Terahertz spectroscopy -- Multiferroics -- Europium iron borate
Аннотация: The terahertz spectra of a rare-earth iron borate with the huntite structure are obtained for the first time. We study the low-temperature (4.0–90 K) α-polarized transmittance spectra of the EuFe3(BO3)4 single crystal in the region 0.9–6.0 THz. Pronounced shifts of phonon frequencies and appearance of new phonon modes at the temperature T S = 58 K of the R 32 → P 3 1 21 structural phase transition are observed. Additional shifts of phonon frequencies occur at the temperature T N = 34 K of the magnetic ordering of the Fe subsystem, thus evidencing the spin–phonon coupling in this multiferroic material.

Rare-earth iron borates -- Spin phonon interactions -- Electron phonon coupling -- Optical spectroscopy
Аннотация: High-resolution far-infrared reflection and polarized ellipsometry, as well as Raman scattering temperature-dependent measurements are used to study spin-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in rare-earth (RE) iron borates with the R32 structure of a natural mineral huntite, namely, in RFe3(BO3)4 with R=Pr, Nd, and Sm. Pronounced peculiarities in the ω(T) dependences at the Néel temperature TN≈32 K are observed for all the compounds studied and the origin of these peculiarities is discussed. A coupling between lattice phonons and crystal-field excitations of a RE ion manifests itself by a renormalization of frequencies and intensities of coupled modes. Modeling of the spectra has revealed the value of about 15 cm−1 for the electron–phonon coupling constant in PrFe3(BO3)4.

Cascade of phase transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) at 156, 37, and 9 K has been detected by specific heat measurements and further studied by Raman scattering and Nd3+ spectroscopic probe method. A weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K is followed by a second-order antiferromagnetic ordering phase transition at 37 K and a first-order spin-reorientational phase transition at 9 K. Аннотация: Inelastic light scattering spectra of several members of the RFe3(BO3)(4) family reveal a cascade of phase transitions as a function of temperature, starting with a structural, weakly first-order, phase transition followed by two magnetic phase transitions. Those consist of the ordering of the Fe-spin sublattice, revealed by all the compounds, and a subsequent spin-reorientational transition for GdFe3(BO3)(4). The Raman data evidence a strong coupling between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in these borates. The Fe-sublattice ordering leads to a strong suppression of the low-energy magnetic scattering, and a multiple peaked two-magnon scattering continuum is observed. Evidence for short-range correlations is found in the "paramagnetic" phase by the observation of a broad magnetic continuum in the Raman data, which persists up to surprisingly high temperatures.
