and their symmetries for the ground multiplet H-6(5/2) [0 (Gamma(4)). 135 (Gamma(56)), and 220 (Gamma(4)) cm(-1)] and on the ground-state exchange splitting (13.2 cm(-1) at 1.7 K), important to interpret the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of this compound. The observed exchange splitting of the Sm3+ Kramers doublets manifests the magnetic ordering in SmFe3(BO3)(4) at 32 +/- 1 K. From a comparison of the temperature-dependent spectra of the Sm3+ ion in SmFe3(BO3)(4) and in Nd-Gd mixed iron borate where the magnetic spin reorientation has been found earlier, we suggest the easy-plane arrangement of the Fe spins in SmFe3(BO3)(4). The samarium iron borate preserves the R32 (D-3(7)) crystal structure at all the investigated temperatures (down to 1.7 K). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Temperature-dependent high-resolution optical spectra of the Er3+ probe ion in DyFe3(BO3)(4) and HoFe3(BO3)(4) are reported. The data provide the temperature of magnetic ordering and direction of the Fe3+ magnetic moments. Both compounds order magnetically at T-N = 39 +/- 1K. The magnetic structure of DyFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-axis type, while that of HoFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-plane type. The role of anisotropic interactions between the iron and the rare-earth subsystems is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: We report high-resolution optical absorption spectra for NdFe3(BO3)(4) trigonal single crystal, which is known to exhibit a giant magnetoelectric effect below the temperature of magnetic ordering T-N=33 K. The analysis of the temperature-dependent polarized spectra reveals the energies and, in some cases, symmetries and exchange splittings of Nd3+ 84 Kramers doublets. We perform crystal-field calculations starting from the exchange-charge model, obtain a set of six real crystal-field parameters, and calculate wave functions and magnetic g factors. In particular, the values g(perpendicular to)=2.385 and g(parallel to)=1.376 were found for the Nd3+ ground-state doublet. We obtain B-loc=7.88 T and parallel to J(FN)parallel to=0.48 K for the values of the local effective magnetic field at liquid-helium temperatures at the Nd3+ site and the Nd-Fe exchange integral, respectively, using the experimentally measured Nd3+ ground-state splitting of 8.8 cm(-1). To check the reliability of our set of crystal-field parameters, we model the magnetic susceptibility data from literature. A dimer containing two nearest-neighbor iron ions in the spiral chain is considered to partly account for quasi-one-dimensional properties of iron borates, and then the mean-field approximation is used. The results of calculations with the exchange parameters for Fe3+ ions J(nn)=-6.25 K (intrachain interactions) and J(nnn)=-1.92 K (interchain interactions) obtained from fitting agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: We report the first measurements of the optical spectra of NdFe3(BO3)(4), a promising material for optoelectronics. Exchange splitting of Nd3+ spectral lines due to magnetic interactions in a magnetically ordered state was observed. The temperature dependences of the exchange splitting and of the linewidth point to the temperature T-c 33 +/- 1K of the magnetic ordering in both iron and neodymium. magnetic subsystems. 2004 Elsevier B.V. Аннотация: Cascade of phase transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) at 156, 37, and 9 K has been detected by specific heat measurements and further studied by Raman scattering and Nd3+ spectroscopic probe method. A weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K is followed by a second-order antiferromagnetic ordering phase transition at 37 K and a first-order spin-reorientational phase transition at 9 K. Аннотация: High-resolution polarized transmission spectra of DyFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals were investigated in broad spectral (10-23000 cm(-1)) and temperature (3.5-300 K) ranges. Energies of the dysprosium levels in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases were determined. On the basis of these data and preliminary calculations in the frameworks of the exchange-charge model, we determined the crystal-field and Dy-Fe exchange interaction parameters of the Dy3+ ions at sites with the point C-2 symmetry corresponding to the enantiomorphic P3(1)21 and P3(2)21 space groups. The values of electronic quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions were calculated, which enabled us to interpret results of the work [Usui et al., Nature Mater. 13, 611 (2014)] on the observation of domains of different quadrupole chirality in DyFe3(BO3)(4).
