Аннотация: A new type of nanoparticle-containing glasses based on borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and larger radius elements, Dy, Tb, Gd, Ho, Er, Y, and Bi, is studied. Heat treatment of these glasses results in formation of magnetic nanoparticles, radically changing their physical properties. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation-based techniques: x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, x-ray absorption near-edge structure, and small-angle x-ray scattering, show a broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes with characteristics depending on the treatment regime; a crystalline structure of these nanoparticles is detected in heat treated samples. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of samples subjected to heat treatment as well as of maghemite, magnetite, and iron garnet allow to unambiguously assign the nanoparticle structure to maghemite, independently of co-dopant nature and of heat treatment regime used. Different features observed in the MCD spectra are related to different electron transitions in Fe3+ ions gathered in the nanoparticles. The static magnetization in heat treated samples has non-linear dependence on the magnetizing field with hysteresis. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves show that at higher temperatures the nanoparticles occur in superparamagnetic state with blocking temperatures above 100 K. Below ca. 20 K, a considerable contribution to both zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations occurs from diluted paramagnetic ions. Variable-temperature electron magnetic resonance (EMR) studies unambiguously show that in as-prepared glasses paramagnetic ions are in diluted state and confirm the formation of magnetic nanoparticles already at earlier stages of heat treatment. Computer simulations of the EMR spectra corroborate the broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes found by "direct" techniques as well as superparamagnetic nanoparticle behaviour demonstrated in the magnetization studies. Аннотация: The Eu3+-doped red-orange emitting phosphor of tellurite glass 0.25Li2O–0.20Y2O3–0.5TeO2–0.05Eu2O3 has been synthesized by the melt quenching method. The amorphous nature of the glass has been verified by XRD measurements. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra, the luminescence decay curves have been investigated for the composition. The phosphor can be efficiently excited by the near UV light to realize the intense narrow red emission line (611 nm) corresponding to forced electric dipole transition 5D0 → 7F2 of Eu3+ ions. The Li2O–Y2O3–TeO2:Eu3+glass phosphor is a potential red-orange emitting candidate for the application in WLEDs.

Аннотация: The main problems of the current state-of-the-art research into the caloric effects observed in oxygen ferroics, multiferroics, and composites, as well as the influence of different factors (anisotropy, dimensional parameters, direct and indirect interferroic interactions) on these effects, have been considered. Possible ways to increase the caloric efficiency of materials have been analyzed.

Magnetic nanoparticles -- ε-Fe2O3 -- Magnetic circular dichroism -- Electron magnetic resonance
Аннотация: A new type of magnetic nanoparticles was revealed in borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and gadolinium. Structure and magnetic properties of the particles differ essentially from that of the α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, or Fe3O4 nanoparticles which were detected earlier in similar glass matrices. Transmission electron microscopy including STEM-HAADF and EDX, synchrotron radiation-based XRD, static magnetic measurements, magnetic circular dichroism, and electron magnetic resonance studies allow referring the nanoparticles to the iron oxide phase-ε-Fe2O3. Analysis of the data set has shown that it is Gd atoms that govern the process of nanoparticles' nucleation and its incorporation into the particles in different proportions can be used to adjust their magnetic and magneto-optical characteristics. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: The temperature dependence of the heat capacity of two compositions in the solid solution system BaTi1 - xZrxO3 (x = 0.25, 0.35) was measured using adiabatic calorimetry. In the T-x phase diagram, these compounds occupy positions near the crossover from conventional ferroelectric behavior to the relaxor state. Both compounds reveal diffuse heat capacity anomalies: two anomalies in the temperature ranges 250-350 and 150-200 K at x = 0.35 and one anomaly within the range similar to 150-320 K at x = 0.25. The results obtained are discussed together with structural and dielectric measurements. (c) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The heat capacity of two relaxors BaTi(1-x)ZrxO(3) (x = 0.35, 0.40) was measured using adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range 100-360 K. The Cp(T) dependence of both compositions is characterized by the presence of two diffuse anomalies near the Burns temperature T-d and the temperature of the maximum in permittivity T-m in the temperature ranges 250-350 K and 120 200 K. The anomalous heat capacity near T-d was analysed taking into account the distribution of Zr concentration in nanoregions leading to the distribution of their transition temperatures into the polar phase. Excess heat capacity near Tm was discussed in the framework of the spherical random bond-random field model. The results are compared with the data obtained by the same procedures for PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 studied experimentally earlier.

Аннотация: The spectra of lattice vibration frequencies of solid solutions Ba1 - x Bi(2x/3)a-- Ti-x/3(Zr)O-3 and Ba1 - x La (x) Ti(Zr)(1 - x/4)a-- O-x/4(3) are calculated in terms of a generalized Gordon-Kim model with inclusion of the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities. Over the entire concentration range, the calculated phonon spectra contain a ferroelectric soft mode. The effect of various interactions on the ferroelectric instability of these solid solutions is studied. It is shown that the character of ferroelectric instability is largely determined by the mechanism of charge compensation.
