Аннотация: The domain structure of a diluted weak alpha -Fe2O3 : Ga ferromagnet is considered. Magnetic fields of specific amplitudes and orientations applied in the basal plane of the crystal are found to produce nonuniform magnetic states due to a periodic deviation of the antiferromagnetic vector from the easy axis of crystallographic anisotropy. A phase diagram of the modulated magnetic state with the triad axis is constructed, and a dependence of the spatial period of modulation on an external magnetic field is studied. A phenomenological model and the nature of the magnetic superstructure discovered are discussed. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The domain structure of a FeBO3 : Mg single crystal was studied with a polarizing microscope. It was found that application of a magnetic field along the hard axis in the basal plane of this weak ferromagnet gives rise, within a certain field-strength interval, to a magnetic superstructure observed against the background of the macrodomain structure of the sample. The magnetic superstructure is visually represented as a quasi-periodic system of bands oriented perpendicular to the applied field, with an alternating magneto-optic image contrast along an axis coinciding with the magnetic-field direction. The absence of sharp changes in the contrast of the magnetic superstructure image along this axis is explained as being due to the smooth variation of the sublattice magnetic-moment azimuth with spatial coordinates. The results obtained are discussed within the parameters of the instability of a uniform magnetic state of a system in the random field induced by a magnetic field. Аннотация: The temperature behavior is studied of the ellipticity psi and Faraday rotation angle phi when the gauging beam lambda = 0.525-mu-m propagates nearly in the third-order symmetry axis direction and magnetic field is applied in the basal plane of a sample. The two types of the curves are measured: (1) psi*(T) and phi*(T) when the sample under cooling is illuminated by the lambda 0.75-mu-m source; (2) psi(T) and phi(T) free of an additional illumination. The difference between two types of the curves DELTA-psi = psi*-psi and DELTA-phi = phi*-phi demonstrates a critical behavior, what leads to conclusion that the structural and, simultaneously, orientational magnetic phase transitions take place. The transition temperature is found to depend on the magnetic field orientation and illumination intensity. The latter is approximated satisfactory by the dependence T = 158 exp(-0.05/I1/3), where I is the illumination intensity, 158 and 0.05 are the fitting parameters. The interpretation of the results is based on the phenomenological theory of phase transitions with involving the two-component order parameter and photoinduced coupling center model with the long-range interaction potential which has an exponential spatial decay.
