Аннотация: A new type of nanoparticle-containing glasses based on borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and larger radius elements, Dy, Tb, Gd, Ho, Er, Y, and Bi, is studied. Heat treatment of these glasses results in formation of magnetic nanoparticles, radically changing their physical properties. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation-based techniques: x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, x-ray absorption near-edge structure, and small-angle x-ray scattering, show a broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes with characteristics depending on the treatment regime; a crystalline structure of these nanoparticles is detected in heat treated samples. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of samples subjected to heat treatment as well as of maghemite, magnetite, and iron garnet allow to unambiguously assign the nanoparticle structure to maghemite, independently of co-dopant nature and of heat treatment regime used. Different features observed in the MCD spectra are related to different electron transitions in Fe3+ ions gathered in the nanoparticles. The static magnetization in heat treated samples has non-linear dependence on the magnetizing field with hysteresis. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves show that at higher temperatures the nanoparticles occur in superparamagnetic state with blocking temperatures above 100 K. Below ca. 20 K, a considerable contribution to both zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations occurs from diluted paramagnetic ions. Variable-temperature electron magnetic resonance (EMR) studies unambiguously show that in as-prepared glasses paramagnetic ions are in diluted state and confirm the formation of magnetic nanoparticles already at earlier stages of heat treatment. Computer simulations of the EMR spectra corroborate the broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes found by "direct" techniques as well as superparamagnetic nanoparticle behaviour demonstrated in the magnetization studies. Аннотация: In the first part of this paper we outline the state of the art in the field of magnetic nanoparticles in oxide glasses. We describe the theoretical background of two complementary techniques used for the studies of the state of paramagnetic ions, clusters and magnetic particles in a diamagnetic matrix, viz., magnetooptical Faraday rotation (FR) and electron magnetic resonance (EMIR) and we overview previous results obtained with these techniques for several glass systems. In the second part, we highlight the case of potassium-alumina-borate glasses - a glassy system where doping with paramagnetic oxides results in formation of magnetic particles at very low contents of paramagnetic additions: Fe(2)O(3) and MnO. In the special case when the ratio of the iron and manganese oxides in the charge is 3/2, magnetic nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of manganese ferrite are formed already at the first stage of the glass preparation. After thermal treatment all glasses show FR and EMR spectra attesting to the presence of superparamagnetic nanoparticles, characterized by relatively broad size and shape distributions. The formation of magnetic nanoparticles confers to these glasses magnetic and magnetooptical properties typical of magnetically ordered substances. At the same time, the glasses remain transparent in a part of the visible and near infrared spectral range and display a high FR value. Аннотация: A model of amorphous ferromagnets with longwave spatial fluctuations of the magnetization modulus M is studied. It is shown that for a correct understanding of the properties of the model, it is principally necessary to take into account the magnetic dipole interaction. This interaction enhances the contribution of the fluctuations of M to the ground state, dispersion law and spin wave attenuation. The spectral and correlation properties of the inhomogeneous ground state and the law of approach of the magnetization to saturation in the model are studied. The dispersion law and spin wave attenuation are investigated. A novel mechanism of formation of a correction of the form T5/2 to the Bloch law in the low temperature dependence of the magnetization is proposed.

Аннотация: Intense search for new nonlinear optical crystals for the mid-infrared region is in progress, and Li-containing quaternary chalcogenides are expected to improve transparency range, stability, phase-matching conditions, and other parameters in comparison with commercially available AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2. Single crystals of Li2In2GeSe6 up to 8 mm in size were obtained by the Bridgman- Stockbarger growth technique, and their high quality was confirmed by exciton luminescence. A monoclinic structure and direct band-to-band electronic transitions were established, and the thermal expansion was shown to be virtually isotropic. Defect-related absorption and luminescence were revealed, and the way to lower them was suggested. The electronic structure, density of states, and some optical properties were calculated from the first principles for Li2In2GeSe6. The calculated nonlinear coefficients and rather large birefringence indicate a strong phase-matching ability. These investigations demonstrate that Li2In2GeSe6 is a promising mid-infrared nonlinear optical crystal.

Аннотация: Исследовано сцепление нематического жидкого кристалла 5ЦБ и 5ЦБ, допированного ионным сурфактантом ЦТАБ, в ячейках с плоскопараллельными ограничивающими поверхностями. Получены зависимости интенсивности проходящего лазерного излучения от величины магнитного поля для ячеек с различными толщинами слоя нематика при различных температурах. Из пороговых полей перехода Фредерикса определены значения полярной энергии сцепления жидкого кристалла с поверхностью. Изучено влияние ионного сурфактанта на энергию сцепления, установлено, что добавление в объем жидкого кристалла ионного сурфактанта ведет к ее ослаблению. Проведен анализ точности определения энергии сцепления на основе выражения, следующего из соотношения Рапини – Популара. Показано, что лучшее экспериментальное разрешение энергии сцепления достигается при использовании тонких слоев нематика, более сильных магнитных полей, а также слабого сцепления молекул жидкого кристалла с поверхностью.
The coupling of nematic liquid crystal 5CB and 5CB doped with ionic surfactant CTAB in the cells with plane parallel interfaces was studied. For the cells with the varied nematic layer thickness at different temperatures, the dependencies of the passed laser radiation intensity on the magnetic field were obtained. From the threshold fields of Freedericksz transition, the polar anchoring energy of the liquid crystal to the surface was determined. The effect of the ionic surfactant on the anchoring energy was studied and it was found that the addition of the ionic surfactant to liquid crystal weakens the anchoring energy. The analysis of the accuracy of the anchoring energy determination based on the expression following from the Rapini - Popular relation was carried out. It was shown that the best experimental resolution of the anchoring energy is achieved when the thin nematic layers, stronger magnetic fields and weak anchoring of the liquid crystal molecules with the surface are used.

Аннотация: The structure formation observed in the surface layer of polycarbonate which proceeds when nematic liquid crystal is deposited on a film is studied. Films prepared from polycarbonate solutions in dichloromethane, chloroform, or pyridine and dried in thermobalance at different temperatures and different drying times are studied. Textures are prepared in the process of domain growth. The effect of the orientation of the disclination lines in a magnetic field and the memory effect of molecular ordering after removal and redeposition of the liquid crystal layer are observed. The process of structure formation is analyzed on the basis of the model of cooperative interaction of liquid crystal molecules with polymer chains taking into account the adsorption mechanism.

Аннотация: Simple cubic 'open' perovskite ScF3 stands out among trifluoride materials in its large, isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE), but also its proximity of its zero-temperature state to a structural phase transition. Here we report a temperature- and frequency-dependent lattice dynamical study of Brillouin zone center lattice excitations of single crystals of ScF3 using infrared reflectivity measurements. In addition to quantifying the mode strengths and energies in single crystals of this interesting material, we also find strong evidence for multiphonon absorption processes which excite the zone-edge incipient soft modes associated with NTE and the structural quantum phase transition. In this way, we identify an optically-allowed pathway to excite soft modes provides a means to athermally populate modes associated with NTE in ScF3.

Аннотация: The surface anchoring of a nematic doped with the ionic surfactant has been investigated and compared with the one in the undoped sample. The director tilt angle at the substrates coated with the orienting polymer film has been determined by the null method in a rotating magnetic field. The Frederiks transition in a magnetic field has been chosen as a convenient technique to measure the polar anchoring energy Wθ. The temperature dependences of anchoring energy have been obtained for the various nematic cells. The Wθ values for nematic doped with the ionic surfactant are less than for the undoped one. The factors affecting the measurement accuracy have been discussed. The accuracy is higher for the thinner nematic layers and weaker anchoring energy.
