    Specific features of the spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a resonance defective nanocomposite layer / S. Y. Vetrov, M. V. Pyatnov, I. V. Timofeev // Phys. sol. st. - 2013. - Vol. 55, Is. 8. - P. 1697–1702DOI 10.1134/S1063783413080258. - Cited References: 27
Аннотация: This paper reports on studying the spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a defective layer of a nanocomposite consisting of metallic nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and characterized by an effective resonance dielectric permittivity. The transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra of waves of both circular polarizations have been calculated, and the spectral splitting of the defective mode when its frequency coincides with the resonance frequency of the nanocomposite has been studied. An essential dependence of the splitting on the nanoball concentration in the defect has been established. It has been shown that, depending on the position of the resonance frequency with respect to the boundaries of the cho blesteric band gap, an additional passband appears in the transmission spectrum, which corresponds to waves of the diffracting circular polarization, or an additional band gap for waves of both circular polarizations, which are substantially modified with variations of both the incidence angle of light and the cholesteric helix pitch.

OPTICAL TAMM STATES
Аннотация: The light transmission spectrum has been calculated for a "cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal" structure. It is shown that the system can have an isolated waveguide surface mode with characteristics efficiently controllable by external fields acting on the cholesteric. The degree of localization of surface modes and the transmission coefficients have been found to differ considerably for the light of different polarizations. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We have studied spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a combined defect consisting of a nanocomposite layer and a twist. The nanocomposite layer is made of metallic nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and featuring effective resonant permittivity. A solution has been found for the transmission spectrum of circularly polarized waves in the structure. We have analyzed spectral splitting of the defect mode in the band gap of the cholesteric when its frequency coincides with the nanocomposite resonant frequency. Defect modes have characteristics strongly dependent on the magnitude and the sign of the phase difference of the cholesteric helix on both sides of the defect layer. It has been found that the band gap width and the position and localization degree of defect modes can be effectively controlled by external fields applied to the cholesteric.

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum has been calculated for a 'cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal' structure. It is shown that the system can have an isolated waveguide surface mode with characteristics efficiently controllable by external fields acting on the cholesteric. This mode is similar to optical Tamm state. We observed anisotropy of transmission of the structure under consideration in the propagation of light of a certain polarization in forward and backward directions. This property is inherent in optically chiral media, such as the cholesteric liquid crystal.

Аннотация: We investigate the localized surface modes in a structure consisting of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer, a phase plate, and a metal layer. These modes are analogous to the optical Tamm states. The nonreciprocal transmission of polarized light propagating in the forward and backward directions is established. It is demonstrated that the transmission spectrum can be controlled by external fields acting on the cholesteric liquid crystal and by varying the plane of polarization of the incident light.

Аннотация: The spectrum of light transmission through a structure consisting of a metallic layer and a cholesteric liquid crystal with an induced planar defect is calculated. The possibility of existence of localized states at the metal-dielectric interface of this system is demonstrated. Аннотация: The possibility of the existence of localized optical modes with maximum field intensity at the interface between the metal and cholesteric liquid crystal is theoretically grounded. The system comprises a defect-containing cholesteric liquid crystal and a metal layer. It is established that the localization occurs at almost any defect thickness rather than only at the half-wave thickness, at which the loss of the polarization dependence of diffraction reflection and the absence of field localization are observed for the structure without the metallic layer. It is demonstrated that the spectral properties can be controlled by external fields affecting the liquid crystal. At large thicknesses of the cholesteric liquid crystal between the defect and the metallic layer, the spectrum contains the pronounced peaks corresponding to the edge modes. The results obtained open new opportunities for controlling the transmittance spectrum, polarization, and localization of light in optoelectronic elements based on the investigated system. © 2017 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: Coupling between the defect mode of a cholesteric liquid crystal and the localized mode of a cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal structure is theoretically demonstrated. It is shown that the transmittance spectrum can be tuned by changing the twist-defect angle and helix pitch, which are governed by external factors. The spectra for different circular polarizations of the incident light are different; specifically, at the nondiffracting polarization, there is no defect-mode transmittance peak.

Аннотация: The modes formed by two coupled chiral optical Tamm states localized at the interfaces between a photonic cholesteric liquid crystal conjugated with polarization-preserving anisotropic mirrors have been analytically and numerically investigated. These modes are only excited at the diffracting polarization of incident light. As the cholesteric layer thickness decreases, the spectral splitting of the localized state frequency is predicted. The splitting value depends on the crystal layer thickness. At the nondiffracting circular polarization, the localized modes are not excited, and the system becomes similar to the Fabry-Perot cavity containing an anisotropic helical structure.
