Аннотация: A one-dimensional ZrO2/SiO2 photonic crystal with a 4-n -pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) nematic defect layer was used to investigate the transmission spectra of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the liquid-crystal director at different angles of incidence. The spectra of the photonic crystal were shown to split into four polarized components T-ij at oblique incidence. When the incident angle increased, the bandgap edges and the defect modes shifted towards short wavelengths, while the amplitudes of the defect modes increased for the transverse magnetic polarization and decreased for the transverse electric polarization. The observed discrepancy between the defect mode amplitudes in the center and near the edges of the photonic bandgap was found to be related to the radiation losses inside the defect layer of a non-ideal photonic crystal. The simulated transmission spectra obtained using recurrence relations and taking into account the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Аннотация: A chiral nematic is embedded between multilayer mirrors to obtain voltage-inducible polarized resonance spectra. Initially, the nematic director is uniformly oriented perpendicular to the mirrors’ surfaces because the chiral nematic helix is completely untwisted due to the homeotropic boundary conditions specified by the adsorbed cations. Then, a voltage is applied to remove the layer of surface-active cations from the input mirror. The obtained twisted homeoplanar configuration has a helix pitch exceeding the layer’s thickness. The twisting leads to the anomalous blue shift of the o-modes in the transmittance spectrum of the photonic structure. This blue shift can be effectively compensated by repulsion of spectral peaks as a result of mode coupling in the vicinity of the virtual avoided crossing point. The experimental results obtained are confirmed numerically using the 4 ˣ 4 transfer matrix method and explained with the contribution of a geometric phase.

Аннотация: It is shown that in the chloroplast periodic structure with a defect, the resonant absorption of light can be implemented. It is found that the resonant light absorption depends significantly on the position of a defect. In terms of the absorption of light energy, an asymmetric resonator is more efficient than a symmetric one.

Аннотация: It is demonstrated experimentally that amplitudes of defect modes of one-dimensional photonic crystal have maximal value near edges of the photonic band gap while at the centre of the stop-band they are reduced, moreover than more number of layers in photonic crystal, the less the amplitude of defect mode at the center of the PBG. We explain such behavior of defect modes presence of losses at propagation of light in real photonic crystal structures. © 2008 IEEE.

Аннотация: Alignment of nematic liquid crystals on polycarbonate films obtained with the use of solvents with different solvations is studied. Domain structures occurring during the growth on the polymer surface against the background of the initial thread-like or schlieren texture are demonstrated. It is established by optical methods that the domains are stable formations visualizing the polymer surface structures. In nematic droplets, the temperature-induced transition from the domain structure with two extinction bands to the structure with four bands is observed. This transition is shown to be caused by reorientation of the nematic director in the liquid crystal volume from the planar alignment to the homeotropic state with the pronounced radial configuration of nematic molecules on the surface. The observed textures are compared with different combinations of the volume LC orientations and the radial distribution of the director field and the disclination lines at the polycarbonate surface.

Аннотация: The polarized components of transmission spectrum of a multilayered photonic structure containing a nematic liquid crystal under the magnetic-field-induced torsion deformation have been investigated. Since the planarly twisted director structure of the nematic is unrelated to a decrease in its optical anisotropy, the control of the polarization and spectral characteristics of the eigenmodes is based on the occurrence of a geometric phase, whose contribution gradually increases upon nematic deformation. Along with the previously observed blue shift of the cavity o modes, the anomalous shift of the cavity e modes to the long-wavelength region (red shift) of the transmission spectrum has been detected. It has been shown that the countershift of the modes narrows the intermode interval. Remarkably, the extremal approaching of e and o modes in magnetic field Hex occurs below the avoided crossing phenomenon observed in the stronger equalization field Heq (Hex ‹ Heq). The experimental results have been interpreted by the numerical simulation of the transmission spectra of the chiral photonic structure using the transfer matrix method.

Аннотация: Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Аннотация: The polarized optical states in the transmission spectrum of a twisted-nematic Fabry-Perot cavity with the distinctly broken Mauguin's waveguide regime have been theoretically and experimentally investigated. Specific features of the electric field-induced transformation of the polarization and spectral characteristics of eigenmodes of the neighboring series at the overlap resonant frequencies have been examined. It is demonstrated that the linear polarizations of eigenmodes at the cavity boundaries remain nearly orthogonal and their frequency trajectories reproduce the avoided crossing phenomenon. The experimental data are confirmed analytically and by the numerical simulation of light transmission through the investigated anisotropic multilayer with the use of a Berreman matrix method. The results obtained can be generalized to any materials with the helix response.

The switch consisting of one-dimensional photonic crystal with a nematic liquid crystal defect layer was placed between two crossed polarizers. Аннотация: The transmission spectra of polarized light waves in a photonic crystal/liquid crystal (PC/LC) cell placed between crossed polarizers and controlled by an electric or magnetic field have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Electro- and magneto-optical switching based on the interference of polarized defect modes has been demonstrated. The transmission spectra of the PC/LC cell have been calculated as a function of the voltage applied to the LC layer and the magnetic field strength. The results of the calculations agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: Mode hybridization is a unique way to manipulate the mode inside a fixed cavity or at interface. For example, Tamm plasmon-polariton at solid interface can be spectrally shifted without tuning the interface. Experimental implementation of tunable hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes is reported. The hybrid modes are excited in a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded with a gold layer by attaching a nematic liquid crystal microcavity. Coupling between Tamm plasmon-polariton and microcavity modes leads to repulsion of their dispersion curves controlled by the refractive index of a liquid crystal and the polarization of incident light. Effective tuning of hybrid modes through heating or applying an external electric field to the liquid crystal layer is demonstrated. The experimentally measured strength coupling value between Tamm and microcavity modes was 20.7 meV.

Аннотация: Polarized light-absorption spectra are obtained for single-domain planar-oriented samples of the discotic D-ho. Previously predicted spectral effects induced by resonant dipole-dipole interactions of the molecules are observed. New methods for determining the parameters of the local field in the D-ho phase are developed which take into account the mixing of the molecular excitations. It is shown that the two-dimensional crystalline ordering of the molecular columns decreases the anisotropy of the local field for this phase. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. Аннотация: Anomalous spectral shift of transmission peaks is observed in a Fabry-Pérot cavity filled with a chiral anisotropic medium. The effective refractive index value resides out of the interval between the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices. The spectral shift is explained by contribution of a geometric phase. The problem is solved analytically using the approximate Jones matrix method, numerically using the accurate Berreman method, and geometrically using the generalized Mauguin-Poincaré rolling cone method. The o-mode blueshift is measured for a 4-methoxybenzylidene-4′-n-butylaniline twisted-nematic layer inside the Fabry-Pérot cavity. The twist is electrically induced due to the homeoplanar-twisted configuration transition in an ionic-surfactant-doped liquid crystal layer. Experimental evidence confirms the validity of the theoretical model. © 2015 American Physical Society.
